Supermarket triggers. Leave The Bananas Alone!!

This really triggers me and drives me absolutely mad. I can’t stand people excessively touching and handling fruit they have no intention of buying. Every time I am in the supermarket and I go to buy some bananas, I always just pick up the first bunch that look almost ripe, are a nice colour and look undamaged, then put them in my basket and walk away. Even if one is a little damaged I just eat that one first. Job done.

But time and time again the display is being body blocked by one person and their trolley while a queue builds up behind them, usually by someone of a certain age demographic removing every single bunch from the stand and inspecting them individually, prodding and poking them then putting them back.

Are you buying them or making love to them? Stop prodding and poking them all ffs! Other people have to buy those and they don’t want your hands all over them squeezing them and poking them.

No other supermarket fruit goes through this undignified ritual of prodding and poking then being put back on the shelf. It’s so unhygienic and rude. Just leave the bananas alone if you don’t want them! Other people have to buy those after you’ve finished messing about with them!

The worst in supermarkets is couples on romantic strolls, holding hands in the middle of the aisle. Or families who take both parents and all the children..

lohpetite · 21/11/2025 11:28

People squeezing baguettes makes my stomach turn. I understand why, but I just don’t like to see it!

Goldwren1923 · 21/11/2025 11:28

Don’t be ridiculous. Fruit and vegetables need to be touched to pick what’s ripe and not over/under ripe.

people are so used to supermarkets that they forget how to actually choose fruit and vegetables FFS.

Coffeeishot · 21/11/2025 11:20

I agree it love a "stalky" brocoli it is where the taste is.

HelenaWaiting · 21/11/2025 11:14

ClairDeLaLune · 21/11/2025 10:29

My mum breaks the stalks off broccoli so they weigh less and therefore cost less!

She's missing out. The stalks are the best bit. Chop them up and put them in your pasta sauce.

MrFluffyDogIsMyBestFriend · 21/11/2025 11:13

It's normal in most countries I think. Most melons aren't ripe enough to be edible so I always sniff them. It's a good tip - you should try it!

mondaytosunday · 21/11/2025 11:11

Have you no idea tha amount of handling fruit/vegs goes through from farm to store? At least the bananas are peeled before you eat them. I hate when I see whole families wandering around aimlessly. Order online or have one parent shop the other at home with the kids.

TrippingOverMyAssets · 21/11/2025 08:00

So what about the ones you put back? You’re not paying for those or eating them. Other people are, which is the whole point.

The fruit on the supermarket shelve has already been man handled, mauled, pissed on by rodents in its transit to the supermarket shelve, seems a bit daft to get upset about a couple of squeezes of a banana skin.

I do this loads... sorry.

Even worse are those people who stand with the chiller door open, blocking everyone else from grabbing something, as they have the 'what shall we have for dinner tonight' on the phone, even taking pictures so send for opinions!

BunnyMcDougall · 21/11/2025 11:03

A banana queue 🤣🤣🤣

I’ve heard of a banana queue—admittedly more in the context of Bonnie Blue, rather than John James Sainsbury.

JudgeJ · 21/11/2025 11:01

I sniff tomatoes too. No smell = no flavour it seems.

Oh that takes me back almost 70 years when I would wander into the greenhouse and just stand inhaling the smell of the ripening tomatoes, my mother would do the same although she was unable to eat anything tomatoey. Even now I like to 'smell the greenhouse' on tomatoes!

AspiringChatBot · 21/11/2025 10:57

It surprises me that you see this MORE with bananas than any other fruit. I'd think stone fruits, melons, pineapples, citrus, and perhaps pears would get handled most often. But I agree that bananas generally don't need to be squeezed and neither the bananas nor the squeezer nor the banana buyers who come after them will benefit.

People mindlessly poking them about when they don’t even intend to buy them. It would be odd for someone to fondle the bananas if they had no intention of buying bananas at all, but the shopper in your example considered and rejected the loose bananas and then bought other bananas instead. Presumably he might have bought the loose ones if they'd passed his touch test. Also, of course, he could have had bananas on his list but decided against them if NONE of them met his standards.

... usually by someone of a certain age demographic ...

What is the "age demographic"? I'm imagining teenagers, but not sure how much banana buying they routinely do.

Well from the poll it looks like most of you like buying fruit that someone else has messed about with and damaged. Yeah, sure you do…

That's really not the most logical conclusion from the poll results.

RafaFan · 21/11/2025 10:54

Not sure about the "making love" analogy where prodding and poking is involved...

Ever get the feeling some people argue against something just for the sake of it or that because they personally haven’t witnessed something that it doesn’t happen? 😂

Genuinely no. I actually do witness a tailback at the banana station frequently, so I do believe you. However as a careful picker of my bananas, I do think you’re overreacting need to get over it.

I wonder if instead of getting huffy you could try a different approach. Perhaps by asking them to stop fondling the fruit and get a wiggle on? Or just ramming your trolley into the back of their ankles? Or…the very innovative idea of politely asking them if you could just reach over and grab some?

I saw a bloke snapping the stalks off the broccoli once I presume it was so he could pay less when it was weighed. Likewise a woman removing the apple stalks.

I am a bread squeezer though I admit, I am not buying stale bread which they sneakily stick at the front.

There's a man who does a quick look for staff then whips out a penknife to cut his broccoli stalks in our Sainsburys...I quite admire his commitment! 😂

Buy the stuff on the top shelves, where nobody could possibly have sneezed on them.

Although I'm thinking of going to my local M&S later, & theirs doesn't go above chest height. In that case, buy from the bottom of the pile.

I’m immune suppressed so can’t risk it at all, but it’s just highlighted how bad it is.

AInightingale · 21/11/2025 10:47

I hate the people who don't queue at the entrance to the self service tills, but who decide to walk up behind you when you're using one and scanning your shopping, glowering and standing there impatiently waiting for you to finish. It's happened to me three times, all middle-aged men, and I could swing for them.

saffronflower · 21/11/2025 10:42

Just move the trolley yourself, if you wait for most people you will be there all day. Some peeps are so unaware of others around them. Standing in the middle of an aisle yakking about their operation and the clogging up till queue types, get on my bloody nerves. Patience to a point, with idiots and piss takers none.

Oh yes I have done this in the past and then I get tutted at or get an angry look because I've touched their precious trolley. I just dont understand why they cant just put it to the fucking side in the first place!

I hear you OP. Its got to the point I despise going shopping at the supermarket.

I went yesterday, and my trigger is people who wander around at a snails's pace in the middle of the aisle blocking it for everyone else or stop to look at something for 5 minutes and leave their trolley horizontally across the aisle so that every person has to say excuse me and wait for them to move it.

I have no problem acknowledging that not everyone is able to go faster -totally understand that, but if you cant, why not move just a few steps to the side so that others can pass you? its not difficult to do that and its so bloody selfish not to.

It's not even just going slow, the amount of people I saw yesterday who seemed completely oblivious as to why they were even in the supermarket! they were just aimlessly wandering around looking confused AF as if they were aliens who had just been dropped there by their space ship and had literally no clue why they were there- zero situational awareness. I dont get it- surely if you deliberately go to the supermarket you must have even a vague idea of what you might want to buy?

I often move their trolley for them. No one's biffed me on the nose yet

I do my food shopping online. Anything that can't be peeled or cooked, I order the version that comes wrapped in a packet so there's a barrier between my food and dirty strangers fingers.

No, I think most of us just aren't really bothered, and think you're getting a bit overly worked up about a very minor irritation.

I buy bananas every week. I just pick up a bunch that look OK, personally, and I don't see the need for prodding or sniffing. But I've never had to come home without pristine bananas, so I don't think other people's banana-prodding is something that really affects me. Finding undamaged bananas really isn't a difficulty I experience in my life.

The worst is the bakery. People picking up loose bread and rolls, handling it while coughing and spluttering and then putting it back. Minging, and I’m amazed these open bakeries are still allowed, or that anyone wants to buy from them.

Buy the stuff on the top shelves, where nobody could possibly have sneezed on them.
