I was turning right out of a business park today - had half completed my move to join the carriageway when I woman decided to scoot round and drag her car off my bumper. This is my fault? Will be told if it is but I am CROSS!!

You should never make a maneuver that causes another vehicle to have to change speed or road position. Pretty sure this one is your fault from the details so far.

LIZS · 19/11/2025 08:43

Unless there was a filter lane/island you should only have tried to turn if clear to do so. Having said that she was impatient and could have waited.

Yep it has a left and right turn but I cant provide a diagram just now!! I will When I can. I just thought that if a car was already committed to a move then the other car had to give way?

How's the diagram coming along?

GrannyAchingsShepherdsHut · 18/11/2025 22:53

No one would choose to swerve around the front of a moving vehicle unless they had no other choice for evasive action. It rather sounds as though you were fully blocking her lane, she had no time/room to stop, and she was attempting not to t-bone you.

Were you on a bend or something that meant she / you couldn't see each other when you started pulling out? Or did you think you had enough time / she'd slow down and let you out?

Greggsit · 18/11/2025 22:41

100% your fault. You pulled out in front of her. She tried to swerve to avoid you but failed. Quite honestly, I'm amazed that you're trying to blame someone else, it's so clear-cut.

InterestedDad37 · 18/11/2025 22:40

In most collisions, the car that's changing direction will be deemed responsible. We need a diagram for this one though, the explanation is confusing and unclear.

Notsurewhatisnormalanymore · 18/11/2025 22:34

There are some roads where if you don’t go across a lane of traffic while it’s not dangerous you would literally never get out. Is it like that? Annoying if so because it will likely be deemed your fault, sorry. Could anyone have dashcam footage? I don’t know the rules but if you were in the road with plenty of time for her to stop then surely she should have taken steps to avoid collision and it would be a joint fault. I’ll never understand people that don’t take steps to avoid an accident just because they’re in the right, it’s bonkers, even if someone is being a complete dick you protect yourself.

intrepidpanda · 18/11/2025 22:30

So you have pulled out onto the main carriageway she was already on and she had to take evasive action ?

NameChanger206 · 18/11/2025 22:30

I have a junction near me, I use it daily. The only way to get out is to start crossing when it’s clear on the first side (to my right) then wait for a gap or a kind driver to the left. That does mean approaching cars may need to wait. Only a total dick would try to squeeze round - I think they were wrong OP.

Namechange29383929383 · 18/11/2025 22:27

Completely depends. If she’s already driving down the road you’re trying to emerge onto then pulling out in front of her doesn’t mean you have right of way because you have “committed to the move”. Cars already on the road shouldn’t have to slow down or stop for someone pulling out, it’s on the emerging vehicle to wait until there is a big enough gap to pull out without effecting anyone else. From your description it sounds like you pulled out in too small of a gap expecting her to stamp her brakes on and instead she had to swerve round you to avoid a full on crash and got your bumper.

Definitely need a diagram, or at the very least a clear description.

insomniac1 · 18/11/2025 22:04

Sycamoretrees · 18/11/2025 22:00

Was she driving along the road you were turning into? If so, did your half finished menoever impede her right of way? Or in other words, did you half pull out and then wait for a gap in traffic while blocking her lane?

But sometimes this is the only way to get out? On a really busy junctions it’s sometimes impossible to by me to wait for both sides to be clear

Sterlingrose · 18/11/2025 22:01

So you pulled out in front of her then.

FinanceLPlates · 18/11/2025 21:59

You should not turn into a road if there’s traffic coming!

SilenceInside · 18/11/2025 21:57

Sounds like she tried! But you didn’t give her enough time to react. You should be yielding to oncoming traffic, who should not have to brake or take avoiding action as a result of your manoeuvre.

Anyahyacinth · 18/11/2025 21:55

I think if they are on the road and you are turning into it, or across it, you have to be able to complete your manoeuvre to go. There is no requirement to give way if a person is already on the road.
If I've understood? Sounds like the road wasn't clear for you to try to turn right across it?

CanSeeClearlyNowTheRainHasGone · 18/11/2025 21:55

GeorgeEdwardsMum · 18/11/2025 21:48

Surely that was your fault?

If the person turning out was already in the road and was stationary when the person arrived from the right then it is not their fault if that person moves into the opposite carriageway to go round them and misjudged the "overtake" manoeuvre .

Proving that you were there first and stationary is hard though

Ablondiebutagoody · 18/11/2025 21:54

Sounds like she was driving along the road that you were entering, you pulled out in front of her, she tried to go around your nose but didn't quite make it. Annoying that she didn't just stop and wait for you but maybe she didn't have time to react perfectly. Your fault.

SilenceInside · 18/11/2025 21:50

You turned right into the path of someone? That will be your fault, and I don’t see how you can be cross about it. Unless you’re cross with yourself for not checking that you were clear to turn right?

GeorgeEdwardsMum · 18/11/2025 21:48

Surely that was your fault?

TheCurious0range · 18/11/2025 21:46

Can you turn right out of that turning?

TwinkleTwinkleLittleBatgirl · 18/11/2025 21:46

Obviously a diagram is needed !

wanttokickoffbutcant · 18/11/2025 21:45

She went in front of me and must have swerved back in.
