Labour's new policies for asylum seekers

Are rumoured to follow Denmark's, which include the seizure of valuables from people arriving here to pay their accommodation costs.

Is anyone else disgusted by this?! How will it work, they can take people's jewellery, phones etc., and leave them with nothing? What sort of message does that send?

Why is it racist to say our country is overpopulated to a disastrous degree and we cannot continue to take half a million people a year?

We aren’t overpopulated. We have loads of land but 50% of land is owned by only 20 organisations / families. That’s not just green beautiful land. England has the strangest laws in place that protect land owners - protect them from anyone else finding out, should they want, that they own land. Guy Shrubsole wrote a book called “Who Owns England?” Getting under the skin of this. We have plenty of money and plenty of land - it’s just one hands of a super small group of people, many of whom don’t live here. I’m in my late 40s and seriously, have never seen anything like the sheer bile coming out of far right corners - that are creating fear and manipulating the very real concerns many have that there isn’t affordable housing, that the nhs is on its knees, that education is too expensive, that our bills are too expensive, that food is too expensive, that public transport is too expensive….we are in the midst of a depression, we have gone past a recession. England is built on the backs of migration and also England still governs 30 + countries via the commonwealth. It is an international country and also if it wants to pull the draw bridge up then really it has to sort out the legacy of its past and be consistent with its relationship with commonwealth countries too…..

I dont understand why they shouldn't be expected to fund their own accommodation. The rest of us have to!

I think yabu Op. These measures are long overdue and she's right. If we dont tackle it it will tear our country apart. We simply can't cope with the numbers. We face it head on copying a proven system from Denmark or we will lurch to the far right with Farage as pm.

How do you envisage people will fund their own accommodation. Do you mean by working?

Or if you mean with valuables, what exactly?

Some good ideas to begin the process of making the UK less attractive to economic migrants.

To the OP, Labour have just said, literally minutes ago, that no personal effects will be taken at the border.

At least its better than sending migrants to imaginary islands or flying them to war torn countries where we do not fly to or deporting to countries that will not accept back their own citizens, the "refuse student visa" plan is a start as well, though will impact on UK Uni's if widened out, which it will have to be.

It’s not going to do what Labour want. As the one in one out didn’t.

People applauded that too.

More than 50% of asylum seekers go onto claim benefits as soon as they are granted stay. Straight from the mouth of the home office minister on the media round this morning.

No one is prepared to gaslit anymore that asylum seekers are contributing to the system. And who can blame them. It’s basically open borders and free everything. It cannot go on.

So many DON'T claim benefits. What if the dependent half+ no longer claimed after, say, 3 months? Or 6 months? Would that be OK? What are these benefits they claim? Are some or most in-work benefits which might point to a degree of integration (if they're working) and of the opportunity to develop a better income in the future?

Of course it might be true that the overwhelming majority of successful asylum claimants are not trying to improve their economic situation but there are lots of statements like those you reported here that bear greater scrutiny and don't tell the full story.

So should the many ‘’expat’’ British people who emigrate to different countries, don’t learn the language and just refuse to integrate, instead opening up English shops and restaurants and making little England. That’s all hunky dory though, isn’t it? The same standards we expect of others don’t apply to us. The British are staggeringly entitled and arrogant beyond belief.

Ethnic communities in the UK do exactly that. Have you never noticed the Polish shops, the Asian shops, Chinese, Indian. African
Or is it only Brits abroad that arent allowed to do the same?

Arcencielle · 17/11/2025 18:35

To OP’s question, what sort of message does that send? => I wish it would discourage people to come to the UK but I doubt it will be sufficient to move the needle and the far right will continue to make process as everywhere else in the world.

24kPalamino · 17/11/2025 18:02

And, just to add, they have a choice. It’s not like we’re forcing them to flee here from France. If they don’t want to contribute to British society, they can opt not to come over.

What if they DO want to contribute to British society? Would those ones be OK? How do you know they do or don't want to contribute?

EasternStandard · 17/11/2025 18:34

What happened with the work thing, did the proposals include the ability to work?

Maybe they don’t have passports. Only 85% of Brits do. Repressive regimes will not allow people to travel freely, poor countries have lower rates of passport holders, etc

Can I just point out that not having a passport does not prevent you saying where you are from?

It's only up to the locals. We cannot dictate what locals on different country are or are not happy with.
Same way like we don't want people from x country telling us in UK what to do

The expats in Spain aren’t going through an asylum system, they’ve chosen to live there because it’s warmer, that’s why they have to support themselves, and guess what? So do immigrants that aren’t asylum seekers here. You can bet your bottom dollar though, that if a load of Spaniards ( or other nationality) came to the UK as a holiday destination and decided to do what we do over there here, you’d have flag shaggers baying for blood ‘we want are cuntry back!!!! How dare they have street signs in Spanish!?, and we don’t want to eat any of that forrin muck!!!’🤣🤣

And you could argue that the ‘asylum seekers’ coming here are choosing the UK over other safe countries that they travel through to get here, so it would seem both sets are choosing based on preference. The thing is too that brits choosing Spain as holiday destinations are actually massively helping the economy there as a lot of Spanish towns actually rely on tourism, and would be up the creek without a paddle if tourists stopped going, hence English signage etc. Obviously holidaying is completely different to actually moving to live somewhere permanently. You’re trying to compare situations which aren’t comparable I’m afraid….

It’s not stealing. It’s contributing to the services they are going to use. The welfare system; the roads; schools; the NHS.

In the past I’ve had to sell family heirlooms to pay my bills. That’s life. My great nan’s gold gate bracelet was particularly painful, but had to be done. I really don’t see why you’re getting upset about this. Personally I see it as fair.

What do you think the men, it’s mostly men, will have to hand over on arrival across the Channel?

It’s smoke and mirrors from Labour.

I can't read if that's sarcasm or not🙈
I assume yes.

I knew people who did that and it was mind boggling. They literally paid smugglers to smuggle them back from next country because they gave up their citizensip etc.
It was not life or death of relative situations, just annual family visit.

Yes, sorry - sarcasm.

This thread is a good example of the fact that a Reform government is inevitable.

Are people really as naive as they pretend to be on this thread. These are not asylum seekers, they are economic migrants. You can’t blame them, anyone would do the same. But the system is unsustainable and people are not happy with it. No matter what the leftie echo chamber of a small minority thinks.

To be honest I get the general impression that most people on this thread wish to see fewer asylum seekers. It certainly doesn't feel like a leftie echo chamber.

I don't know any recent asylum seekers so I don't pretend to know what proportion of them are genuinely in need of asylum and which are just here for better economic prospects. But I'm fairly certain that a proportion are indeed in need of protection. Whether thats a majority or a minority is subjective.

I do know that I lack some posters' utter certainty in their views but suspect they hold those through conviction rather than evidence.

But it’s not ‘hunky dory’. One doesn’t have to be exclusive to the other. I strongly take issue with people choosing to live here without learning English, who choose not to integrate. And equally, I disagree with ex pat Brits moving abroad doing the same thing. Although has to be said that ex pats have to support themselves so aren’t a drain on their new country, unlike the immigrants we take in here.

Vaxtable · 17/11/2025 18:00

I haven’t read the full thread because I can’t be bothered

But at the end of the day we can’t afford all the asylum seekers,( not that a lot are most appear to e economic migrants trying it on)

asylum seekers should stay in the first safe country they come to, and by all means look to move to the Uk, but through proper channels with visas and the rest as well as having funds to stay here without help from the UK Government

I agree taking rings off fingers is not on, but if someone arrives with a load of valuables why shouldnt they pay

Having experienced Spanish hospitals, I can assure you that those expats will be expected (and rightly so) to pay for an interpreter if they can't understand the language. And they won't be provided leaflets or other forms of literature in English, but in Spanish only.

As for creating little outposts of their home country, I find it rather sad (what is the point of moving abroad if you are not embracing the culture) as I find (the more prevalent and not-yet-mentioned in this thread) the lack of integration in many areas in the UK. That is why, as mentioned in a previous post, it is interesting what will be done (or not) on the integration front.

Livelovebehappy · 17/11/2025 17:53

SouthernAccents · 17/11/2025 17:45

Asylum seekers who return to their home countries on holiday will be denied refugee status under Labour’s new plans.

How cruel!

Well, you know, it kind of makes sense? If someone comes here to escape danger in their country, but then returns to visit family, it clearly shows they've lied through their arses to get asylum here, so on that basis alone they should be stopped from coming back here.
