An inheritance one

Did you/will you inherit from your grandparents? Or did everything go to your parents?

Was having a conversation with someone who feels hard done by, I’ll call him Tom. Toms grandparents have left Toms parents a big inheritance. Tom feels that his parents should have shared it with him as his parents are already wealthy.

It’s not really something I’d ever thought about as neither my parents or grandparents have any money/assets but does Tom have a point?

Our money will go to our children. I love our grandchildren and we treat them a lot but whatever we have left will go to their parents, it will be up to them if they want to share it with their children

I got a few hundred pounds from one grandparent and a couple of thousand from the others. In both cases, the bulk went to their children, as you would expect. Tom should get on with his own life and stop waiting for handouts.

He can be upset at his independently wealthy parents for not sharing their money, inherited or otherwise, all he likes - but the fact doesn’t change. He isn’t entitled to anything from anyone. No one is owed inheritance.

Most importantly, people can do what they want with their will. He’s entitled to be upset, but that’s it.

People are weirdly greedy as soon as there’s any sniff of money and inheritance. It’s on both sides of this argument.

No, I didn't nor did I expect to, my grandparents' money went to their children.

Tom is a greedy article. I got a bit from my parents having inherited from their parents, but not a lot. I didn't ask for it, both times they were token gifts.

It’s down to whoever leaves it, to choose who it goes to.

I also can appreciate it might feel frustrating if Tom eg is struggling to save up for a flat - and his parents are already wealthy.

Not much he can do about it however. I also think a lot of people plan around expecting an inheritance… his parents finances may not be all that they seem!

Tom is being entitled and greedy. His grandparents can leave their estate to whomever they choose, and it is common for people to leave their estate to their DC first and foremost. Maybe his grandparents thought Tom was grabby and so didn’t leave him anything!
