To have not put my heating on yet

I am still hot, bearly broken into a jumper yet and it seems people are cold and putting the heating on.
Is it just me or is anyone else still wearing t-shirts and opening windows?
Everyone I speak to seems to have theirs on and looking around I see people in winter coats.

It’s not that cold.

we don’t need the heating on consistently in this country.

Maybe you don't need the heating on consistently but not everyone's the same.

I'm in my late 70s and pretty active and I feel the cold very badly regardless of how many layers I wear. My heating has been on at various times of the day for some time now and has certainly been on in the evenings.

Some posters are saying that their homes are warm enough at 18 degree but if mine is 21 or colder my heating goes on.

Although, having said that, my heating is turned off overnight regardless of how low the temperature is.

Unless the quota was into 3 figures it would be used up in a couple of days 😂

Not sure how anyone managed to make heating decisions in the pre internet age

Well quite. I meant more like 3 (or, generously, 5) each autumn then cut off. No more allowed.

Notadramallama · 16/11/2025 17:21

My boiler is broken and my house is currently 12 degrees inside. I can't wait for it to be replaced. I am currently under a 13 tog duvet on the sofa.

WeepingAngelInTheTardis · 16/11/2025 17:19

-2 this morning, the heating definitely went on!

Equally, what difference does it make to anyone else what OP is doing? It's just Another of Those Threads, tedious and not remotely original. Admin should set a quota for heating threads in October and November.

Which is fair enough - but those of us who are suffering are sick to death of being told we’re putting others down. I’d love nothing more than to not be hideously hot, purple in the face, and wanting to throw up just because I’ve mopped the floor whilst it’s 10 degrees outside. It’s honestly miserable

Yes exactly.

The water in the birdbath froze last night, and there was ice on the car windows this morning.

My heating is definitely on!

strangetimesbelow · 16/11/2025 15:40

Rural and Perthshire here. Heating is on as I type. It’s cold. I think we’ve been fortunate with some milder weather throughout October and even the last couple of weeks but a definite shift the last day or so.

Mumsnet hates people that don't like heating though and think we see it as some kind of competition but I genuinely hate heating.

Which is fine. There ARE some posters who see it as a competition, and talk about "holding out" and pour scorn on anyone who wants to be warmer than 14c.

Yes, you're right I'm forgetting it was sunny, really sunny - did a couple of great walks in that half term with my coat round my waist. God knows what it would take for them to lift the ban. The Nidd, Ouse are already up fgs. Presumably with all the leaking pipes everywhere the extra volume is just going around in circles with no one able to use it. Yorkshire water are such tossers. There's a beck by my allotment with a couple of overflow run-offs that have been pissing out water these last couple of weeks but apparently we're still in shortage.

Mind you, they used a bit putting the Moors fire out...

My windows are all open every day. I close them just before it gets dark. I ran this morning in a crop top and tiny shorts. DH is currently in the garden in shorts.
I hate the feeling of heat and stuffiness so our heating is rarely used. I WFH and the daytime indoor temperature is around 14. That's perfect for me. Mumsnet hates people that don't like heating though and think we see it as some kind of competition but I genuinely hate heating.

madcatterlady · 16/11/2025 12:07

I haven’t put it on yet either as it hasn’t been cold enough where I am in my house. But it will be going on tomorrow, judging by the weather forecast.

Dutchhouse14 · 15/11/2025 23:00

Well we've just had bonfire night which was freezing when I was a child, ie wearing lots of layers and 3 pairs of socks, wooly hat and gloves and you could see your breath in front of you. Definitely not as cold in November as it used to be.
I have had my heating on though.
I work from home during the day so sitting still and feeling the cold, if I'm moving around d doing housework then it's fine.
I have been wearing coats more as, rain protection than from the cold.
I think it is getting colder next week.
If you can't afford it or don't feel the cold and live alone or everyone else in your family isn't cold then of course it's fine.
But I do have a couple of friends who make a virtue out of it and it's bloody freezing if I go round their houses!! Which makes it uncomfortable to visit them, especially if I ve forgotten to layer up.

OneKeenPeachRaven · 15/11/2025 22:32

Meh, my heating is on 22 during the day all year round. I'm in Scotland, so if that means it comes on in late August (not unknown) so be it and if it clicks itself off in November (as it did when it was unseasonably mild earlier this month), also so be it.

Not in a t-shirt: woolly joggers, a vest top and a knee length woolly cardigan at the moment.

I’m in Plymouth

Plymouth is practically France! It snowed here yesterday.

Does heating help combat damp/ mould?

Yes

Barney16 · 15/11/2025 18:07

It's warmer outside than inside my house. So have put heating on in the evening but not on in a usual November way which would be on all the time. Only worn my winter tights once. Irritating, I love tights and boots. Also love a big sweater. But it's not big sweater weather.

Illbethereinaminute · 15/11/2025 18:01

I'm in fluffy jumpers and slippers with the heating on because I'm genuinely cold. If I'm hot I take a layer off if it's just going to be short term otherwise I turn the heating down.

I turn it up and down and change my clothes as I deem necessary depending on if I'm hot or cold. If I was hot without the heating on then the heating wouldn't be on 🤷

roses2 · 15/11/2025 17:54

I’m in a Victorian mid terraced and mine hasn’t come on either - I was sweating this morning when I cleaned the kitchen! Fully expect to have it on in the coming days given the forecast.

I have never switched it in this late before, it normally comes in mid/end October.

VimesandhisCardboardBoots · 15/11/2025 17:50

We haven't got ours on yet because DP is usually the freezing one who has demanded it on by now.

However this year she's fully in the grip of peri-menopause and is permanently boiling. We're saving a fortune in gas!

It depends on the house as well. I'd have wanted it on by now in our old house but the current one is so much better insulated.

stitty · 15/11/2025 14:26

We’re in a new build and no heating on yet. House is 18 degrees

We are all different. I was cold last night just before I went to bed so I checked the temperature. The thermostat was reading 19.5° and it had just switched to the night time mode of 15° ( not sure how accurate it is), it was pouring with rain and stormy so I reset the time for two hours of heating at 23°. I know that was too hot really but it takes more than two hours for the temperature to raise that much.

I then got in bed, warmed up enough for my nose not to be cold and the house temp rose to approx 21° before switching off again. I will possibly turn the thermostat up shortly as despite wearing a t shirt and a fleece top, my nose is cold and I know I’m not going to be comfortable when I sit to watch tv this evening.

I am lucky though that I can afford my heating bills, spread over 12 monthly payments, they are not too high, currently £147 a month and I am in credit ready for the heavier winter bills. I grew up in a house which had only two fires as heating, ice on the windows and numerous blankets on the bed. My first house when married had a back boiler which went out regularly, ice on windows again.

I swore that I would never let my house get that cold, I’ve seen the damage damp and cold can do to the structure of a house and I worked hard to get a good career to allow me to save enough for my heating bills. I would rather do without other things if I had to!

But it’s fine for other people, possibly younger and in better health than me, to live comfortably in a cooler house, as long as it suits you, go for it! It’s not a competition though although obviously for some people not turning on the heating is not a choice, finances might dictate that. I do feel sorry for people like that and volunteer at a local Warm Space where anyone can come to spend a few hours every day in the local church hall and have free hot drinks and warming soups.

PhilosophicalCheeseSandwich · 15/11/2025 17:43

How could you be anything but reasonable to make yourself comfortable? Did you really think you might be unreasonable to be a bit warmer than the average person? 😄

Fiftyandme · 15/11/2025 17:39

I’m the same - cue the professionally offended who see this admission as some sort of smug virtue signalling.

Sick to health of finding anything over 10 degrees hot and uncomfortable - it’s miserable
