Pre Covid, I wouldn’t think twice about putting the heating on, now it seems like a luxury.

No sadly everything is more expensive

No

Maybe we'd need to scrap the net zero goals. We're only 1% of emissions anyway.

Exactly this!

ArseInTheCoOpWindow · 22/11/2025 21:00

I’ve never known it go down. It really started to go up a lot around 2009. But then went mad after Ukraine and Russia

Chatgpt tells me the main thing isn't policy costs. It's because the price is set/linked to the price of gas?

So getting rid of net zero wouldn't have any impact on our energy costs, because prices are influenced by factors other than net zero. Which is why I asked the question.

I can't see the price of food going down any time soon either.

Price of food is a function of the cost of energy.

HumanBigFeer · 22/11/2025 20:22

I'd like to ask if we have any energy industry professionals here.

I know about linepack ?

As long as net zero lunacy continues, the price of energy will continue to sky rocket in this country. If you support that nonsense, you cannot complain. You asked for this.

Net zero is a net boost to the economy (Unless you like paying for flooding).

It’s unlikely to go down now. I’ve taken to keeping ourselves warm, heavier bedding, wheat bags (don’t feel safe giving the children hot water bottles) and jumpers. We put the heating on during the evening for an hour or so to warm the house before bed, but as our house is old and on the larger size, it is expensive to keep warm!

Please explain how getting rid of net zero would make an appreciable difference to the UK's energy costs. What would be different? Reopening coal mines and rebuilding coal-fired power stations? Importing more gas for gas-fired power stations? Or what?

Not so sure about that.

Capitalism was when every town had their own gas and electric supplies all with different connectors and offerings.

Then the state interfered and mandated things like voltage, frequency connectors, wire colours and (for gas) calorific values and odour.

(Turns out we don't have a free market and never have had. So I have no idea why CEOs are paid so much ..... )

I did some checking and the margins by energy retailers aren't that much.

Is the answer to cheaper electricity prices more renewables?

KellySeveride · 22/11/2025 19:42

No…much like the price of petrol and diesel won’t go down.

The powers that be realised we haven’t revolted and refused to pay so they’ll keep the prices up!

But capitalism says you can't reduce shareholders profits without the company going under or being taken over so...

Once it's up it's up, unless things get so bad noone can make money any more. And then they turn to socialism.

caramac04 · 22/11/2025 18:57

No. My main areas are warm enough but downstairs toilet, hallway and landing radiators are on frost free but it feels frosty.
I used to like to leave a lamp on upstairs on the landing. Just a warm glow really. I don’t do that anymore.

twistyizzy · 22/11/2025 18:54

But Labour promised to bring down the cost by £300 and to "freeze gas and electricity prices immediately to give people breathing space over the
winter"
So any day now bills will go down.........

largeredformeplease · 22/11/2025 18:47

I find this so depressing.

when the prices of gas shot up a few years ago (whenever it was, I can’t even remember), there was so much talk about it, and it was presented very much as a temporary blip.

As I suspected, everybody just got on with it and paid it and it’s now just become the status quo.

Just seems so unfair. It’s a real struggle for so many. It wasn’t supposed to be a permanent thing.

OSTMusTisNT · 22/11/2025 18:29

It won't ever come down but your income should increase every year so in theory, it will take a smaller portion of your income to pay for it.

In reality though, all the share holders will expect their dividend to increase with inflation and so fuel poverty will continue for ever more.

Funny thing is, aren't most of the big energy companies French owned now ?........How utterly ridiculous ?!

There is plenty to find ridiculous here. You may need to be a tad more specific.
