Am I unreasonable to stop my mum helping me with driving the kids to school?

A couple of mornings when she has come round to pick up some of my kids to drop them at school, whilst I take one to nursery, I have smelt alcohol on her. I do think she has a drinking problem, she doesn’t think so.

I smelt it this morning and said I appreciate her help I desperately need it, but I can’t let her drive my kids when I can smell alcohol on her like that.

She says she wouldn’t be over the limit if she was tested, but I’m thinking if I can smell it it her then surely that would be over the limit.

That was my thinking, but she swears blind it’s just because she drank last night. But obviously if you can smell it, she must have drank a lot and isn’t safe to drive.

Theres no getting through to her so thats why I said she won’t be driving them anymore.

Come on. You smell alcohol on her. If she’s not safe to drive your children, what about everyone else’s children walking?

Again, please report her.

Cant you just drop off the younger one at nursery after the school kids?

Your mum is an alcoholic and cannot be trusted to drive your children or look after them. The fact that she argued she wouldn't be over the limit is simply confirmation that she's an alcoholic in denial. I would tell her no more helping with the children and that if she drink drives again, you will report her. And mean it. She could kill someone.

Does she actually want to drive the kids to school? How did this come about?

toomuchfaff · 21/11/2025 14:08

She says she wouldn’t be over the limit

Idgaf if she thinks she would be over the limit. You've drank, I dont want my kids in the car with anyone who had consumed alcohol.

Make alternate arrangements for transport. Remove the option. Its not for debate. He doesnt drive the kids from this point. Period. No debate.

I wouldn’t take the chance!!

I’m glad you agree, I don’t think it’s worth it either! Not when it comes to my kids.

Of course she shouldn’t be driving them, or herself! Is she saying she had one drink in the morning or it’s left over from the night before? Personally, I’d buy a cheap breathalyser (if they exist, I think they do) to prove my point and hopefully scare her into realising what she’s doing.

My thinking exactly. She drove to my house and she shouldn’t have. It scares me that she’s willing to drive my kids like that and isn’t even concerned, just acting like I’m making it out to be a big issue.

She has said she won’t drink the night before taking them to school but I don’t trust her.
