Ah, you mean when it was accepted wisdom that you give your cat cows milk to drink (more than 50% are lactose intolerant), then shut it out at night (they are crepuscular rather than nocturnal)? How about the old farmers' theory that a hungry cat is a better mouser (they definitely aren't)?

I was going by the most current recommendations. Try searching for things like should my cat have a litter before spaying and just look at the reputable results like vets, insurance companies, RSPCA & Cats Protection

There is a saying you may do well to think about.

"The past is a foreign country, they do things differently there".

Maybe it is a tale promulgated by old Irish wives, since you insist on denying what I have reported as my personal experience!

All the cats I ever lived with, and there have been umpteen, have come to me by pure chance, when I wasn’t ‘in the market’ for one since I already had one little dynasty of female tabbies.
The famous ‘Cat Distribution Service’ was doing its thing. Inevitably some had been traumatised during kittenhood and needed a lot of nurturing.
Im thinking of three occasions when different vets over the years advised a quick pregnancy before spaying. It’s clear in my memory, despite your protestations.
(All I can assume is that thinking has changed and this advice is now out of favour. Doesnt change the fact that it was current before now)

It certainly did the trick in terms of fixing their early trauma. Total love for their kittens seemed to erase feline PTSD.
But it was a physical goal too, I was told, and my darling here on my lap is over 100 in cat years, and fit as a fiddle, and very close to her daughter (who’s about 80.)
What larks. .

False alarm - I think we’re stopping at 4!

What a gorgeous picture. Congratulations nanny!

All those who cannot be happy for OP's cat and her adorable babies; do you run her life? And if not, do you wish you did?

The OP has already explained what I think none of you have a right to be privy to and you're still not happy.

Clear off and allow us cat lovers some happiness.

Cheers.

Oh do pipe down. Some of us cat lovers are able to remove our rose tinted spectacles and actually appraise the situation objectively. When we have an overpopulation of cats in the country being abandoned and cared for in shelters the responsible thing to do is prevent even more being born. It's very simple. Even if in our hearts we think it's sweet and adorable.

PyongyangKipperbang · 13/11/2025 20:11

My old cat had kittens and it was all fine.

Why did she have them? Previous "owners" moved, basically dumped her on us and never came back (neighbours) we thought they were coming to get her and they never did. She was already pregnant at that point even though they said she had been spayed.

Also I discussed it with my vet and my cat, which the OP posted above certainly makes it sound like the cat consented!

hehehesorry · 13/11/2025 20:11

Happyjoe · 13/11/2025 10:10

Ok, that's a selfish attitude. We are all responsible and if all played our part, there wouldn't be such a problem.

But, you have the I am alright Jack, sod the rest attitude. Shameful.

And yes, the OP (despite initially admitting she had no idea how to rehome them all) may have found homes for these kittens. What about the next ones, the ones after that? Does she have an endless supply of friends who are willing to take her kittens on? Or will she be advertising them on gumtree for £40, leaving them vulnerable to the people who abuse, or the people who buy them from there as dog bait?

Be responsible. Play your part, same with everything in the world.

Outdoor cats are more likely to be dog bait than a kitten on gumtree unless they're giving them out for free which very few people do. It helps toughen up bull lurchers and some people just don't like cats around because they kill the birds and the rabbits on land they go on.

Growlybear83 · 13/11/2025 20:08

Oh my goodness, they are SO lovely. I’d forgotten just how tiny they are at first. Is the mummy trying to hide them away all the time, or is she keeping them somewhere sensible? When my cat had a litter, she kept taking them behind the sofa until we persuaded her to move into a big cardboard box.

Mydogsnotfat · 13/11/2025 20:05

They are beautiful kittens. It is hard to get a kitten from a shelter. Even a local one. Despite having had cats for more than 20 years, never one on its own either and all spayed and registered with vets, I was turned down because of all things my dog is entire which apparently makes me too irresponsible to have a kitten. Thankfully a friends cat had a litter , two of whom now reside with me. No money changed hands and she regularly visits them so win win.

MistressoftheDarkSide · 13/11/2025 19:58

Sooooo adorable 🥰

It's so irresponsible of you to let her have a litter. Have you no idea what an overpopulation crisis of cats we are in? It's no something to be celebrated. It's something to be ashamed of. And even if you find good homes for them - those are homes that could have gone to other kittens in need.

Millytante · 13/11/2025 19:38

Allergictoironing · 13/11/2025 18:26

I did have to ask around for a bit as I wanted to adopt indoor only cats for safety reasons (very aggressive local un neutered tom who nearly killed a couple of local cats, a car repairer very close to the back garden so things like anti-freeze all over the place, and roaming gangs of feral teens). But I found an independent but very well respected rescue who were happy to let me have the 2 who chose me, and a third a few years later as a companion as one of the first pair had to be PTS. The lovely lady who runs the rescue was particularly happy I took them as they had been there a year as nobody wanted a) a bonded pair, b) young adult or c) black cats.

I completely agree with @Happyjoe above with the reasons why many people are refused e.g. the insistence on one rather than 2, the colour thing, has to be a kitten they won't accept a young cat instead. Then you get the people who HAVE to have a kitten right now, maybe in the depths of winter which isn't kitten season so no there are likely to be very few around at the time of year from ferals or strays. People seem to forget that a cute kitten becomes a young cat in a very few months then you have another 18-20 years of an adult cat.

I can understand rescues not wanting to rehome in December either, as giving an animal as a Christmas Present is rarely a good idea especially at a time when there's all the excitement going on.

Did you know that some people won't have a black cat because they tend not to photograph well for social media? But that's OK, because come late September & especially in October some sick and twisted people get black cats & pretend to be Satanists!

I told the story above of my darling Tobias. They would have chosen him as a kitten because he's one of the prettiest cats I've ever seen - a rich brown tabby & white, almost symmetrical and amazing markings on his very cute face. But as soon as he got past the cute little kitten stage he was thrown out on the streets. That's another reason why some rescues are very wary & careful about adoption.

People have said above that they don't want a cat with all the potential traumas it may be carrying from it's past life. That's fine, there's plenty of people out there like me who have the love, time and patience to overcome their pasts. But whenever I've been there's also been plenty of friendly cats who love people e.g. had to be rehomed due to their previous keeper's ill health, death, other change of circumstances.

By the way @Millytante , try having a quick Google about whether it's better for a cat to have a litter before spaying. You'll find it's near enough 100% saying this is an old wives tale and the real situation is the opposite.

Maybe it is a tale promulgated by old Irish wives, since you insist on denying what I have reported as my personal experience!

Loved this thread when I couldnt sleep very early this morning...the births happened in real time and OP was an excellent supportive midwife.
Best wishes to OP and her family ( human and cat). Look forward to more pics of the gorgeous fluffy black and white mama cat and babies😻

Cherrypies · 13/11/2025 19:28

I have read quite a lot of this thread, and can't believe the comments by so called animal lovers, so many childish comments about ohh, kittens, how fluffy and cute.
The real animal lovers are the ones that are not impressed by this unethical breeding of cats.
There is a huge problem with overpopulation, there are just not enough good homes for cats/kittens available.
Miraculously the op has homes lined up.
Calling people haters and joy suckers, because you can't see the bigger picture.
People who purposely let their cat have kittens are very irresponsible in my view. So is the vet, can't believe they would condone this, just looking at the money, as usual.

Are you keeping them all?

WatchingTVagain · 13/11/2025 17:21

Oh OP, they are gorgeous.

But I'm sat here looking at my 4 x 1 week old kittens from our current foster cat. She came into care pregnant and gave birth 2 days later. This is at least her 2nd litter. She will obviously be spayed as soon as the kittens are weaned and the struggle of finding up to 5 homes begins.

I know you've already lined up homes but as someone who has worked in cat rescue for 10 years it's a never ending cycle. As you already know who will be rehoming the kittens please encourage them to neuter early and keep in doors until they are. Cats are driven to mate.

For info - Most vets will also perform late pregnancy spays.
Any one with a NE postcode, CP are offering £10 chip and neuter (in some cases free) and will also cover the cost of a pregnant spay. (Google CP Northumbria)

Enjoy the kittens OP, they are lovely and in 6 weeks time it's going to be chaos 🤣🤣

I’m very much behind OP’s choice here, but your post reminded of one very antique vet I consulted here in Ireland about thirty years ago.
I took in a tiny and very young pregnant cat from a colleague who was severely ill and terminal.
My housing wasnt much cop back then, and the tenancy was most precarious, so I reckoned kittens would be impossible to manage.
Off we went to this vet, to give her a general MOT and also enquire about a pregnancy-ending operation, since she wasn't very far along. Assumed it'd be a pretty reasonable request.

Cue vet outrage and a lecture about abortion being a crime in Ireland (then), not to mention a mortal sin. I hadn't realised anyone included the animal kingdom in this doctrine.
Between the jigs and the reels I left her to Mother Nature and hoped for the best.
She produced one tiny kitten, bless her. Good God she loved that little daughter so much!

Both of them were with me for the rest of their lives, and my present, extremely ancient cat is the granddaughter of that little preggers waif/cat, and my other aged cat is her great-grand daughter.
What a sweetheart she was, even though the Vatican bullied her. Turned out well for us all.

(Ive often wondered whether that strict Catholic vet even performed neutering snd spaying, given his unexpected reaction.)

Read the thread? Also several people here have shared experiences of being denied a rescue cat by several places because their rules are so draconian.

@Kittenwatch came here for more pics😍 if you feel like posting after the pile on!

I’m not responding to any of the oxygen thieves anymore.

I’ll post more a bit later. She’s resting with them so I’m letting them be calm together and get all happy and fat.

Sorry but I don't for one moment believe that a vet would encourage you to breed or advise how to find a mate for a moggy. I have two vets in my family and they volunteer at a cat rescue charity and have adopted from there. This just would not happen.

(name changed)

Reading the OP's posts carefully, it seems like it wasn't recommended as such by the vet. Looks like OP asked her about it, vet saw that OP was determined, and advised her on the best way to go about it if she was adamant she was going to have a litter.

Your very own words OP.

Not in a million years. Or advising how to find a mate. Just would not happen.
Accidental pregnancy far more likely.
