Has Reeves hit a new low- saying it's misogyny?

I couldn't believe I was reading this today.

She accuses her critics of being against her budget plans because she is a woman. (But ignores the number of U turns she's done because of the criticism from back benchers)

Using the 'misogyny' card is really desperate IMO.

Of course i reported it, plus called it out. So no need for passive aggressive remark

No need for the personal attack. I was genuinely asking a question.

Have you missed the point?

She bigged up her previous roles and was in Customer Services which was in fact a pretty lowly role. She tried to make her CV more than it was - hence the nickname she got.

It wasn’t a cv though was it?

She was a BOE economist for 6 years, confirmed by the BoE and was thanked for her contribution in a BoE speech in 2001.

You re just making things up and reporting stuff that isn't true.

Sorry but I think you are wrong.
24 years ago she would have been straight out of uni.
Her degrees are in economics, but that doesn't mean she was working as an 'economist' as such at the B of E.
I have read elsewhere that her role was very much back of house, not front of house as an economist. Her subsequent roles were far lower than an 'economist' and she came under scrutiny for fraudulent expenses in one of those jobs.

That is a really serious accusation. Do you have evidence to back this up? Presumably you reported those racist slurs to MNHQ?

Eta: I am assuming you mean posters on this thread. If you don't mean posters on this thread, then apologies for getting the wrong end of the stick.

Edited

She didn't because it never happened.

Urgh I know it wasn’t in the Commons but no one accused Matt Hancock of doing the entire male sex a disservice when he cried over the Covid vaccines.

Yes good point, of course women in their 50s have absolutely no physiological reason to cry do they.....

& why is it even relevant?

PandoraSocks · 25/11/2025 09:09

twistyizzy · 25/11/2025 09:05

Ironically some commenting on misogyny against Reeves have no problem making rascist slurs against Kemi Badenoch.

Quite agree. She must be on the ropes now and trying to deflect. She is completely useless. Couldn’t even get the welfare bill down and crying does her no good. Looks weak and feeble. She was literally shaking and is clearly in the wrong role.

This briefing is likely to being on the ropes. The same as Starmer doing I will be leader article after the Streeting briefing mistake. Feeling under strain from potential ousting.

The threat to oust is coming from their own colleagues though. We don’t need to see all this.

ShesTheAlbatross · 25/11/2025 09:08

ChardonnaysBeastlyCat · 25/11/2025 08:42

I see it as fair.

The display of tears on the Commons was not exactly professional, it did not do any women in high position jobs a service.

She can't pick and choose.

People with half a brain and a quarter of a heart ought to be able to give proper context. How much of the population this includes, I am not prepared to say.

More likely, as usual, this kind of thing is used against a politician by people who are already against them. People who are neutral or supportive don’t tend to notice much. As in the workplace.

Why can't you see the context of the crying episode?

She's the Chancellor, in charge of the nation'd finances, she cries in the commons during a time welfare reforms are said to be needed to balance the books but are not acceptable to some backbenchers. She cries in front of the world's media. It sends a message about the state of the economy and the state of the government. There are consequences for the whole country.

It might have been personal, of course, but she should have recognised how awful the timing was.

Had she cried in different circumstances, at a funeral, or Remembrance Sunday then that's again different.

So yes, anyone with half a brain would recognise it.

Not so, the press have been reporting rumours in the budget for a few years now but historically that wasn't the case. I think RR is possibly the first one to try and get out ahead of these rumours, but I may be recalling incorrectly.

You are right. Sunak was criticised for doing the same thing. It isn't new.

People in important roles should have the intelligence not to lie on their CV/ Linkedin profiles as they will be found out.

I'm starting to think many posters here aren't aware of how that name for her developed.

SJone0101 · 25/11/2025 09:05

There is a huge amount of misogyny around her.

"Rachel from accounts" is hugely sexist, and would not be used for a man.

When the last disastrous budget took place, it was Liz Truss' fault, not the chancellor. And now this is about to happen it will be Rachel Reeve's fault, not the PM.

I hate what Rachel Reeves and the Labour Gov have done to my family as we are thousands of pounds down a month, but even I can see that how she is treated, is predominantly down to being a woman, despite thinking she is a terrible and incompetent person.

twistyizzy · 25/11/2025 09:05

YorkshireGoldDrinker · 25/11/2025 09:05

If in doubt, blame men. That is the way. I don't agree with it, but that's how it's done these days.

KilliMonjaro · 25/11/2025 08:13

Calling her Rachel from Accounts is highly misogynistic

Genuinely, why is that misogynistic?

It's an alternative framing of her work record after she was found to be telling porkies about her role.

How is it worse than free-gear Keir or similar rude nicknames?

Previous chancellors:
Flash Gordon
Dishy Rishi
Squiffy (Asquith)

And PMs
Sunny Jim
Grocer Heath

The clown prince (bozza)

Yes, historically there has been a bit of a gentleman's agreement in the media that you don't speculate about the budget. That has been slowly disappearing but does seem to have ramped up recently.

Personally I don't think the speculation helps anyone and does nothing to calm or reassure the public.

I'm a tax advisor. The last two months have been atrocious thanks to completely unfounded and unhelpful rumours. Regardless of what we see tomorrow I'll just be glad it's done.

Yes this. All these actuations of U turns etc, we know nothing yet. She's been criticised for things she hasn't done. That will stick even if the budget is a dream come true. No one's ever done that to a man.

PandoraSocks · 25/11/2025 09:03

I think she is not up to the job, but there is no doubt about the misogyny that has been aimed at her. Also Angela Rayner. Those photos of her on holiday were pulled to bits on MN.

Some posters on MN despise RR so much they will never be able to bring themselves to recognise she has experienced misogyny.

Christmaspuddingsss · 25/11/2025 09:03

She is the chancellor of the exchequer, nominally the most powerful financial leader in the country.

would you call a female CFO “Sarah from accounts” no. Xyz from accounts refers to the person who processes invoices, approves payments, does payroll. Low level transactional work. It is misogynistic and fascinating in that none of the totally inexperienced male chancellors have been called the same

The Rachel from Accounts thing only started when it was discovered that the narrative about her being a BofE economist was somewhat embellished. But I agree that it’s gone further than that now and that there is an element of misogyny to attitudes towards her. The problem is that she’s so publicly useless that it’s hard to defend her. At the same time most of the problems she has are from within her own party in terms of massively cutting down her options to deliver on the manifesto.

I really regret voting Labour now because I assumed Keir would keep the left wing under control like TB did but he hasn’t. It’s just reinforced my view that the Labour Party is unworkable in its current form as it’s too broad a church and nothing gets done.

Its not all RR’s fault but she’s the public face of it.

Yeah apart from she was a BOE economist, she joined their graduate program in 2000 and stayed their until 2006.
The CV thing was because she claimed a slightly longer period, she said in speeches it was the best part of a decade, which dependent on exact dates could have been 7 years...

The Rachel from Accounts was a right wing slur, designed to put her down.

Has she messed up, yes and i don't agree with much she has done either but this thread isn't about policy.

Of course there’s misogyny. I saw a really interesting interview with Jeremy Hunt this weekend who said that budgets are always this chaotic & the only difference is that hers has played out in public & it usually happens behind closed doors.
