Was I being unreasonable to say this to MIL

Lately MIL is asking DH all the time if DD has broken up with her BF (not so much to me though) we keep telling her no but every time we go round or speak on phone she will again ask if DD has broken up with BF. I said to MIL on phone today why do you keep asking cos it’s getting irritating to us that you keep asking the same question all the time about DD she then got offended and said to me I don’t like what you just said I haven’t said it a few times I said yes you have. WIBU to say this to her?

I can easily imagine this exact conversation betwen me and my mum or me and my MIL. But it wouldn't be a big deal. I'd express some irritation. She'd get defensive. We'd all roll our eyes and move on.

Maybe she is just asking how they’re doing but wording it wrong

Does your daughter keep dropping boyfriends on a weekly basis? Has she told her grandmother that she's not happy with him? Did she tell her that she's thinking of dumping this one? Is he a dick and mil is hoping that she will? There's lots of possibilities that none of us are privy to.

Surely she’s not asking you the question so it’s not your place to answer it?

She does ask me the question but asks my husband more

Does she ask other odd questions? Asking the same thing can be an early sign of dementia or a UTI. I hope your DH is much more understanding to him mum.

Has she noticed the boyfriend is acting like a twat and is hoping for the best? Or does she actually forget she’s asking? Seems a bit weird if it’s coming out of nowhere

I feel like we are missing something crucial here. Is the boyfriend a problem? Is Nan concerned?

RealChristmasBaby · 22/11/2025 13:37

How old is she? Is she forgetting she's asked?

MovedlikeHarlowinMonteCarlo · 22/11/2025 13:33

I would have just asked why she keeps asking. I wouldn't have added the part about it being irritating.

JudgeBread · 22/11/2025 13:33

What's the backstory? Is the boyfriend a nob and this is just a concerned grandma hoping her grandchild gives him the boot? Seems an odd question to keep asking otherwise.
