Dad/Mum

I have just realised that I am so tired of hearing fathers described as 'dads' or mothers as 'mums'. I was discouraged from calling my parents mum and dad and called them Mummy and Daddy until D and M took over. I have never referred to either of them to other people except as 'my father', 'my mother' or 'my parents'. I really hate Mum and Dad.

No, it was always Mum and Dad in our family.

if I was talking about them to others I’d still refer to them as ‘my mum and dad’ but in a professional conversation might refer to them as ‘my parents’ or my mother/father.

Notlongphew · 15/11/2025 23:54

My adult children call me Mummy when speaking to me or signing a card ,but refer to me as Mum .I did the same with my darling Mum and Dad .
All families are different.

And your point is …. 🥱

Newname71 · 15/11/2025 19:52

Well you do you..
And we'll all carry as we see fit..

Give it a few years and they’ll be saying much worse behind your back, no idea why you are so triggered.

I used to work with a woman who called her parents mummy and daddy. It sounded ridiculous.

yes it gives spinster in their 50s+ still living at home vibes

Live and let live

Is that what you call your parents? Which is which? 😂

No half English/half French - not sure if that categorises me!!!

Surely it should have been maman and father or mother and papa then.

Alllllll wrong.

Ddakji · 15/11/2025 19:21

I never called my parents mum and dad - I’m going to sound fairly ludicrous but they were Mummy and Daddy, then Ma and Pa, and then Mother and Father, which was less formal than it sounds as it started as a joke and stuck. By the time my mum died she was interchangeably Ma and Mother.

I don’t know how but DD morphed into calling us Mum and Dad when she was late primary school, and it really doesn’t bother me in the slightest though I always thought it would. She’s our baby even though she’s nearly 16 and whatever she calls me brings me joy, I really don’t care.

CraftyGin · 15/11/2025 19:16

It's up to what your parents want to be called.

breezyyy · 15/11/2025 19:15

One of my adult children called me mate once, I thought it was quite sweet.

You’re missing a trick OP. I refer to my parents by their first names only. Anything else implies a level of emotion I’m not prepared to indulge in.

😁

Are you northern Irish? I find this is quite common there and have a few friends from portrush who used mummy & daddy

I always find it weird when adults use mummy and daddy. It’s just what you get used to I suppose.

Thank you - I still called my mother 'Mummy' until she died - I was 52. I don't care what other people think - that is how I was brought up and I despise 'Mum and Dad'.

My son called me lad! I would much prefer mum

My daughters have always called DH and me "Daddy" and "Mummy".
It does mean I'm never likely to get taken in by spam saying "Hi Mum, I've run out of money..."
I called my parents "Mummy and Daddy" and DH segued from "Mummy and Daddy" to "Mother and Father" at some random age.
I don't judge people who say "Mum and Dad" and I don't care if inverted snobs judge me or DH.
If someone I don't know wants to describe my relationship to my daughters I'd prefer "mother". Anything else is like using a personal name - only children of the person should use "Mummy/Mum" or "Daddy/Dad".

we need the laughing emoji back just for that

I might be missing your point but my 2 year old started calling me mum instead of mummy around 3 months ago and hasn’t stopped. I hate it. She still calls my husband daddy which seems unfair! I wouldn’t refer to my parents as my father or mother to others as it would sound a bit formal. I’d say my mum and my dad.

This would have me in tears

QuickPeachPoet · 13/11/2025 10:22

I literally loath 'Mummy and Daddy'. Unless you are Irish (Mammy). Then I find it quite endearing.
We are Mum/Dad all the way.
