My dad used to do this.

’Dad, I’m just going to -‘
‘school.’
’the car. I’ll pop back in the house in a minute.’

My brother had inherited this annoying as fuck trait.
’well, I was going to’
’go to bed’
’watch a film but …’

Colleague at work did it to me three times today. (I’ve recently lost five stone.)
’Are you going to stick to your diet over Christmas?’
’well, I’ll probably -‘
’come off it’
’just have Christmas Day off.’

AIBU in finding it SO FUCKING ANNOYING!

Yup, I have a friends who’s a very ‘proactive listener’ - constantly interrupts, guess how stories are going to end (she always gets it wrong) and finishes sentences. She also does it if we’re watching movies - says what she thinks is going to happen or how things end! She’s 10x worse when she’s had a drink so I have to try and let it wash over me if we’re out!

20000000l · 21/11/2025 19:06

I do this but not in the manner you describe. If someone goes quiet or can’t find the words, I might say “do you mean X” and they might agree or not. I don’t interrupt people or finish a sentence in that sense, but rather help them jog their memory if they’ve stumbled

WobblyBoots · 21/11/2025 19:05

My DM does it but I feel she genuinely can't help it.

I actually used to do it a lot myself but I did some active listening training for some volunteering I was doing. And holy shit! I realised that I wasn't listening to people either just waiting to interject. I've since really tried to stop doing it but I think a lot of people do it and are totally unaware

Fionasapples · 21/11/2025 19:04

I used to work with someone like this. It was so annoying because she'd finish my sentence, get it wrong then not listen when I tried to tell her what I wanted to say. She improved after she got some important information wrong and tried to blame me, but I pointed out that she'd preempted me then stopped listening.

WhatMummyMakesSheEats · 21/11/2025 19:03

very common ADHD thing

JudgeBread · 21/11/2025 19:02

My mam does this bless her. We've all just got used to telling her to shut up and let us finish lmao

PennywisePoundFoolish · 21/11/2025 19:02

My husband does this a lot. What makes it more infuriating is he monologues for ages, and cannot bear anyone trying to cut in! Even when he's gone massively off-track and is merrily talking absolute bollocks because of assumptions he's made.

He's probably ND as am I. I've suggested we only communicate by text, but he hates texting.

Idontknowwhy15 · 21/11/2025 18:47

I do this. It’s apparently because I have ADHD. I’m working on it 😳

Same. If it’s any consolation OP, I know that it’s annoying to other people and I hate that I do this too. It’s one of the (many) reasons I try not to socialise anymore.

PracticalPixie · 21/11/2025 19:01

Yes, it's not a great habit tbh. But sometimes people are quite slow to get their words out which can be equally annoying! Obviously not annoying if English isn't someone's first language or they have to speak slowly for another reason.

ChronicallyConfusedOnEarth · 21/11/2025 19:01

InLoveWithAI · 21/11/2025 18:50

It's often neurodivergent people who do this.

Maybe you shouldn't take so long saying your sentence.

Op is probably speaking at a normal speed. I have adhd myself and sometimes get told I speak too fast. My close friend has adhd and constantly interrupts me, it makes it very hard for myself to keep on track.

I love her to bits and laugh it off must of the time but I can’t lie, having any type of important or serious conversation with her is made so so much more difficult because it’s literally every other sentence she tries to finish and then when she’s wrong she tries to explain why she thought I was about to say the thing she assumed.

Ahwig · 21/11/2025 19:01

I had 2 members of staff who did a similar thing. But a sort of twist on it as they both repeated the last 2 words anyone said. “ I’m just nipping out to tescos” “ to Tesco’s “ . “ Did anyone watch Eadtenders last night?” “ last night “. The staff weren’t connected in any way they just happened to be 2 people who had the same VERY annoying trait.

user1471453601 · 21/11/2025 19:00

I had a very dear friend who took this type of behaviour to a whole new level. Conversations would go something like this.

Her "What did you think when x said/did y? Well I knew you'd say they were being ridiculous. I said as much to z. I said, well you are such a good judge of character that's one on the things I love about you".

me, silent.

I used to tell her it was so restful going out with her as kept up both sides of the conversation, so I could just relax.

her idiosyncrasies amused me a lot more than they angered me.

CatHairEveryWhereNow · 21/11/2025 18:59

I have family who do this - when it starts to irriate me I find out The Two Ronnies sketches that do this and then usually irriates me less going forward.

Wordsmithery · 21/11/2025 18:58

Similarly, I get irate when people say 'Like you said, (grass is blue, or whatever)' when I've said nothing of the sort. It happens surprisingly often so I wonder if I'm not as articulate as I like to think.

GloopityGlupp · 21/11/2025 18:57

My mum does this. It is so annoying. What is worse, I have noticed that I have started doing it too. I'm mortified as it's an awful habit.

I do actively stop myself, but it's tough.

TheRolyPolyByrd · 21/11/2025 18:57

I definitely don't have ADHD but I occasionally do it just to get them to hurry the f up. Usually they push me to it with a monologue which could have been compressed into one sentence. I suspect I subconsciously do it to show them that the monologue was a waste of everyone's time. It never works.

PolyVagalNerve · 21/11/2025 18:54

A common trait in ADHD

Upthenorth · 21/11/2025 18:54

I try not to but it’s the slow speech that gets me… I didn’t realise it’s possibly a ND trait but not a great shock to me.

HarbourClankCat · 21/11/2025 18:52

I have someone I deal with at work that does this. Initially I thought it was just me as she doesn’t do it with people senior to me. Now I see she does it to a lot of people either at the same level or junior.

Not tried to delve into the psychology really but it is infuriating.

soupyspoon · 21/11/2025 18:52

My OH does this and I hate it, its always wrong because he cant read situations or people and has no idea what im going to say, then I say 'wait and let me finish' and he just keeps doing it and talking over me.

Furious

AutumnClouds · 21/11/2025 18:52

Sorry! I try not to…

Some people do talk really slowly though and you do know what their entire thought is about five seconds before they finish verbalising it when they could say it much more efficiently and that’s annoying too.

DontbesorrybeGiles · 21/11/2025 18:50

I have ADHD and I do this. I feel bad about it and I am trying to stop doing it.

InLoveWithAI · 21/11/2025 18:50

hollyblueivy · 21/11/2025 18:50

Oh my gosh I am compulsive at doing this and I know how annoying it is. I need to work harder to stop myself.

MatildaTheCat · 21/11/2025 18:49

AcquadiP · 21/11/2025 18:06

I had an aunt who used to this. She never one accurately predicted what I was about to say next! I agree it's very annoying.

My best friend did it a lot too. I thought about finding it annoying because, like you, she was very rarely actually correct. However on reflection it did show that she was actively listening and participating in my (usually mundane) remarks.

She died very suddenly last year and I would give anything to have her back.
