To be delighted PIP assessments are to be face to face?

The only good thing about the budget is that Rachel Reeves announced that face to face assessments for PIP and disability benefits are being brought back. AIBU to think that this is a great thing?

It will make sure that the money goes to those who need it. It is madness that such face to face assessments were ever stopped.

@Bumblebee72
Shes then talking shit because the assessments were remote during Covid as everything was and she’d know that given that she blames Covid for many things (not incorrectly).
Shes trying to appease benefits badgers I suppose.
Literally nothing about face to face assessments is new.
She should have figures on costs for the assessments already so I presume she factored that into her guff (of course not!). I think she’s a twat and this is the worst Labour government ever. But that’s another days work I suppose

Clarabell77 · 26/11/2025 18:54

How on earth could you be “delighted” about that? What impact will it have on you?

WendyErica · 26/11/2025 18:54

In principle but I'm housebound effectively so will they be dragging people out? It's already taken 7-plus months.

No he submitted no paperwork other than the form, he provided his Dr’s details but they have never been contacted by DWP ( we asked).

Like i said sure

So once again she either doesn’t know what she is talking about or is wiping people up against disabled and chronically ill people.

Neither is good look.
Thats scapegoating the most vulnerable in society to distract from her increase in taxes on ordinary people.
And remind me? They’re supposed to be Labour? WTF

I don't many of us are arguing that she isn't incompetent. I doubt knows what's shes talking about otherwise she woundn't have increased the cost employee people at the same time as betting on growth.

@Shakeyourwammyfannyfunkysong
Theres no support from the NHS that realistically can help shift that pressure- if young people as young as 16 are eligible for PIP the massive shake up needs to be school level and beyond- social clubs and grassroots organisations that can accommodate ASD/ADHD, mental health resources on the NHS.
My DH is a counsellor/therapist who works a lot with both looked after children and children in the community and adults.
He works privately and keeps his fees down but some parents don’t understand the source problems- they think divorce or abuse or ASD isn’t really a problem.
Those children grow up to be adults with severe problems that MiGHT be assisted with therapy and community activities but the problem most likely lies closer to home and there’s no fraud checking that will get those people easily out of a lifelong hole.
If there were to be budget improvements to shape a change in prevention for MH related issues it needs to be pumped into the NHS (like Brexit promised but failed).

Absolute rubbish! My ds claims pip for a medical condition and they have never accessed his medical records or contacted his doctor! He has never provided any evidence other than the form to apply! Benefit fraud is not minuscule, its a massive problem with only tiny amounts of it being detected. I literally know lots of people who commit benefit fraud and have done for years!

Lucky for your DS, meanwhile I know someone who literally had to crawl in front of their assessor because they were too poorly to walk and was recorded on their assessment that they had no mobility problems and were well and able to move around on their own without support. Benefit fraud is only approximately 3.3% of all benefits claimed. Not really the figures they claim them to be. Keep in mind they also include in that figure people who have accidentally over claimed as they've earned maye 5/10£ over the limit or unaware they've continued to be paid where they shouldn't have and then are forced to pay back even when the fault is on the government.
When compared to tax evasion or tax avoidance schemes it is far less of an issue however it is demonised far more.

GETTINGLIKEMYMOTHER · 26/11/2025 18:33

And yet there are always posters rushing to tell us that benefit fraud is a very minor problem, hardly worth worrying about….

I know. I’ve been accused several times on this thread of being a troll, of deliberately stirring up antipathy towards those on PIPs.

It may be an extreme example, but I’ve only reported what I know to be true. It’s almost as though some posters live sheltered lives, and don’t personally know or associate with any deprived or dysfunctional people. Benefit fiddlers are everyone - or at least they are where I live, which is an area with high levels of poverty and deprivation.

When have they never been face to face? Confused

I know they were done by phone for a while due to covid, but they've never actually stopped assessments for people have they?

Why are you so pleased that many people who have long-standing chronic illnesses and disabilities, will have to continue to go through these humiliating, and stressful assessments, that make people so anxious, that they have to have counselling for it.

What a horrible, gloating, mean-spirited thread. Hmm

I agree, this is an awful thread.

Those who are gleeful at this could become chronically ill and or disabled themselves any time, there but for the grace of god etc.
I suppose they will feel differently if it happens to them or their loved ones.

It was in her speech. Disability Assessments are bring brought back to being in person. She had a jab at the shadow chancellor for making them remote in the first place.

My dd claims PIP and filling in the forms was a nightmare, I was hoping they would ask for a face to face as then they could see that she is severely disabled. Dd is almost non verbal, severely autistic (constant stimming, flapping etc….. and learning difficulties), I was worried without a face to face I would be accused of lying. Luckily her claim was processed purely on evidence, she has a EHCP and a lot of medical reports, diagnosis and therapy.

I do think face to face is much better, though I know some will complain because they feel they are unable to cope with face to face. My daughter would have struggled with a face to face appointment but at least that would show and prove how she can’t cope well with many situations.

Despite what some people think, PIP is hard to get, unless you have a load of evidence backing up everything you write on those forms, many get turned down including those with life limiting conditions. There’s only a tiny % of people that are screwing over the system and if face to face reduces that further then it’s a good thing.

The problem is that not all disabilities are visible.

Much better to protect those who will end up with a worsening of their health just because they’ve been asked to come for a face to face assessment that will show nothing.

Ot was t suggested by Reeves. Today or at any point.
It already exists for PIP claimants.

You can ask for them to be recorded. I went from nothing to high rate for both on mandatory reconsideration all the information was the same the only difference was mandatory reconsideration was recorded

My current claim is due for reassessment next August, I shall ask for it to be recorded @youalright, thank you for letting me know this was an option. (I may still record it myself anyway) They should always be recorded, for accuracy and accountability on both sides.

(so much public money is wasted reassessing people like me with chronic incurable conditions, I’m not going to get better, ever, why do they put me through this every three years? It’s inhumane and pointless)

MaurineWayBack · 26/11/2025 18:39

PropertyD · 26/11/2025 18:15

Then why are the claims going through the roof?

Unfortunately, because people health has overall deteriorated since the start if Covid.

If it was just because it’s so easy, numbers woukd have gone through the roof a very long time ago. Thetes been no change on the way assessments are done fur quite q
a while now. So it’s not easier. If it’s not easier, it’s that there are simply more people who are ill - maybe because they’re not treated on the NHS in a timely manner. Maybe because of LC. Maybe fur other reasons.
But it’s not because it’s easy or easier.

That’s a very sweeping statement!

I hope you don’t think social events will get my child talking or walking or eating. I mean, if socialisation could do that, she’d be ruling the world right now instead of sitting in a specialist OT chair watching baby cartoons at aged 8

But in all honesty your daughter doesn't represent the majority of PIP claimants. I'm not for one second suggesting that somebody with your daughter's conditions shouldn't get any support that they need. It is a very small proportion of the country though I'd say who are literally unable to do any kind of work... And no I don't mean people should be 'socialised' I mean they should receive more support to build their confidence and figure out what they really are capable of doing.

Themagicfarawaytreeismyfav · 26/11/2025 18:34

youalright · 26/11/2025 18:16

So you're son submitted no medical evidence, refused to give his drs details and they just took his word for it. Sure

No he submitted no paperwork other than the form, he provided his Dr’s details but they have never been contacted by DWP ( we asked).

GETTINGLIKEMYMOTHER · 26/11/2025 18:33

deepseaargyllfish · 26/11/2025 14:11

How often though? And when will it start? As I’ve mentioned on another thread, I know someone travelling around south-east Asia. Claiming PIP and disability allowance and UC. Has a flat paid for by the state which has her stuff in it but is otherwise unoccupied.

She feels confident to continue her holiday / travelling, because her claim isn't reassessed until 2027.

And yet there are always posters rushing to tell us that benefit fraud is a very minor problem, hardly worth worrying about….

They are already face to face @PAYE ….

Those who aren’t face to face is because it would actually be hurtful to people to come in. Like asking a bedbound person to come in. Or someone who self harms etc…..

This is very sensible of Reeves. So PIP pisstakers. The apologist would have an easier position to defend if the pisstakers were quite proud about their achievements and stopped telling people.

Overthemhills · 26/11/2025 18:27

@Ohthatsabitshit
Firstly, this is a made up story by the OP so don’t stress.
Secondly, if your DC is called for assessment I’m sure you can phone SWP and explain the situation.
Don’t let wankers stress you out

Shakeyourwammyfannyfunkysong · 26/11/2025 18:25

I work in healthcare. I am very much of the opinion that in most long term sickness we are over-medicalising it and downplaying the social elements. I don't know what the answer is exactly but I think any money would be better spent supporting these social barriers to work and not scrutinising the medical conditions that on the whole claimants might sometimes exaggarate but don't usually lie about

Well I'm doing something wrong then

My 25+ years of medical evidence apparently wasn't needed. (And appare tly made fuck all difference anyway)

honestly don't understand how any gets it that easily?! With no evidence?? And yet they can turn someone down with 25+ years of medical proof? 😞🫠
