Donald Trump BBC

If Donald Trump gets compensation from the BBC to the tune of a million, which might affect our license fee payments, would it be appropriate to stop buying goods from US for a while. I think the BBC were wrong to misrepresent what Trump said, but effectively suing the population as a retaliation seems a step too far.

I hope he sues them for a lot more-and wins. What other news stories have they edited to give a different version? It might make the bbc report the truth.
Plus I don't pay a licence fee and won't affect me

What would that gain?
Who do you think provides better, more impartial news?

Hard disagree. The BBC were utterly idiotic to let this one through, however good they are generally.

Plus on this logic no one could ever sue the BBC however outrageously they behave- surely that’s not a good thing. The BBC have already had to be dragged through the courts by their own staff on numerous occasions (Carrie Gracie et al) for things like equal pay/ discrimination. Maybe facing someone with deep pockets is what’s needed to give them a proper shake up…

Would a successful lawsuit involve having to find someone who saw the original programme thinking Trump was a jolly good egg and changed their mind by the end?

Might need to look really really hard if so

👏

I bet you millions you will not feel the same if it were the other way round. Hopefully most people are still sane and think that provoking him further it will be worse for us.

BBC had it coming and it may be that other things come up now,

calmag · 15/11/2025 15:38

The Cheeto in Chief needs to naff off.

bluelavender · 15/11/2025 15:37

I don't get why Trump is going to file in Florida- it was on Iplayer broadcast in the uk- why doesn't Trump need to file in a British court?

Dollymylove · 15/11/2025 15:36

5 billion dollars is a lot of wonga but nowhere near what the so-called comedian Lenny Henry wants us to pay in slave reparations 😉

It needs more than that - he'd need proof it actually damaged him. In fact, he subsequently won the election.

tobee · 15/11/2025 15:35

Trump: look at this! The BBC!!!!

Trump: Epstein? FAKE NEWS!!!! Nothing to see here.

They have less than 2 billion pounds in assets.

I think he did say those things yeah. I'm not 100% sure what's going on with the BBC/Trump thing at the moment, I'm too distracted by all the Epstein stuff. I think maga is finally about to implode 🤞

They must implode because surely garbage has a sell by date.

Said 50 fucking minutes apart and cutting the footage to imply it was said immediately after. You are supposed to indicate that time had passed by inserting something, usually a white flash as a transition.

Possibly it was made by a low-level producer and approved up the chain by those unfamiliar with the speech, but there’s no way you can make it through J-school and claim ignorance—it’s completely unethical behavior

I think that the gap was significant and does rather distort what he said at the time. It was a bit naughty. You cant do things like that if you are the BBC. But in terms of what Trump's motivations are generally, l think we all know where his allegiances lie and what his intentions are. It's a bit rich suing the BBC though when you think of the sort of twists and distortions and manipulations of truth that go on in many news outlets.

I hope he is successful. The BBC are a disgrace. Any compensation should be paid from BBC funds, they have many billions.

They have less than 2 billion pounds in assets.

tobee · 15/11/2025 15:17

The BBC should call his bluff. Or at very least stick to their guns. They are perpetually terrified by what the right wing media and previous right wing governments might do to them. And now Trump

I highly doubt any lawsuit will be successful OP. I'd cross that bridge if it ever happens.

I’ve just looked online and in Florida (Trump’s home state) the limit for defamation is 2 years, not 1. Like British courts, US courts claim global jurisdiction for the consideration of such cases, so he can sue them and he would probably win. Though one wonders if the purpose is the pre-trial negotiation and an out of court settlement that may not be financial. Who knows. Maybe he doesn’t know himself. Rich men instruct lawyers to litigate as readily as poor men smoke cigarettes.

Branster · 15/11/2025 15:13

As much as I dislike Trump, I hope he does sue the BBC and I hope he wins.
He's not 'going after' the British public. And playing this ridiculous card of 'it all falls on the poor public when they had nothing to do with this', is a begging card which has no place in the real world.
They should have some sort of insurance for cases like this.
Otherwise just let them go bankrupt.
No amount of license fees would cover such a high payout.
And nobody would lend it to them. Unless, of course, the government would be stupid enough to contemplate bailing them out which they can't afford to do and it would be absurd.

Genevieva · 15/11/2025 15:10

RingoJuice · 15/11/2025 15:02

Alex Jones was successfully sued for (at least) one billion dollars

Interesting. That vaguely rings a bell. He’s the American who was into conspiracies about aliens or something wasn’t he? You see the headlines in British papers, but have no idea who the people are, so you absorb broken snippets.

Did the plaintiff ( I think they still use that term in the US) get the money? It’s one thing suing a corporation, quite another’s person. I’d imagine it reaches the point where the number is immaterial because you were bankrupt several hundred million earlier.

SeaAndStars · 15/11/2025 15:09

The anti BBC treads on here are as relentless as the anti dog ones.

ArthriticOldLabrador · 15/11/2025 15:06

It’s time the BBC became a subscription service.
It’s no longer the beacon of impartiality it once was.

Have the BBC basically abridged what Trump
said? He did say those things, did they just miss out the ellipses?
