A lot of people here don't appreciate the value in what they have, and it would be beyond foolish to let this institution be decimated.

When I say here, I don't mean on MN, but in general in the UK

The way that the licensing is managed is an absolute disgrace.

My mum bought a house days before lockdown and as a result never moved. She must have had two hundred threatening letters to the empty house.

They knew she was watching tv there, they had seen a tv there, they could detect that there was someone watching tv, they were coming on this date, the bailiffs were coming on that date etc.

And yes, she did fill the form in on the website to say she wasn’t watching tv at the property. She was watching TV two hundred miles away.

This view gets aired a lot but just because both sides complain it doesn’t mean the truth lies directly in the middle, aka the golden mean fallacy.

There is substantial documented evidence against the BBC now and it merits careful evaluation.

I don't wanna kill it, I wanna save it. So our agendas are no doubt wildly incompatible.

WestwardHo1 · 11/11/2025 14:14

They are under attack from every side. Every time I look at my phone there's something about viewers "slamming" the BBC because of something they didn't like on Strictly or similar. And the Murdoch press clearly wants them gone.

They should have made every effort not to add fuel to the fire.

WestwardHo1 · 11/11/2025 14:12

I am absolutely furious with them. They were sailing close to the wind for a while, but they just might have signed their own death warrant. It seemed pretty evident already that Trump was intent on causing trouble - it didn't need the BBC to hammer the point home with a made up news segment.

And the disparity in the treatment of the BBC Arabic reporters (nothing has happened to them) and Martine Croxall for her incredibly slight eye roll is breath-taking.

Yes we will miss it when it's gone. You only have to look at the state of news reporting in the USA to see that.

littleburn · 11/11/2025 14:10

I value the radio output. Radio 4 Today show is my go to for news and Radio 6 for music. The news app is absolutely terrible and seriously undermines the BBC’s reputation (or what remains of it) for serious journalism. Frequent typos and Tik-Tok level dumbed down content on the front page. IPlayer should be the jewel in its crown given the decades of high quality programmes they have, but theres’s nothing bloody on it!

OhDear111 · 11/11/2025 14:06

We should continue to have a national broadcaster. We cannot always opt out of what we don’t like. I still seem to pay taxes for the nhs. Can I access it when I need to? No. Can I opt out, no. Ditto paying for schools I didn’t use and street lighting I don’t have. I contribute for others. It’s what we tend to accept is the best way forward. Not stomping around saying the bbc should go because of a few errors in checking programmes. Other broadcasters probably do the same but the knives aren’t out for them. Although itv is being sold. To Sky. There won’t be much choice eventually.

Like the NHS, it has massive flaws, but we'd be idiots to let it die.
The right think it's biased to the left, the left think it's biased to the right, so it's probably spot on.
It actually is envied by many abroad, and what it provides is a treasure we are in danger of throwing away.

Jugjug · 11/11/2025 14:04

what values? The trump news shows how dishonest they are, they have been doing similar things to that for years misleading people. The trump thing is just one drop in an ocean.
Im 25 and have never had a tv licence and I’ve had my own place since 18, they cannot come in your home without a warrant, the people they take to court are obviously older/vulnerable people who don’t realise that and think they have to let them.

Interestingly I once saw someone on this site say bbc is upper class and itv is lower class and multiple people were agreeing ? Which is something I’d never heard before is that what you mean?

EasternStandard · 11/11/2025 14:04

MrsZiggywinkle · 11/11/2025 14:01

Totally agree, there is much more to the BBC than just BBC 1 and 2.

Nothing would replace it. There’s nothing that compares at the moment.

That’s good then surely for people to pay as a subscription, ie by choice.

This. If you’re pissing everyone off, you’re probably getting it about right.

I would miss Radio 3 and Radio 4.

I do not have a TV licence so wouldn't miss any television programmes. I already never see them.

Fake news! German license fee payer here. Quality of what is on offer is dire compared to the BBC too.

Sorry Germans! Time for you to rise up as well 😊

OhDear111 · 11/11/2025 13:50

But in the overall context of broadcasting output by the bbc these are picking out incidents and making them bring down the whole organisation. That is what is wrong with your argument. It’s clearly not every day occurrences that are wrong. It’s perception and hyperbole that your views are the only right views. Why should the rest of us have to surfer the consequences of your anger?

The bbc is not the mirror image of Fox News! That comment in itself means you are way off the mark in any critique you make. It’s close to being laughable.

Why should the rest of us have to surfer the consequences of your anger?

We don't have the choice of not funding the BBC, if we want to watch any live TV anywhere, on any channel. That is why our anger should count.

You don't want out opinion to be heard? Let us opt out of paying for the BBC.

Brefugee · 11/11/2025 13:54

yep, we pay a licence fee over here in Germany. And bloody hell, German TV is dire (no matter how often Annette Dittert is on)

Frikadelle · 11/11/2025 13:54

Misla · 11/11/2025 12:35

I am so tired of the "You'll miss it when it's gone!" argument.

a) We don't have the choice as to whether to fund the BBC or not. If we, as individuals, don't pay for the BBC - we get prosecuted.

b) Other countries seem to cope. France? Germany? Canada? They all seem to cope without a state broadcaster that they are compelled to fund individually.

c) If you are setting yourself up as an impartial, authoritative source - you'd better act as one. Which means you cannot allow your organisation to be so biased that you can't even see it.

I’m sorry,, you’re just making statements without evidence. No wonder you love the BBC.

Those incidents, in some cases, covering decades are symbolic of the ethos of the BBC. I don’t want to watch anything made by people who cover up child rape

How far right do you have to be to think that the BBC is left wing?

What do you think it is, right wing?

MrsSkylerWhite · 11/11/2025 13:52

Pretty sure that many people advocating for the break up of the BBC would be very happy if we all relied upon GB News.

Brefugee · 11/11/2025 13:52

MrsSkylerWhite · 11/11/2025 13:51

HoskinsChoice · 11/11/2025 12:39

It would be a huge loss if the idiots keep trying to break it. Apart from the TV, the radio and news website are second to none. Then throw in the charity drives they do - children in need, comic relief, sports relief etc. It's hugely important. You can always tell when something is good quality and popular because the media, the stupid and those with massive chips on their shoulders will try to bring it down.

Love BBC radio, tv news/News ight, Question Time, etc. Children’s programming is excellent too.

Misla · 11/11/2025 13:48

Raquelos · 11/11/2025 13:42

It actually isn't a shit show at all, for comparison:

New York Times 2023 c.3 000 digital corrections
Guardian 2023 c.1 200 corrections

Within the news industry
0.5–2 % correction rate of total output is viewed as standard for mainstream newsrooms.
Higher than 2 % signals deeper workflow issues (e.g., under-resourced fact-checking).
Less than 0.5 % indicates a likely under-reporting of mistakes.

On that scale, BBC Arabic’s c.1 % sits in the middle of the normal range

I'm not saying it's okay, particularly given how contentious the area it covers can be, but actually, the level of corrections is broadly in line with comparable news outlets.

How are you working out that "1%"?
How do you know what BBC Arabic output total for the date rage was?
