I have left controlling partner of 10 years and moved into my own place. We need to sell the house so my money is still tied up. He has been controlling and emotionally abusive for years. He also has treated the dog badly and refuses to let me have her. He used a slip lead and will discipline her with this. He will pin her to the ground if she does something wrong and 2 weeks ago was trying to kick her as she had misbehaved. I can't stop worrying about the dog as he has no patience and worried he will take his anger out on her more now that I am gone. I am considering taking the dog next weekend when he isn't home but I know he will be fuming if I do this. AIBU? If I knew she was being treated well I wouldn't be considering it

This was an awful thread to read

Take someone with you if possible just in case- or at least let people know when you are going to the house.

i’m so glad you’re taking the dog (saving it). I don’t think it should matter who paid for the dog in circumstances like this. My ex paid for our dog and was the registered owner on the microchip but I was able to change it- I can’t remember the process but it wasn’t too difficult.

if your ex is volatile, please do speak to women’s aid and non emergency police for advice- and communicate with friends and family. Don’t live in fear unsupported.

Yes I've decided I'm going to get her and just hope he is out at the time I am expecting

Stay safe.
Do you have any ideas what time he may be out -at work for example? Can you arrive a little earlier and watch him leave from a distance?

Well done for this decision- but please be safe. Take someone with you, let people know where you are going, and don’t downplay any weird shit that might happen around your new place afterwards- report report report. Good luck!

What a bastard - I hear so many stories like this, men abusing both their partners and pets.
Take the dog. Don't tell anyone, just go take her.

GreenFrogYellow · 24/11/2025 20:10

I would go and get the dog no way could I leave her

Of course you should take the dog. Are you her registered owner, though?

No that's why I also didn't think I could take her but I have had advice from a vet that they can sort that for me and they would prefer me to take her as we are concerned for her welfare. This person has witnessed him doing this to the dog and had said they would testify that

We just taken in my DP’s dog that had been with his ex since they split, unfortunately she wouldn’t let him have the dog although she is incapable of looking after herself let alone a dog. His daughters brought the dog to us a few months ago due to worry about the dogs weight loss. The chip is in exes name however the police treat it as a civil matter as dogs are classed as property. We have had her at the door (told sternly to get off our property & never come back) and the police but the police left without any further action & confirmed it was a civil matter, the onus is on her to take us to court to prove ownership which she is not in a position to do. I’d take the dog & stand firm if police bother to come which is unlikely. We had support of a vet too who wrote a letter to the ex expressing concern & disappointment at the dogs health.

StruggleFlourish · 24/11/2025 17:59

If your name is on any veterinary bills, as owner, or if you are registered in some other way as owner in some way that legally he can't come back to you and claim that you stole the dog...

You might want to quickly call The humane society and ask them, just give them this very brief summary that you just said to us, and they can probably give you the best advice...

If they say that you have as much claim to the dog as he does that I would say take it. For God sakes. Don't leave her there. If you can. Of course that will not stop him from getting another dog and be abusive to it unfortunately. But if you can save this life, I would say do it. But, don't if legally he'll be able to come after you unfortunately.

You are so strong for leaving. You must have been so stressed and I'm sure even now as much as you feel relieved that you're still stressed. Hugs to you

WallaceinAnderland · 24/11/2025 17:48

You can't take the dog if you are the owner though.

A week ago, I'm hoping not to have to see him again

Has there been any harassment or attempts to get you back? Was there ever any violence? If the answer to any is yes, I wouldn't risk going to get the dog yet.

Ddakji · 24/11/2025 17:45

Do you have a friend or family member (male, if possible) who can accompany you to collect the dog?

And do you have evidence of his mistreatment of the dog!

TrippingOverMyAssets · 24/11/2025 17:45

Who is the owner?

CombatBarbie · 24/11/2025 17:43

Why didn't you take her when you moved out?

Id Just go and get her, provided its your name on the chips!

Have you reported your abuse? Id be inclined to request assistance to get the dog and report him for animal abuse.

Nycbucketlist · 24/11/2025 17:39

JLou08 · 24/11/2025 16:52

When did you leave? You need to be careful, abuse can escalate when you leave the relationship.

Yes go and get the dog

Catsolitude · 24/11/2025 17:07

Just take the dog. Who cares if he’s fuming? If you leave the dog, you know you’re worried about it being mistreated and it’s another way to exert control over you. You’re not going to get arrested for taking your own dog.

Cadenza12 · 24/11/2025 16:53

Just get the dog. I can't believe you need to ask.

Definitely take her

Starlight1984 · 24/11/2025 16:20

Go and get her.

Whereismyfleeceblanket · 24/11/2025 16:00

Let him try take you to court if he wishes. Keep details of how he treats her. Utter twat.

honeylulu · 24/11/2025 15:55

I would take the dog. He can fume all he likes. Though if her chip is registered to him he might be able to force a return. I suspect he's keeping the dog because it distresses you, rather than because he actually wants her.
