To think my friend was racist, rude or both?

I was talking to a friend this morning. This friend is very concerned about excessive immigration to the UK, and plans to vote reform at the next general election because she believes only reform have the guts to tackle the problem properly. I was listening and not saying anything when this friend suddenly said, ‘Don’t worry - you’ll be okay, because of your husband, and you’re a mother to English children…’

I was gobsmacked at first - then realised she was talking about my ethnicity (one quarter English/one quarter white South African but originally English/half East European Jewish). I’ve lived in England my entire life and as far as I’m concerned I’m as English as this friend who was talking to me - whatever my ancestry might be.

Now, remember, this friend was (I think?) trying to be nice and reassuring (‘Don’t worry, you’ll* be okay’) - but I felt quite horrified and angry to have this said to me - am I being unreasonable?

At best, you're being very naive.

Very. If they are in power they can change laws. And I have no faith they won’t. Farage is a Nazi sympathiser at best from way back.

For a remark to be racist, it needs to contain a judgement value about ethnicity or skin color. Do you think that is the case?

IMHO your friend’s remarks might be more accurately construed as xenophobic. But no one here can really judge based on a snippet of reported speech.

It’s obviously a judgement. She thinks OP will be ok because her husband is white. This shows she thinks those who aren't are lesser than her, not properly British (despite OP being a citizen in her own right).

PGmicstand · 15/11/2025 12:16

People saying reform aren't going to revoke citizenship. They're racists. Of course they're going to say that. But if they get in, which is a chilling prospect, I'll bet that they'll review all the policy around this and start to revoke it.

Pandering to racism is their only policy.

I would absolutely drop any friends who supported these wankers.

Praying4Peace · 15/11/2025 12:16

Wow, I sincerely hope that your friend isn't in a position of leadership /recruitment or similar position.
Unconscious bias training would be essential.
It always amazes me the blatant racism and prejudice of some people, truly worrying

Racism is about treating someone differently because of imagined racial superiority or inferiority. It is not about just recognising difference. You felt "othered" because you know your background is different and are hyper sensitive about it. So no, this doesnt meet what I would see as racist - but claiming it is is what encourages reform.

Many things are encouraging reform, but I’m afraid the time for tiptoeing around them and what they stand for, in fear of pushing people further towards them, is past.

We’ve got to start calling this shit out, highlighting the cognitive dissonance that falling for their bullshit requires, countering their fake news with actual facts- and yes, absolutely engaging meaningfully and sympathetically with the core issues that are worrying voters (the economy, housing, health) and offering genuine, legal, and fair policy alternatives to the VERY familiar scapegoating Reform are peddling.

But we cannot continue to pretend that the real Reform and what they ACTUALLY stand for, behind the “we’re just responding to the voters and what they’re worried about” have any place in a civilized democracy.

The fact that you don't get it doesn't mean that it isn't racist.

The racism is right there if you choose to look.

EmeraldRoulette · 15/11/2025 12:10

Haven't read the whole thread

Tommy Robinson is quite anti-Reform I think. He is endorsing Advance UK now, unless he changed his mind - I don't keep up

There are actual ethno Nationalists out there yes. I had this conversation with a friend who didn't understand why it was problematic that she called everything racist. I've explained to her that there are ethno nationalists in the local area who would kill me or wish me harmfor the colour of my skin.... I think she's more careful about using the word (but possibly a bit freaked out)!

@RicottaOtter it is shocking when you discover someone you've got along with for years is racist in that way. I had a friend who thought Sunak shouldn't be allowed to be prime minister. She also didn't understand why I would have an issue with her saying that.

I’d suggest the OP felt othered because her friend said “you’ll be ok though”.

There’s an inherent implication that some people will not be ok.

She wouldn't have made that statement to someone with an entirely British family history.

The friends isn’t just recognising difference in
that conversation.

I think you should ask her what she means by that comment. Act confused and make her explain herself.

I'm a dual national British, but my German husband, resident for 25 years, is not, as he would lose his German pension.

So how are we to fare under Reform?

Only time will tell.

I'm sorry, there is uncertainty for many people right now.

AngelicKaty · 15/11/2025 11:58

RicottaOtter · 15/11/2025 10:58

Right - that’s exactly what she was saying. That was her point. But I still felt insulted - cos I’m as British/English as her, apart from on some obscure genetic level, perhaps!

YANBU OP. I'd feel insulted too because what she said shows that she doesn't see you as the same as her. She sees you as different - other. This is how she thinks. This is who she is. I'm glad you'll be ending this friendship.

Are you OP’s friend? You are basically saying exactly the same thing as her.

Everyone should vote for whoever they want for any reason they wish.

Equally, everyone can choose whose company they enjoy.

It’s impossible to know what is really behind a crass comment transcribed this way. You were there. You know how you felt. It made you feel upset and uncomfortable. You can decide whether to call her out on it, avoid her or forget about it.

WhatAKnob47 · 15/11/2025 11:49

I'd end the friendship. I couldn't be friends with her our views just wouldn't align. The you're alright because you're my friend and I'm not intimidated by you brigade can fuck right off.

I'm not white. My dad came to this country when he was 9 months old. He is not an immigrant! He, his parents and even his grandparents were British citizens born under a British Crown Colony. You can be a POC, you can be foreigner and still be British with every right to be here.

Shudupayaface · 15/11/2025 11:45

Celts are originally from Central Europe. Anglo Saxons are Germanic.

sounds thick as mince OP
Does she know Zia Yusuf is head of policy for Reform?

Reform aren't going to do anything positive other than split the country further and polarise opinions instead of trying to unite the country!

You only need to look at that useless mob in the Kent council to see how far when left to their own devices, they’ll fuck things up. 😂

The country needs immigrant labour and always has done. The govt. got shafted by Brexit so lost the help from other European countries. It now needs to employ far more staff than at present to speed up the immigration vetting process.

However, if Reform was a party willing to transport the British born uneducated white trouble causing yobbo’s with criminal records, I’d happily vote for them.

But don’t pretend they’re anything other than a bunch of incompetent fascists. 🤷🏻‍♀️

Dolphinnoises · 15/11/2025 10:48

She’s not only being racist, but possibly indicating she’d be on board with actual fascism. When she says “you’ll be alright as you have an English husband / kids”, is she suggesting she would be cool with someone of your ethnicity being deported? And to where? One leg to South Africa?)

Yes - very scary that's what Reform voters are voting for. And I assume she's participated in / pro the Remembrance services despite her fascist views?

JohnBullshit · 15/11/2025 11:37

Get her the fuck out of your house, OP. She's saying you only belong by virtue of your husband and children. Does she think it's a joke? You don't need that bullshit.

Thepeopleversuswork · 15/11/2025 11:34

RicottaOtter · 15/11/2025 11:04

I’m trying to work out if she’s racist or not. I’ve never thought she was, at all, before!

She is racist and stupid. And she’s no friend.

Kelticgold · 15/11/2025 11:31

Yeah, I heard that rant before “oh, we don’t mean you”
I find it a bit tiresome.

Constantlypuzzled82 · 15/11/2025 11:31

Ask her to leave. Say you’re implementing your own access policy to your land (house) and excluding people of your choosing. Tell her to go back to where she came from. See how she likes that.

Jhutcher · 15/11/2025 11:30

Barrenfieldoffucks · 15/11/2025 11:27

Tbh, it sounds a little like you were ok with her opinions when they didn't cover you, and only now you're taking notice.

We are all like that sometimes. It's better to wake up at some point than never knowing you were asleep.
