To have not put my heating on yet

I am still hot, bearly broken into a jumper yet and it seems people are cold and putting the heating on.
Is it just me or is anyone else still wearing t-shirts and opening windows?
Everyone I speak to seems to have theirs on and looking around I see people in winter coats.

Does heating help combat damp/ mould?

Yes. Lots of UK houses have significant damp problems because we're so far north we don't get sun warmth for a good chunk of the year plus especially in cities our water table is high (175 years of high density/no garden housing). So we do need heating. But, if your house is far gone with more than one damp ingress heating won't cure it, although it will help you feel a bit more comfortable.

HauntedBungalow · 15/11/2025 17:31

Yes, you're right I'm forgetting it was sunny, really sunny - did a couple of great walks in that half term with my coat round my waist. God knows what it would take for them to lift the ban. The Nidd, Ouse are already up fgs. Presumably with all the leaking pipes everywhere the extra volume is just going around in circles with no one able to use it. Yorkshire water are such tossers. There's a beck by my allotment with a couple of overflow run-offs that have been pissing out water these last couple of weeks but apparently we're still in shortage.

No heating on here. I have my winter coats out, but it’s too warm to wear them. Summer bedding plants still flowering.

RandomUsernameHere · 15/11/2025 17:26

We haven’t had it on this week, will definitely put it on next week looking at the weather forecast.

@ObelixtheGaul yes apparently next week is going to be freezing. We've had a good run of it though, till now, considering it's Xmas in five weeks. The grey leaden skies are depressing to look at but they sure keep the temperature up - while turning my veg into triffids.

And even the grey, leaden skies have only just arrived for this length of time. October half term week had some glorious days in it.

I'm wondering when North Yorks water will lift the hosepipe ban...

Wet and windy and chilly here in the north west. Heating on 2 hours a day.

OneBookTooMany · 15/11/2025 14:42

This.
I thought you ran the risk of problems if you let the temp drop to below 15 at night

Twelve degrees according to our grade one listed church conservators.

It is very mild here in Yorkshire, for November, we've not had first frost yet. I mulched part of my allotment in September and there must have been seeds lurking in my compost bin because I've had tomato plants coming up, which is just crackers. And my lettuce is still growing! I don't think I'd have got any new ones germinate (although who knows?) but it's still refreshing from me picking the outside leaves. I'll be serving it up instead of turkey at Xmas at this rate.

Yes, I am in North Yorkshire, it's been mad how mild it's been. I'm used to getting the big coat out early October, but have barely needed to.

Dropping now, though, normal service is about to be resumed. Bit of a shock following the mildness.

Well the temperature (central Scotland)outside today reached the dizzy heights of 6° and the wind would cut right through you, so I have the heating on. It'll depend on where you live and the insulation in your home.

deste · 15/11/2025 16:47

You dont live in Scotland then. My heating has been on for weeks.

StrikeForever · 15/11/2025 16:43

I find this a weird question. ‘Reasonable’ doesn’t really apply to when someone chooses to use their heating. Both the body and the structure of the home bring variables here.

TheLemonLemur · 15/11/2025 16:42

Depends where you are in the UK. We are in Scotland and temp has dropped approx 10.degrees since last week so heating has been on less than normal but definitely on..also feel with recent wet weather its only way to get washing dry indoors if you don't have a tumble dryer

OtherS · 15/11/2025 16:38

Not had mine on, it's not cold. Not worn coat yet either. Probably as I'm in SE - if I was in Scotland, it might be different. But even down here I'll be trying to remember to put it on tomorrow for Monday as apparently that's when winter's arriving. Threatening lows of -2 overnight by end of week 🥶

toffeeappleturnip · 15/11/2025 16:32

This kind of thread is totally pointless.

If you live in an exposed detached house on a windy hill you will probably need it heating most of the year.

If you are living in a house snuggled down in town next to another house that has it's heating on - probably not so much.

Coastal - yes. Urban heat island - no.

An ultra slim person - yes. A person with a lot of muscle and a layer of subcutaneous fat - no.

A sedentary older person - yes. A running around youngster - no.

There are so many variables, it's really a pointless discussion.

Do what you like.

LingeringDogFart · 15/11/2025 16:31

Yikes. Mines been intermittent since October. Mind you I have a condition where I can’t regulate my body temperature and really suffer. I need to live in a warm country. I’d save a fortune in heating.

RuncibleSpoons · 15/11/2025 16:28

It’s really not been cold enough yet to hear the whole house. We’ve been lighting the wood burner most evenings, but that’s more because we love it than we need the heat.

No not at all size 6 and short. I do live with my husband but he’s nothing to go by as he’s just a hot person regardless.
I’m usually freezing all the time in other years and have my heating on in September but looking around it seems just me.
I have taken a rain coat out once or twice but ripped it off all hot sweaty.
Maybe it’s peri? I’ve found shops are unbearably hot lately and can’t bear the duvet on, still using a fan at night.

I’ve found that I’ve needed a big coat on to travel to the shops but once in then I am boiling hot! They all seem to have the heating on full blast and I’ve also heard other shoppers saying the same thing about needing a coat but not for when in the shops.

It was still hitting 16° in the north east early November which we aren’t used to.

shiverjrteee · 15/11/2025 16:13

Our heating has been on for weeks and I genuinely don’t care what other people are doing, each to their own 🤷‍♀️

ObelixtheGaul · 15/11/2025 16:07

I'm in North Yorkshire. Heating set to come on if temperature internally drops below 16, and only for an hour in the morning and two hours in the evening. Our house is semi detached, built in the 1920s.

The heating hasn't been on much at all, the odd ten minutes it's cut in. Today, the thermostat shows 15 degrees, so it will come on later, I expect, but the house does heat up quickly, so won't be for long.

Meggie2008 · 15/11/2025 16:05

Ours is on a thermostat so it comes on whenever the house goes below that temperature. It's came on fairly regularly over the last few weeks. It's on now, I'm on the west coast of Scotland and the temperature really dropped here yesterday and is the same today
