So who is going to be brave enough to ask whether Shabana Mahmood's proposed reforms are right/sensible/racist?

Is Shabana Mahmood right or wrong to restrict asylum seeker's rights? In general?

exactly 🤣🤣!!

They are finally starting to acknowledge and read the mood of the country. But it won’t save them they are sunk.

So let me get this right.
If they improve the immigration problem, you are not happy.
If they start to improve our NHS, schools etc (which Labour tend to do), you're not happy.

Don't tell me, a Reform voter? 🙃

I agree with her stance. We need to get on top of this.

Yes and they spent a fair amount of energy telling everyone how wrong and far right they were.

It was a very strange and pointless snipe at you imo! Still, gotta have a hobby eh? 😀

If they would like to pay me a very senior civil servant's salary, I would graciously consider it!

Now they're worried about having 152 far right AFD MPs in their parliament, at one time that would have been unthinkable.

That's what happens when you ignore people. Labour, take note.

Bit of a snippy response. For clarity, I have not ever claimed to know all the answers. I am shockingly bad at admin and would be a catastrophe at the Home Office, but I am still allowed to be interested and ask questions, or would you disagree?

Well, as a superior being with all the answers, how about you rock up to Westminsted and tell Keir that you could run the office so much better, Im sure you would be extremely successful at the post. Such a shame you are going to remain a Mumsnet armchair expert instead.

Agree and it’s long overdue.

Labour reacting now but it’s too little too late.

No, not a journalist and never have been, @Ihatetomatoes. Just a former student of political science with an interest in why the Home Office is so very difficult to run well. I'm retired, and a One Nation style Tory for disclosure. And I started the thread because it was all over the papers yesterday and there was nothing on MN.

The German government has woken up, just like ours is doing. You can't keep ignoring people or calling them far right. Those insults don't stick anymore. All of Western Europe is starting to toughen up their borders.

Can you be sure how many were White/Christian born outside of Europe? bearing in mind the colonial past of much of Europe in Africa and Asia.

"Americas" could mean anything.

& hasn't the UK taken in 10s of 1000s of HK nationals who are from Asia?

No, I can't say, but on another thread a poster linked to this article - the thread closed before I could point out that the family of ten are actually French and moved to the UK as EU citizens (I think everyone just looked at the photograph);

https://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-3780802/Jobless-French-migrant-family-handed-44-000-benefits-year-warned-homeless-reject-house-turning-THREE-small.html

Another indication here;

^Since the end of the 1990s significant numbers of former refugees have made use of the right to free mobility as EU citizens and moved internally within the EU. It is estimated that one third of the Dutch Somali community (around 10,000 people) has moved to the United Kingdom (UK).

The Hong Kong Scheme is not cheap:
To apply for a British National (Overseas) visa, or to apply to switch to or extend one, you must:

  • pay the visa application fee
  • pay the healthcare surcharge
The first time you apply you must prove that you have enough money to support yourself and your family members for at least 6 months while you’re in the UK. Health surcharge -
  • £2,587.50 if you’re staying for 2 years and 6 months
  • £5,175 if you’re staying for 5 years
For each child (under 18), it costs:
  • £1,940 if you’re staying for 2 years and 6 months
  • £3,880 if you’re staying for 5 years

So you agree or not that they will be to blame for future harsher measures by other parties? I thought that's what we were talking about but your response isn't clear.

I think they’re removing earlier barriers eg the whole you’re far right, racist if you want lower asylum claims, or it’s only culture wars.

They can’t say that anymore, so these new policies have to work for them. Although they’ve alienated so many people maybe they won’t get those votes back anyway.

For a while Labour used it’s culture wars, far right, racist even to deflect - it’s hypocritical but that’s all gone.

They can’t rely on that anymore as they want to be seen as ‘tough’ and in touch with the electorate.

The earlier stuff was said to be the game changer needed (one in one out etc) but here’s another one. We’ll see.

To be fair, Reform will get in if Labour are not seen to do anything - easily. We've already seen that start to happen and their measures are far harsher. Leaving ECHR, chucking out those with IDL, returning all people by boat without due process etc and we are seeing on here, and other social media type place where people's views are aligning with Reforms.. Even the tories now are getting worse with what they say they will do.

I don't think we can totally lay the blame at Labour here for future decisions by nastier parties.

What harsher measures?

The "Deport within 1 week" by Phip and Farage have been debunked as totally impossible.

Only if they obey the law. We are starting to see leaders ignore laws - Trump is a prime example.

Papyrophile · 17/11/2025 20:24

I always thought we had a responsibility towards HK, and I generally think the HK migrants will fit in just fine to the UK. First gen arrivals will be here to work, heads down, and make sure their kids fit in and qualify for second generation success as professionals. Like the Ugandan Asians who arrived in the 70s from East Africa. Who are now an established element of the middle class and as British as I am, although they might cheer for India at cricket. I remain in need of conviction that Muslim migrants will adopt Englishness as their primary identity. I know that sounds imprecise but Islam is a do or die religion, and Europe largely left that absolutist phase of purity behind in the 16th century.

It’s a gamble by Labour. If it doesn’t work after their other attempts which were meant to be game changers then they’ve set the scene for harsher measures by someone else.

Agree. Labour is no longer in a position to ignore this issue, rightly or wrongly. To ignore it is opening the door to the far right and that's not so far fetched as it seems when see the comments that we are seeing.

Horrible times.
