Supermarket triggers. Leave The Bananas Alone!!

This really triggers me and drives me absolutely mad. I can’t stand people excessively touching and handling fruit they have no intention of buying. Every time I am in the supermarket and I go to buy some bananas, I always just pick up the first bunch that look almost ripe, are a nice colour and look undamaged, then put them in my basket and walk away. Even if one is a little damaged I just eat that one first. Job done.

But time and time again the display is being body blocked by one person and their trolley while a queue builds up behind them, usually by someone of a certain age demographic removing every single bunch from the stand and inspecting them individually, prodding and poking them then putting them back.

Are you buying them or making love to them? Stop prodding and poking them all ffs! Other people have to buy those and they don’t want your hands all over them squeezing them and poking them.

No other supermarket fruit goes through this undignified ritual of prodding and poking then being put back on the shelf. It’s so unhygienic and rude. Just leave the bananas alone if you don’t want them! Other people have to buy those after you’ve finished messing about with them!

The people that remove the stalks off avocados so they can see what colour the avocado is. Remove the stalks is what causes them to go that horrible grey colour. I buy the unripe with stalks and ripen at home.

These are the sort of threads I live for.

DarkEyedSailor · 21/11/2025 09:25

Completely not the point of the thread but I was once bitten by a spider that came out of a bunch of bananas.

I check the fruit too. I'm not sorry. It's getting so expensive and quality is going down so quickly, that I want something decent for my money.

I don't damage things. But I do have a good look.

SecondSpare · 21/11/2025 09:24

I have been going to supermarkets for decades, and have bought bananas many times, but I've never seen anyone loitering near the bananas long enough for a queue to start forming.

Snowonground · 21/11/2025 09:23

My mum will always test the grapes by eating one. She was scarred by a terrible incident in the 70s where she bought a sour bunch of grapes. She never got over it.

Are you, gulp, “triggered” by a lot in life OP?

Edited

Hmm. Come on op, triggered is not the word, it irritates you more than it should that is what you mean.

Let’s save triggered for the ex soldier with ptsd when he or she hears fireworks and it “triggers” memories of the war zone they were in , or someone sitting next to an arguing couple in a restaurant and feeling an adrenaline surge as they are transported back to their awful childhood and their warring parents.

unless you are going to reveal some banana incident from childhood?

Now this absolutely boils my piss. Chilled just peft somewhere random. It's not like it takes more than 45sec to walk back to chillers

As someone who works in a supermarket, we know that some people do this because it's 'funny'. We've found bags of frozen peas 'hidden' behind the nappies, tins of peas carefully put in between tins of dogfood... yeah, Barry, it's hilarious that someone has to spend their time searching these things out to save wasteage which gets slapped onto the cost of your groceries...

You've never seen the ruckus when the zookeeper gives one gorilla a big banana and the other gorilla a medium sized one. Worse than EastEnders Christmas Specials.

Monkey and Grape experiment

This thread has really cheered me up on this freezing morning.

YABU. Sometimes there are black marks underneath. I like pure yellow bananas!
Also my elderly mum isn't nearby so I can only do her shopping once a week so she has 4 bananas of varying colours, sometimes I have to break up a bunch to do that.

I like my bananas to have a tinge of green to them so that they ripen fully at home. They last longer that way!

Jugendstiel · 21/11/2025 09:08

TwoLeftSocksWithHoles · 21/11/2025 08:50

Doesn't everyone belong to 'a certain age demographic '?

Even cats and dogs, ...and crocodiles and giraffes and gorillas (although the latter are not know for mishandling bananas).

Last week I saw somebody just plonk an enormous steak from the fridge section onto a normal shelf of food and walk off, obviously just decided they didn’t want it and didn’t care that it would spoil and go to waste there. I was so angry (and put it back in the fridge)

I say good on you though I would have been tempted to pick it up and follow them in the hope I could sneak it back in their trolley at some point.

i can’t walk past the freezer section without looking for partially open lids to slide shut.

TrippingOverMyAssets · 21/11/2025 07:58

Well from the poll it looks like most of you like buying fruit that someone else has messed about with and damaged. Yeah, sure you do…

It’s just not that much of an issue in the grand scheme of things, is it?

Andepeda · 21/11/2025 09:07

Bananas are strange these days, green ones ripen inside without going yellow.

Jugendstiel · 21/11/2025 09:06

Mt563 · 21/11/2025 07:54

You don't eat the skin do you? I check avocados and oranges too before buying, they can be so variable and I don't want them if they're already on the turn.

So do I. I was taught to inspect fruit and veg before buying. I am of a 'certain age demographic' and we used to do the shopping for our mothers from a very young age, so were expected to know how to check for bruises, under or over-ripeness, to avoid waste.

Of all fruit, bananas are the ones I'd least mind other people touching as they have a thick protective skin you don't eat. I'd be put off by people doing this with peaches or nectarines.

Nutmuncher · 21/11/2025 09:04

For me it’s the cunts who eat something without paying and just leave the wrapper on a shelf. I see that a lot in my local Sainsbury’s.

Andepeda · 21/11/2025 09:04

I'm not a bread squeezer, but I do like to examine the date labels and get the best one from the back. I usually have to put 2 pairs of glasses on to do this, which is a bit of a clue to my age. Blush I don't poke bananas though.

RampantIvy · 21/11/2025 09:04

Last week I took 40 minutes checking my bananas.I was aware of the massive , furious queue forming behind me as my trolley blocked the whole display.I , however, am of a certain age demographic, and won't tolerate mushy fruit.

40 minutes!
No need to be so hasty!
If I'm buying bananas I bring my camping chair.

LakieLady · 21/11/2025 09:02

Excelnotexcellent · 21/11/2025 08:09

I pick from the back in UK. 😁
It's such a shame people bwhave badly around these. I grew up with pick your own bakery in supermarkets and love it. I don't need prepacked 6 rolls, I want 3 so I would love to just pick 3. Imho per weight and per piece should come back. Less waste and allows people to buy small amounts they need or can afford.
"Can I have 100g/15 slices thickly sliced of this please" is one of the sentences I greatly miss in my life.

My local Waitrose still has PYO bakery, a deli counter where you can specify exactly how much you want and how you'd like it sliced, and a fresh fish and meat counter.

The Tesco here never reopened theirs after Covid, and everything is now prepacked. Consequently, I buy a lot less in there than I used to.

Fruitfiddler · 21/11/2025 09:01

Fgfgfg · 21/11/2025 08:49

@Fruitfiddler like you I'm a gentle berry tipper. You need to be able to spot the squishy ones that don't move as they should. I'm also a cucumber fondler. It's upsetting to find part of the cucumber is a lot softer than the section you initially handled. Since putting my finger through a rotten Clementine when I was picking up the net bag I also check these and reject the bags containing overly soft ones.

Oh I feel your pain on the fingers going too deep in the fruit and on the soft cucumbers 😫

My local supermarket had Satsuma's in last weekend for the first time this year. I was there for so long that I could have set up a tent tbh. I was checking every single bag for the greenest ones I could find to they would last. It worked though, I still have a bag of entirely green satsumas. Perfect😍

I don't know if it's just around me, but I find 'seasonal' fruit tends to be the worst for going rotten quickly or rotting in the store. I'm not sure why, but it's very off-putting

I hate it when people say TRIGGERED
Ridiculous

bottleofvodka · 21/11/2025 09:00

can I throw mine pet peeve in the mix...

I hate it when im in a queue at the till. person in front is every so carefully packing their shopping in the relevant bags. I can handle that, even though its delaying me.

but then, they start looking for their purse, phone, money, card etc to pay, delaying me even further. saying things like "oh where did I leave it" its like this is their first day on planet earth, did you not realise you would need this to pay mary? sometimes mary will apologise to the cashier for delaying them...

have your fooking money or method of payment ready mary before you reach the checkout.

Lourdes12 · 21/11/2025 08:57

Im sorry to say that I am this person. I’m very picky with fruit and they need to be thoroughly inspected to make sure I can eat them
