I'm married to an old fart

Please feel free to share stories about your own SO so I don't feel like I'm the only one. We are in our late 30s, lately DH is giving me some serious grandfather vibes. On a Friday night he makes an announcement it's late and we need to go to bed despite the fact we have nowhere to be and nothing to do on a Saturday. When he is home from work TV in on full blast and mostly news channels. I'm getting regular weather forecast bulletins now. Random moaning and groaning. When I say something in my normal voice he can't hear me and says I need to speak louder. Then he gets offended and defensive when I suggest he should get his hearing checked. Suddenly he is wearing joggers and purchased an ankle support thingy. We have young children and I'm planning a family holiday for us, starting to wonder if self catering accommodation and couple of excursions will be too much for an old man to handle.

Oooh I have one too!
Regularly falls asleep at 6pm.
Has the TV on very loud.
Asks me to read everything for him because he has shit eyesight. I keep telling him to just book a fucking eye test.
Keeps asking me to check the weather forecast on my phone, won’t have a phone of his own, he doesn’t do technology.
Constantly asking me what time it is, then says god is that the time already.
Refuses to give anything new a go like, tv series, music etc
Sits watching stupid YouTube videos about politics.
I tend to go to bed early to watch tv in bed. He’ll come up and moan that he can’t sleep because of the light and noise from the tv but has NO FUCKING PROBLEM falling asleep on the sofa with the big light on and the telly on 20 bastard decibels!
He won’t go out if he can’t take the dog.

Mine does as well he is just an old man they need their sleep 😴

I’d be quite interested in that, to be fair 🙂

Me too.

I am in my 60s and my husband is 70. No way would I let him tell me when to go to bed. If he feels tired he just goes to bed and I don’t need to go with him if I am doing something like watching tv or online shopping. Tell him to stop telling you what to do he isn’t in charge. Some men like to dictate and he needs to stop.

justasking111 · 15/11/2025 18:48

The tendency is to become a grumpy bugger at 60. + But some of you are married to much younger men. That is depressing.

AliceMaforethought · 15/11/2025 18:44

Having the TV on loud would make me rage, it's serious LTB territory. YANBU for that alone.

Notsurewhatisnormalanymore · 15/11/2025 18:24

Just let a girl moan ffs. We don’t have to correct things all the freaking time. She knows it’s not necessarily an age thing, she just wants to vent. Vent away without judgement or correction as far as I’m concerned! I made a post about mine being fat and complaining about being fat for over a decade and was absolutely ripped a new arsehole for being fattist! If someone is miserable then they’re miserable it doesn’t make you a miserablist!

SlightlyTerrifiedButPolite · 15/11/2025 18:24

My husband gets waxy build (has done his whole life) but he does this ridiculous thing when he can’t hear where he holds the top of his ear out away from his head and says “WHAT?” Like a crotchety old man 🤣. It is extremely ageing. He’s 39. When Scrooge arrives, it’s time to get to the doctors for ear syringing.

For my part, if I go to bed after 10.30 everyone should avoid me the next day. I’m 35!

Notsurewhatisnormalanymore · 15/11/2025 18:20

I bet he still wants you to look 21 and act 21 in the bedroom though! Bleugh, hate them all 😂

Bringemout · 15/11/2025 17:28

Mine has given me an informative chat about how landing gear operates. Beat that!

I’d be quite interested in that, to be fair 🙂

MrsLizzieDarcy · 15/11/2025 18:14

Seriously OP, I'd bloody run for the hills before he hits 40. DH has become a grumpy Victor Meldrew/Basil Fawlty type character that isn't remotely funny to live with. He's 61, almost deaf and needs his eyes testing but won't hear a word about either and spends all day saying "what was that". He's got a plethora of medical conditions that he sees the GP all the time for but won't take the medication he's given so they get worse and it then ends up being an emergency. He needs heart surgery that he's on a waiting list for but he's already talked himself out of it Hmm what do GP's know with their training when he can google something....

My patience is so thin that all I do is snap and I hate myself for it almost as much as I hate his inability to grow old with some level of grace and dignity.

katseyes7 · 15/11/2025 18:09

When my (now ex) husband and l were in our thirties (this was in the mid 1990s, I was five years older than him) l bought him a pair of lightweight combat trousers (nothing outlandish, they were from Burtons) thinking they'd be cooler than jeans in Summer for him.
The response l got? "Kats, what are you trying to turn me into?"
I mean, seriously? They were bog standard chainstore menswear trousers. Not Billy Idol/punk type bondage trousers with zips, studs and chains.

So l took them back and let him sweat in his jeans.

He normally goes to the gym 5 days a week and for a one hour walk 7 days a week. The last three days he hasn't left the house because it's raining.
He doesn't fancy going out for lunch to meet DC tomorrow because it's likely to be raining.
Not sure when he became allergic to rain.

However he's entitled as he's 76 not 36.

I cancelled seeing my son because of the rain then the next week he cancelled because of the rain (he’s early 20s). Rain’s wet 😬

Easily solved. Go and get the frumpiest maxi dress style nightie and slippers you can find from Edinburgh Woollen Mill.
Do that thing where you make little noises like “oof” when sitting down on a chair. Buy some cheap grey marl joggers. The ones that make a Toblerone shape at the knee.
See how long it is before he notices and comments that you have changed.

😂 (Although a little close to home).

Yes, commenting on everything and waiting around to be given guidance and instruction. Increasingly dawdling - you’re not alone OP!

Gwenhwyfar · 15/11/2025 17:33

zazazaaarmm · 15/11/2025 02:13

Several points here.
Firstly, equating deafness, any form of disability or mobility issues with ageing stands you out as being a bit of a twat.
Secondly, watching TV all the time and being a moany bastard I couldn't deal with. Go out, either alone or with him. Dont let him stop you ever.

Our hearing gets worse as we get older. It's a normal feature of ageing and happens to everyone. It's not a disability issue if it's normal hearing loss.

Kingsleadhat · 15/11/2025 17:32

More ageist bollocks

Globules · 15/11/2025 17:29

So was I.

Note the past tense.

20 years +.

I should have ended it after 10.

Life is too short to wait for them to become a little bit more fun. They won't.

I just saw the title, looked at my dh snoring away and thought yeah me to! 😂to be fair though he has been up early. I get lots of news bulletins and political opinions and get told its time for bed but he is a good man, also he is a granddad so maybe granddad vibes are to be expected

Berlinlover · 15/11/2025 17:05

I’m 49 and my partner is 70 and is definitely an old fart.

wantam · 15/11/2025 16:58

Wait until he's 76 like my fella. I'm ten years younger, and by god it shows. I call him Victor M now, a comment on everything. The recliner chair that was meant for me is now his territory, it has a foot rest and a pouch at the side for the newspaper (yep) and the TV zapper. All to himself as I don't watch TV since I AM DEAF 😊and subtitles make me dizzy ha ha.

I'm at one end of the room playing with my desktop or reading, and he's at the other. Text messages all the way about tea, dinner, etc. It's hilarious sometimes. Not much moaning from him though thankfully, no point - I can't hear him! I have hearing aids which help close up but not from far away.

Being deaf has its advantages with the Victor M types.

OrangeAxolotyl · 15/11/2025 16:53

Ponoka7 · 15/11/2025 07:55

Does it age you? Or does it wear you down?
I'm near 60, I know as many younger people who have traits that are unpleasant to be around, or are liking a set way to live, as I do older people. Why have you equated age with nastiness? Or stubbornness with older people? That's ageism.

Yes, good points.
I'm 66 and my husband is 74 - we are nothing like this!
