Labour's new policies for asylum seekers

Are rumoured to follow Denmark's, which include the seizure of valuables from people arriving here to pay their accommodation costs.

Is anyone else disgusted by this?! How will it work, they can take people's jewellery, phones etc., and leave them with nothing? What sort of message does that send?

For anybody looking to flee an incumbent Fascist dictatorship in 2029, I would personally recommend Ireland. Unlike here, they are actually very grateful for immigration and are incredibly welcoming to those who turn up on the shores of the Emerald Isle to make a new life for themselves. A true multicultural marvel.

Are they? There’s been a lot of immigration marches over there and I doubt they would be overjoyed to have thousands of English rocking up.

The people who need benefits and pensions and have free access to the NHS are for the most part British, or with settled status. Taxes paid by immigrants feed the beast!

(I don’t know the details of when new arrivals get free health care beyond the universal right to a GP, but it takes a while. There is now no recourse to public funds for 5 years set to rise to 10 years. Paying tax all the time)

All immigrants pay the same NIC and income tax as British workers towards the NHS. Until they get settled status- fastest is 5yrs usual is 7-10yrs, they also have to pay an annual NHS surcharge for themselves and every family member. The NHS surcharge is an extra £1,035/yr for adults and £776/yr for students and children. Only legitimate refugees get exempted from the annual NHS surcharge, but they still pay the same as British in the same job/circumstances.

Well we’ve been feeding the economy crocodile for years with millions of immigrants and what good has it done?

Edited

You might be right. Or it might be that things would be even worse without the recent migration. I know a lot of serious economists would say that net outward migration would require some significant changes to the economy. Maybe pensions from 70+ and higher taxes.

I suppose Im saying it just isn't as simple as it appears at first sight. I wish it were.

Never thought I'd say this but they should just actually bring back the Rwanda scheme. It was a stupid mistake by Labour to abandon it

Agree x 💯

170,000 too many, that’s adding a town the size of Luton every single year. We’re so used to mega levels of immigration that it’s sad even that seems really good. It isn’t - we need net zero immigration, and preferably minus numbers

Rather simplistic to look at numbers rather than net contribution. I am a first generation immigrant - have never claimed a penny in benefits, minimum use of health and education (private medical insurance and private school for kids) and have been for over two decades paying at the high end of tax bands. I assume that any country with an ounce of common sense would welcome immigrants like me.

I am in favour of immigration that integrates and contributes to the economy and contributes to the country (and yes, there are many ways of checking that) but very much against those that abuse the system (e.g. refusing to provide data of their origin or age, engaging in endless appeals, working illegally) and against a system that in some cases seems to treat those arriving illegally more favourably than British citizens or legal immigrants.

As for today's reforms, I am not sure they will go ahead (Labour seems to be self-imploding over this). But it is interesting that the only aspect of the so-called Danish policies not being adopted are the ones in relation to integration. And one wonders how this play out with the related and much needed (but very much avoided0 reform of the welfare system.

We aren’t replacing the UK population with births. Neg net migration would mean a falling population. That would likely be bad for the UK economy because we have high levels of benefits for the foreseeable

But people are limiting their family size because they can’t afford housing and childcare. Wouldn’t it make sense to do something about the people who would love to have more children but feel they can’t afford them? Importing more people isn’t our only option.

French Riviera is the current plan.

The whole point of this is to make the UK less desirable. Make it less desirable and watch the 'vulnerable' men vanish. It's should have been done a long, long time ago.

Don’t worry, the UK is generally undesirable for most people around the world. If you speak to people in other countries, they don’t like the English people very much. And despite that, they still come here and work their backsides off to improve our lives.

The economy isn’t doing too bad in all honesty, the vast majority of our growth is propped up by diligent immigrants who come to this country and outwork the feckless locals exponentially, only to be told they aren’t welcome and should go home.

So we steal from the vulnerable rather than deal with the racist rot?

I am curious to hear a little reminder of a lesson from your Imperial past, please

Labour - smoke and mirrors, waiting to be booted or the next GE to come, so saying things without any content into them. They are laughing stock but what enrages me is why they keep making the electorate such as well

Mrs Mahmood's last interest is doing anything at all.

I will help with your immigration concerns.
I’m about to join the 5.5 million British expats emigrating away from what is quickly looking very fascist.
I won’t fly back to health tourist the NHS either like many expats do.

Bye then!

They aren’t talking about confiscating people’s jewellery and phones on arrival. They are talking about people who get hundreds of pounds sent to them every month from family abroad and drive around in Audis while the taxpayer funds their accommodation. What they are saying is that those individuals who have cash assets and vehicles that many tax payers can’t afford should pay something towards their own accommodation. Although I’m not convinced too many asylum seekers are receiving hundreds of pounds a month in financial support from family and driving around in Audis.

Exactly Funny how ppl are all for social housing tenants being kicked out should they earn more.

Ok. So the chicken nugget debacle may not have been the right choice to reference my point. But the facts remain, the ehrc is continually being used to prevent policies being implemented. Rwanda? The current one-in-one-out Labour policy? All stymied by the ehrc.

My main point is that if people keep asserting things that arent true or are huge exaggeration or over generalisations we won't be able to have a sensible discussion.

I dont think the one in one out policy was stymied by the ECHR as a policy just one particular case. In fact I'd go so far as to say that the EHCR blocking government action is one of those huge exaggerations. Enough truth (but only just enough) to make politicians not be laughed at when they suggest this as a problem.

Ablushingcrow · 17/11/2025 16:03

frommyheadtomyfeet · 17/11/2025 08:03

I’m sorry but targeting the most vulnerable people as opposed to the vile racists is what’s going to make it worse.

Imagine you’re fleeing a war torn country. You might pick to take things with you, like jewellery. I know if I were to flee, I’d take my nan’s necklace with me as it has a lot of sentimental value. If that got stolen from me by a government I’d be absolutely bereft. It’s reminiscent of Nazi policies.

Don't be so ridiculous, they are most certainly not the most vulnerable people, you are deluded if you think that. Call me racist/naxi/whatever buzzwords you want, I don't care.

It’s a bit different selling a house to find care than stealing jewellery!!!

I’ve had to sell my jewellery, amongst other things to pay my rent in the past. Selling possession to pay for things isn’t just a refugees event,
