To feel sorry for the fake admiral

It seems to be a victimless crime and I don’t think he was doing anyone any harm. Given the amount of crimes such as shoplifting that go unpunished AIBU to think this man should be let off with a caution?

You ask @Alwaystheplusone”Is it an insult when King Charles and the rest of them wear rows of medals and uniform despite never having served a day in their lives ?”
I think it is.
Ridiculous and pathetic.
Other royals do it elsewhere too with their various sashes and badges.
In the past were they “bigging themselves up” to be more important than the peasants ?
Now we are not so gullible.

I know this is a stretch, but I wonder what other outfits he has in his dressing up box. Police man, doctor?

What he did was disrespectful but might be part of more worrying behaviour. At best he probably needs some help

He probably used to watch Mr Ben when he was a kid.

There is no deception in the Royal Families medals. They are either ones that were earned by them during their military service or ones that any one with knowledge of medals knows are 'unearned' ones awarded as a gesture.

This man was wearing medals that are given to servicemen for acts of bravery, valour etc or being in specific campaigns that he wasn't. He was caught because there are no servicemen with the combination of medals he wore. He did not earn these medals but the service personnel he bought them off did.

I can't believe so many on Mumsnet can't see the difference.

They just don't want to see the difference.

Walt hunting has been going on for years, have a look at Facebook.

There has even been some begrudged admiration as he is now seen as the king of the Walts. Or at least, rear Admiral.

Either way he has ruined his reputation.

KC did 6 years in the navy. Andrew 22 inc active service. William did time in the army inc Search and Rescue before doing Air ambulance. Harry also did about 15 years in the army including active service.
PP gave up his navy career to support the Queen.

Bit unfair to say they haven't served.

gannett · 15/11/2025 08:48

Have to admit I was surprised to learn this is a crime, and I feel like various resources could be better used elsewhere. Wouldn't go so far as to feel sorry for him though.

And yet when the Royal Family wear a ridiculous combination of medals 'earned' for sitting around on their arses in a palace, no-one cares.

We let the Royal Family get away with it - remember Anne & her ridiculous dress up costume tendy military complete with plumed hat & cape? I really don't see how that is any different.

Just honorary titles that come with the job
The RF have always been associated with the military. The Colours were awarded by the Monarch and carried into battle. Officers received their commission into HMRC Armed Forces. Might seem outdated but that's how it was/is. Pretty sure the various Regiments, crews etc don't think about the Royals in their day to day lives

HRTQueen · 15/11/2025 08:42

I think this probably happens quite often some people just push themselves in the limelight and will tel lie after lie which people often ignore and then they go too far and it can’t be ignored

not surprised to read from pp he has form they always do and likely he wasn’t the only one pretending last week he just couldn’t resist taking it too far

i doubt he feels ashamed

YarraValley · 15/11/2025 08:42

I have a friend who is a hoarder and when I was trying to help her one of the (many) things I found was about twenty sports medals and little trophies that she had bought in charity shops for her son, who was thirteen. They were in his bedroom as if he had won them.

Out of all the weird things, every ikea cataloge in a pile behind the front door, twenty soup tureens, hundreds of out of date tins of food the medals were the thing I couldn’t understand the most. The kid knew he hadn’t come second in the butterfly race.

Fraud is fraud. It's the thin end of the wedge.

It is still ridiculous and vainglorious in exactly the same way as this buffoon. Except she came out of a special fanny so you have to toady to her nonsense.

There is a history of centuries behind this sort of uniform and role.

I notice you're not commenting on the male members of the RF who didn't serve?

PinkFootstool · 15/11/2025 08:17

She's the appointed head of the various armed forces under her Royal titles. She's part of a history of many hundreds of years. Why shouldn't she?

Plenty of other traditional yet civilian-worn uniforms out there - Lord Lieutenants, Privy Council, Lord Privy Seal and so on.

ThePoshUns · 15/11/2025 08:35

I have no sympathy at all . It’s an insult to all those that earnt their medals.

Yawn.

Maybe best not to comment on things you clearly don't understand.

Roseandviolin · 15/11/2025 08:34

Why don't we all dress up as admirals on Rememberance Day, after all it's a "victimless crime"? Other veterans, who only have one or two medals, but paid for them with their blood will be insulted, but who cares, right?

PolyVagalNerve · 15/11/2025 08:32

Stolen valour
walter mitty’s
call it what you like -
but
these men often hoodwink women into relationships with them saying they are veterans (sometimes covering for prison time) fake PTSD, use this to excuse their bad behaviour
try to jump wait lists in NHS - (veterans get bumped up - rightly so)
take up valuable mental health services resources for their “stress related to being a veteran”
they are a pain in the arse of society -
they need calling out
obviously not advocating for vigilante ante lynching !!

notimagain · 15/11/2025 08:31

Thortour · 15/11/2025 07:59

He’s clearly very unwell. Stolen valour is an odd thing.
Has anyone been to the Imperial War Museum? They had an exhibition of Victoria Cross medals which had been acquired by Lord Ashcroft. If felt odd, his name was everywhere. I wondered what would make you collect all these medals you hadn’t won and display them in a space where your name is the biggest. It’s closed now and apparently Lord Ashcroft wasn’t happy.
Some men are odd about these things.
My dad was a soldier, he never spoke about it and it wasn’t until he died that we found his medals. He would never wear a poppy and despaired of men obsessed with war.

I'd cut Lord Ashcroft a bit of slack TBH

He didn't go around forcing veterans or their familes to sell the VCs, they had usually come up for auction.

Without him buying them there's a fair chance a fair proportion would have gone to faceless collectors, possibly overseas, and the UK general public would never have got to see them again. Instead Lord Ashcroft bought them and as I understand it helped pay for the gallery at the IWM at Lambeth where anyone could walk in and see them.

I went to have a look at the collection a collection a couple of times and found it sobering and interesting. The closure of the gallery has just annoyed Lord A off, it's also p'd a lot of veterans off - danger now is the VCs go into a safe somewhere, never to be seen by the public again.

Pedallleur · 15/11/2025 08:31

No different imo to the recent sacking of a Chief Constable who was wearing a Falklands campaign medal and who had lied about his naval career. These people dishonour the Services and no doubt there are parents on MN whose children are or have been in the Forces and those children were prepared to make the ultimate sacrifice. Go and stand at any cenotaph or war grave. That's why it isn't a victimless crime

unleashthebook · 15/11/2025 08:29

There’s a bloke in our town who thinks he’s a WW1 soldier reincarnated. He always wears loads of medals at parades and they’re definitely not his! The only time he’s spent in uniform is during his job as a postman.

Ponoka7 · 15/11/2025 08:27

MajesticWhine · 15/11/2025 04:53

I’m not saying it’s ok. It makes me think he must be a bit sad/unwell to behave like that.

So are most abusers, a lot of violent men are sad and unwell. We need to not go any further down the line of thinking they mitigate bad behaviour. He should be fined the £1000 the offence carries, he's done it before.

I’m on the local Facebook group that it was first posted on. He apparently lifted the barrier pushed past people to get to the front and lied about why he was there. He didn’t just quietly walk past. I think he’s brought it on himself.

It’s not the first time either!

I am on a number of naval and military sites and he is having the piss taken out of him in a way you wouldn't believe.

Man's a "Walt" (from Walter Mitty - google him).

Apparently he had a mate with him dressed in an Army uniform.

Do I feel sorry for him? No, I don't. He deserves everything he gets.

Apparently he had a mate with him dressed in an Army uniform.

Was the mate also a fraud? If so, then the pair are obviously just taking the piss, rather than being unwell.

It really shows the police and government priorities.

Dealing with crime?

That one made the front page - would you prefer the police did nothing? It'll have taken two officers to nick him and one to interview him then write the case file.

It's hardly as though an entire murder squad were taken off a case to deal with this.
