Going to the theatre by myself

Can I go to the theatre by myself?

there is a show that I really want to see which has mostly sold out. The only few seats available are single seats so I’d have to go by myself.

Will I look weird/be judged?

Im quite happy to eat in a restaurant by myself when away from home, and I think I’d be ok with going to the cinema by myself. But the theatre feels different somehow.

YABU - You’ll be fine
YANBU - You’ll look like a loner

Sorry pressed wrong voting button. Of course you can go ! Enjoy !

Tallya · 14/11/2025 05:34

Of course you can, go and enjoy yourself! Who cares what other people think.

redrose115 · 14/11/2025 04:08

I would 100% go to the theatre alone if I felt like it. I have also enjoyed eating out and the movies alone! The last movie I saw out was Babygirl. I had a day off from work and went to the cinema in the middle of the day. It was just a handful of women all sitting by themselves and obviously no one talked the whole movie. It was fantastic 🍿

Otterdrunk · 14/11/2025 03:46

Yes of course! It can feel a bit less conspicuous if it’s a daytime performance but it’s completely fine in the pm as well. You will notice others in same boat. It’s actually empowering breaking free from the weight of societal expectation.

EconomyClassRockstar · 13/11/2025 22:56

I literally just booked a ticket to go see Two Strangers next Wednesday. I'm having a nice lunch beforehand too. I love having a day to myself.

PurpleFlower1983 · 13/11/2025 22:56

I’ve been loads of my own, it’s fine!

I'llBuyThatForADollar · 13/11/2025 22:54

Sorry voted wrongly. You are being unreasonable! You’ll be grand!

PoppySaidYesIKnow · 13/11/2025 22:51

I’ve started going on my own if I know it’s something nobody else I know would want to see. I like it, you can really get into it as you aren’t distracted by whoever is with you, that said, people nattering all the way through seems to be a thing now so that pisses me right off!

WhatTypeOfAnimaLIsASonic · 13/11/2025 22:46

Went to Moulin Rouge on my own in September and it was fantastic! Felt a bit of a lemon at the interval, but not for long because I got a drink at the bar and my seat neighbours were chatting to me anyway. Have fun if you go. Which show is it?

QuietLifeNoDrama · 13/11/2025 21:49

I do it and don’t worry at all. Nobody gives two hoots who’s say next to them I’m the theatre

Andromed1 · 13/11/2025 21:46

I do it, no problems of any kind.

BellaTrixLeStrange1 · 13/11/2025 21:21

I regularly go to the theatre by myself and I LOVE it! I get a front row seat for the Saturday matinee when DH and kids are at football. Nice glass of wine and some chocs in the interval. Peace and quiet, nobody asking me for stuff! What’s not to love about that?!!

Duckswaddle · 13/11/2025 21:15

Absolutely nobody gives a shit if you go on your own.

Bigneonsign · 13/11/2025 21:14

I go to the theatre a lot on my own. Its nice being able to decide last minute to see something and then just booking a single seat. I book last minute too and production seats often get released on the day so you get a really good seat at a cheaper price.

I do go with friends too but actually love the flexibility and freedom of going alone and not having to exchange endless texts to pick a date etc etc

Libellousness · 13/11/2025 21:07

I find it somewhat strange that you’re comfortable eating in a restaurant by yourself but think going to the theatre alone is beyond the pale. I would have thought anyone would feel far more exposed to negative attention and pity doing the former.

whatsit84 · 13/11/2025 21:06

No I used to do it loads and there are always other people alone too. I loved it.

Sartre · 13/11/2025 21:05

I’ve done this a few times. Nobody cares or even notices.

Formerdarkhorse · 13/11/2025 21:04

I’m glad to read the comments on here- I have plans to go to the next biggest city for the day soon, do some shopping, solo lunch then matinee and train back that evening.
I was starting to have a bit of a wobble about it. Original plan had been to just go shopping, but then noticed a show I was interested in was on and booked on a whim.
I do plenty of things by myself even when there are people I could invite along, it is nice to have my own agenda and not need to accommodate anyone else!
I actually have a (not so nice) weekly evening commitment at the moment and I have time to kill beforehand, so I have started having a solo dinner somewhere different each week and read my kindle- it’s lovely.

FairViewRosie25 · 13/11/2025 21:01

Just go love. Went to see the Springsteen movie by myself as no one else wanted to.

Blackcountryexile · 13/11/2025 21:01

I'd say get your ticket booked! Nobody will think anything of it and they'll be other people there on their own.
I do judge people at the theatre or cinema who sit on their phone through the show who have obviously been dragged there and have no interest in what they have come to see.

notacooldad · 13/11/2025 20:51

Can I go to the theatre by myself?

Im 100% certain you can, in fact ive been going to the cinema, theatre gigs and on holiday by myself for well over 40 years now. Not every single event, just the ones where I fancy it and no one else's does. If I could go by myself as 14 year old I'm sure a grown ass adult will be fine.

Will I look weird/be judged?
Who knows or cares.
And if anyone judged you, how would you know and why would you care. What's their judging going to do to you, I'll tell you, absolutely nothing.
So go, dont miss out and enjoy yourself!

tougholdbirdy · 13/11/2025 20:50

Done it loads of times. You will be amazed at how many people do.

Arlanymor · 13/11/2025 20:49

I've twice gone to comedy gigs by myself this year - I didn't give it a second thought. I was almost going to see Nick Helm by myself at the end of the month (and that's a small theatre) but now a friend is coming with me. You'll have a blast. I never let going alone be a reason to stop me enjoying an evening out.

LieutenantJumboJr · 13/11/2025 20:46

LadyKenya · 13/11/2025 19:21

I have not voted, but I do think that the OP is being unreasonable, because if they are able to go out, and eat alone in a restaurant, then going to the theatre, where you sit in the dark, should be easy, imo.

Yes I meant to say YANBU in my post, the edit button was gone when I noticed

martha79 · 13/11/2025 19:38

Absolutely do it! Going alone is a much better experience than taking someone just for company, especially if it's not really their thing and you end up worrying about whether they're enjoying it.
