So who is going to be brave enough to ask whether Shabana Mahmood's proposed reforms are right/sensible/racist?

Is Shabana Mahmood right or wrong to restrict asylum seeker's rights? In general?

Well said. I don’t know about Shabana being racist but some of these comments are straight out of the reform handbook

Some are more ok with Labour doing this and setting the tone.

In all honesty, how the heck would anyone know if a rapist or not, esp if never raped before? So you propose no immigrants, whatsoever allowed in the UK just in case because the UK has it's own rapists?!

I think it’s just tough talk with Shabana Manhood. Nothing is going to stop small boat crossings. Nothing is going to change. We will still continue seeing lawyers and various pressure groups doing everything possible to frustrate any attempt to remove people. Even now we still have people who’s asylum claims were rejected years ago still living in the country and making appeal after appeal after appeal.

I think she mentioned that changing the laws to make it easier to remove failed/overstayed migrants. I presume what you are talking about is what she's keen to stop?

Not many children coming via the boats. Refugees used to be the vulnerable, elderly, children, women. Most young to middle aged men were the most likely, as in Ukraine, to remain in their home countries.

About 15% of arrivals on boats is children afaik. That's still quite a lot.

The tone of these threads is just depressing. I understand that people have genuine concerns about immigration, but people talk about migrants as if they're sub-human.

There is no compassion. No empathy. No humanity. I hate what our society has become.

Can’t vote because you haven’t explained your intention for the options.
I am glad labour is doing this. She is quite right that it is essential to stop the issue of immigration dividing the country.
I am a lifelong labour voter but hugely disappointed by this government so far.
I hope labour mps get behind this and it doesn’t turn into a huge squabble with name calling and empire building.

It's the rapes. It tends to be an empathy killer.

And yes I know British men rape too, that's not an argument for more of it.

I think Labour have absolutely no choice than to be seen to do something. Vast majority of the UK has fallen for the rubbish that blames immigrants for all the things wrong in this country, they conflate often illegal and legal immigrants, of which the latter is in much higher numbers and cannot see that public services etc are because of years of underfunding, not completely down to immigration.

I also think that the likes of Reform being in power, immigrants will be treated a heck of a lot worse than what Labour are proposing and that's pretty scary.

That said, if this starts to stop people making the dangerous journey on an unsuitable boat and paying the people traffickers then ok, it's a start. They should be able to apply from another country too, instead of having to be on British soil. They also need to clamp down on the illegal workers, who a, can be exploited badly and b, not paying taxes. Stop that, that also will help people think twice about getting aboard a dangerous boat. I do not think that so-called economic migrants should not be granted asylum at all, that's not what asylum is about.

Sadly, I have zero confidence that any government will a, be able to keep track of those granted asylum (I don't think they even know who is here) and b, be able to afford to keep track of everyone and the personal situation of each and every one. Our Home Office is poor and it kind of renders the whole thing useless imo, people will just disappear.

Labour need to get a grip ,and not have the backbenchers piss on their chips .
Otherwise we know what's coming at the next election.
Praying this is the start of labour taking charge

PropertyD · 16/11/2025 20:22

We shouldn’t allow appeal after appeal and give them a chance to get a women pregnant and then claim right to family life.

Where are we going to send these people back to though especially if they are lying about where they have come from, their age etc. we always seem to give people the benefit of the doubt.

Who is ‘them’. Many migrants make the country a better place. Why not blame the issues that cause difficulties in the first place like excessive profits and excessive wealth rather than a few thousand migrants.

5MinuteArgument · 16/11/2025 20:20

We are in a similar situation as Denmark. The liberal-left are terrified of the rise of the far right, because they can't deal with illegal immigration.

I just hope Labour's plans are genuine and not just an attempt to shut people up. If they don't get a grip they'll will be cast into the dustbin of history. And they know it.

Whilst sending people home once it's safe sounds good in practice, what happens when ten years from now they've married and had three kids here? Are they really saying they'll be sent back? Without their kids?

The children would go with them. I don't think being just born in the UK confers any specific residency rights.

We could do far more to sort out our problems and not blame them on migrants. And we have caused a lot of the issues leading to migration in the first place.

Supersimkin7 · 16/11/2025 20:10

Parts of London now have 0 social housing for locals, whatever colour we are.

Illegal immigrants taking over a country’s social housing is insane, but it’s happened.

Playing the race card is particularly daft given most of the people who’ve been denied housing in London aren’t white. It’s a bit more than daft, it’s offensive.

Whistonia · 16/11/2025 20:07

HearMeOutt · 16/11/2025 19:57

The birth rate is decreasing but immigration is so high our net population has been increasing by half a million to a million a year. It’s madness. And we are not rich. We are in managed downward spiral with few options.

Most of that is legal immigration which is needed. What we need to do is deal with the issues that cause migration. And the issues that cause poverty. Why do we give millions of pounds to companies based in other countries who own our water? Why do we always have enough money to support counties kill people.

I agree with the proposals too, but doubt they’ll get through parliament without a lot of watering down.

Supersimkin7 · 16/11/2025 19:59

None of the proposed changes is racist, so there’s no argument,

Labour have relied on this rhetoric a lot.
