Not to go on this weekend away ?

ohitssnowww · 20/11/2025 15:01

Booked a last min two night trip next weekend
Booked Krakow and they were £30 each (me and partner )
Excited at first but then adding everything up
Hotel is £180 each
Uber to airport £50 each way
spending money £200 each
Then a drink in airport
So your looking at £430 plus £45 to choose plane seats as I’m scared of flying so that’s £480 ish
This close to Christmas
We literally live month to month
We don’t have savings etc
We do normally have around £1300 disposable income after bills but we never save and also our food comes out of this too.

Sensible me is thinking loose £30
What would you do?

He’s the one that spends hundreds of pounds on online slots not me.
It wasn’t because of other holidays why he didn’t want to go …he says that but in reality it’s because he knows it will eat into his gambling money.

Ok it’s all a bit of a shit show

CanYouHereMeRoar · 20/11/2025 18:48

I think you have a bigger problem than the cost of a weekend city break. Your boyfriend appears to have a serious gambling problem.

He wasn’t no,as we have a holiday for June booked for next year (paying monthly ) so has said to just look forward to this..we are going to London for a night after Xmas too so he says to just save for that…like I say I thought wow £30 and jumped in head first

but then making out he’s the one crap with money

To be fair… the boyfriend didn’t actually want to go on this trip.

The OP just went ahead regardless

Easily done OP, you acted on impulse. Best to unwind this now and remember to think and discuss before booking future trips.

I have told him when he gets paid to either bank transfer to me or withdraw it and keep it in his wallet ,his logic is if bills are paid then he can spend his money on whatever .
So obviously then my money pays for everything
last month I had to pay his bus fares to work as he spent every penny he had in the first week.
I know I’m not the best with money but I budget enough and can put money away etc

Well NOT obviously, is it? I mean, it’s not written in stone that it should be thus.
Why should you be underwriting his gambling addiction ?
He sounds like a liability now, and sure as eggs is eggs, this will get very much worse.

VenusClapTrap · 20/11/2025 17:33

Well I was all set to say go, do it on the cheap, have a lovely time. Then I read your update about the gambling! Ditch the loser and go with a friend.

Don't bail him out, and tell him in advance that if he doesn't save enough to cover all his expenses for the whole month he's on his own. He will soon learn to save if he has to spend a few weeks walking to work.

TFImBackIn · 20/11/2025 17:30

Is this the sort of man you thought you'd end up with, OP? You're paying for his bus fares like he's your teenage son. He's spending hundreds of pounds on gambling, knowing you'll bail him out. Is this what you want in your life? He's happy as anything, living like he has no worries as he'll guilt trip you into paying for him. Are you happy?

itsthetea · 20/11/2025 17:26

She could go by herself and that might make the uber more affordable

Sartre · 20/11/2025 17:24

Absolutely love Krakow, it’s potentially my favourite city on earth so I may be biased but I’d find a way to go. You do not need an uber, you could get a train or bus so that’s a big saving. Also don’t think you need £400 spending money between you personally. The food is generally well priced.

itsthetea · 20/11/2025 17:22

Lose the £30 and lose the boyfriend

if he is a drain on you now it will only get worse

gambling destroys lives

To have to pay your partner's bus fares because he gambles £500+ away is insanity.

Berlinlover · 20/11/2025 17:03

Why get an Uber from the airport, just take the bus, that’s why I did when I went to Krakow. Also if you’re afraid of flying you definitely don’t need a drink at the airport unless it’s non alcoholic.

Sounds like someone you need to get rid of. He's irresponsible, a burden and a financial liability.

You need to dump that boyfriend, OP. If he's spending that amount on gambling now, it'll definitely get worse. You'll be paying for absolutely everything and then he'll be stealing from you, too.

TFImBackIn · 20/11/2025 16:57

No, you'd be absolutely mad to go. It'll be more expensive than you think (I know that because you're clearly very impulsive so will spend more!) and it's just not worth it.

Why on earth are you spending money on staying in hotels near to your own home?

ldnmusic87 · 20/11/2025 16:56

£500 on online gambling!?

GoodQueenWenceslaus · 20/11/2025 16:56

ohitssnowww · 20/11/2025 16:45

No,my partner spends a lot on online slots
Sometimes can be £500 or more
i have started making him withdraw money and il keep it for him.
So then my disposable goes on food or paying for nights out etc

FFS sake. What a pointlessly stupid way to spend money. Just think, if he saved that instead of giving it to the gambling companies, you would have zero worries about funding Christmas

I hope you'e not planning on having children with him. He doesn't sound like a keeper.

silkypyjamas · 20/11/2025 16:55

I'm in the YOLO camp. Can you agree not to buy Christmas presents for family and each other and use the money for the memories you will make on this trip. If the trip isn't going to get you into debt then i prefer happy memories to material things. You can make it fun by trying to see what freebies you can get in the Christmas markets?! I've been to Krakow and its beautiful, especially in Winter. You can make a hot chocolate last a long time sitting in the main square people watching & seeing the horse & carriages go by under a nice blanket with the heaters on. Its not an expensive city but a nice break I think you should go for it.

ilovesooty · 20/11/2025 16:55

It sounds like a holiday that needn't cost too much.

I don't think I'd want to be with a partner wirh a gambling habit. No wonder money just disappears.

GoodQueenWenceslaus · 20/11/2025 16:52

You don't need to spend £400 in two days. I would assume that at that price the hotel is offering breakfast, You can have at least one meal a day which is a cheap and cheerful sandwich or something similar. Given that you say the chances are that you would have had a hotel stay once a month in this country anyway, you can save everything back just by giving that up a couple of times.

Thundertoast · 20/11/2025 16:52

He's spending 500 a month on gambling???
