To allow DD to buy this 'obscene' top?

DD14 just lost 10kg, went down from 62 to 52kg (she's pretty petite, only 160 cm tall) and wants to buy herself this top since she's now at a healthy weight for her age and was putting off buying new tops earlier because she didn't want them to stop fitting her: https://www.victoriassecret.co.uk/style/su826145/w96067

My sister thinks it's 'obscene' and a 'lingerie ad' as well as 'something she saw on social media' which is complete nonsense because she uses one of those granny flip phones and isn't on social media except discord, spotify and IRC (no idea if those count)

I don't see the problem honestly, there's nothing obscene about lingerie if you ask me in the 1st place, and VS has always made clothes

This is a photo of the top in the colour she wants it:

Better than the wonderbras with half open shirts we wore in the 90s
That was a particularly good look on me. It wouldn't have quite the same impact these days! 😆 😆

angelikacpickles · 15/11/2025 14:22

I don't see what it has to do with your sister what your DD wears. And I see nothing wrong with the top, seems entirely unremarkable. I have a 14 year old DD and would be fine with her wearing this. Would I prefer if it had a different brand name on it? Probably, but not worth having a row about.

notacooldad · 15/11/2025 14:20

Vs is popular with teens.
It was originally it was quite sexy lingerie but now they sell pjs perfume and alsorts so the sexiness has been diluted.

BeWittyRobin · 15/11/2025 14:16

Oh please tell your sister she’s entitled to her opinion but you don’t see a problem with a T-shirt and you will get your daughter it. Honestly nothing wrong with it at all. Christ you should see some of the tops my teenage girls request and is met with a big no no 🙈😂 x

landlordhell · 15/11/2025 14:13

It’s a T shirt. No issue

Sorry, struggling to find a nice way to say that your sister is an opinionated prude who's completely out of touch...
There's nothing wrong with the shirt, it's modest, and although it does say Victoria's secret, it's subtle.
I suppose the lingerie aspect is because yes Victoria's secret is a brand that does make women's clothing everything from comfy full length pajamas and robes to itty bitty Lacey thongs.
That's why I don't shop at big box stores.
They may have groceries and kitty litter but oh my - they also sell condoms and that's indecent!!!
(Kidding of course, but same mindset)

Why doesn't she just get a plain grey t-shirt

Threefullskips · 15/11/2025 14:10

NeverDropYourMooncup · 15/11/2025 14:09

I think the thing is what it makes the male viewer think of. Underwear models, centrefold pictures for the older ones, the calendars - so cod psychology could conclude that it's the wearer telling men 'think about me undressed'.

Obviously this, I can't believe we're this far into the thread and this is what's having to be spelled out

Katemax82 · 15/11/2025 14:10

There's nothing wrong with it. My daughter got a Victoria's secret body spray in her stocking last year. She was 11

Threefullskips · 15/11/2025 14:09

JackJarvisEsq · 15/11/2025 13:41

I was about to say the FCUK ones I had were far worse

Why?

NeverDropYourMooncup · 15/11/2025 14:09

maggie2k · 14/11/2025 23:55

surely underwear isn't sex though, i have a VS bra and the last thing that goes through my brain when putting it on is sex

No difference between that and wearing a Nike top. Tell your sister to stfu and keep her opinions to herself especially around dd

TheIceBear · 15/11/2025 14:02

Is it really necessary to go into exact details about her height and weight ?

OMG I didn't know what to expect but it wasn't a plain grey t shirt with a logo across the chest! For the love of god, the woman needs to get a grip!

It’s better than the FCUK ones everyone used to wear back in the day

Beerhy · 15/11/2025 13:38

😂 thanks for bringing back the cringe 😂 it made the t shirt make so much more sense 😅

JustSawJohnny · 15/11/2025 13:36

FFS it's a T SHIRT!

Just because VS sell lingerie, it doesn't mean everything they sell is such.

I mean, M&S sell bras AND clothes - does this get her in a rage too?!

Is she always a raging prude?

When I was in my youth people used to walk around in a Cradle of Filth Tee with 'JESUS IS A C*NT' in massive letters on the front.

Now THAT was offensive!!

Let DD have the shirt and tell your sister to unclench.

canklesmctacotits · 15/11/2025 13:23

It’s a plan grey t shirt, really nothing wrong with it. BUT (1) I don’t allow my DC to wear branded clothes like this because they’re not unpaid billboards. The Nike tick is one thing; VICTORIA’S SECRET and only that across the breasts is another (2) if my 14yo DD wanted to advertise, or align herself with VS, I’d be so depressingly disappointed that she thinks those models and that Trump-supporting seedy world where the girls all have to conform to one or two types is something to want or vaunt. I’d say no for those reasons. I’d actually be far happier with a skimpier top without the branding (which is also just plain tacky).

FairKoala · 15/11/2025 13:22

They also do perfumes and body sprays or is that also top shelf over 21s only material according to your sister

FairKoala · 15/11/2025 13:20

Only thing I can think of against it is whether the school allow logos on clothes.

Dd went to a school where certain items of the uniform you could wear anything as long as it was a certain colour and no logos

Even in 6th form where the students can wear their own clothes I think the rule is no logos

As for obscene, wtf is obscene about it?

I am more than likely old enough to be your sisters mother and even I know VS does normal clothes, not just underwear and night wear

Tell her to at least do her research before passing judgement

SooticaTheWitchesCat · 15/11/2025 13:19

If I saw it I would just think it’s a t shirt.
I don’t know much about Victoria’s Secret but I don’t consider underwear obscene so I don’t see the problem.
Maybe I’m missing something

SquareEyedSue · 15/11/2025 13:14

young women may wear that logo with irony. They are a fiercely feminist generation.

it is a great top. I love it.

saltedcaramelcat · 15/11/2025 13:13

This is one of the most modest tops out there, YANBU whasoever. It's just a t-shirt and the print is absolutely very tame.

DemelzaandRoss · 15/11/2025 12:52

It’s absolutely fine!!
If that’s the worst she wants to wear you’re in a win win situation!!

Oh god, you just made me remember that I had one that said "fit chick unbelievable knockers" 😳

OP I have a teen girl & I'd not bat an eyelid at that shirt.
