DSis is skimping on Christmas because she’s obsessed with her Skye trip?

DSis has announced on the family chat that she’s doing a smaller Christmas this year so she and BIL can save for their big Isle of Skye holiday next summer.
Fine in theory, except last year she happily accepted the tasteful and expensive pile of gifts I bought for them both, and now I am apparently only getting a little token.

DM has already chimed in with something about memories meaning more than materialistic things which pissed me off.

AIBU to think she can save for her holiday without cheaping out on me and the rest of the family?????

Another thread like this?

Perhaps she was embarrassed by your generosity last year and doesn't want to be caught out again? Do presents really matter that much? I'm grateful if someone sees something and things of me, no matter how much it costs.

It always surprises me how materialistic adults can be.

Jesus christ. Two years ago just before Christmas we buried our beautiful twin babies who died the week they were born. If this is your biggest problem to be getting odd with your sister over, think yourself lucky. There's so many families facing real problems today and at christmas . This is riddiculous. I wonder are you trying to be funny, but its really not

So sorry to hear this.

Its very disappointing when people dont show generosity around gifts. I get it. Buying a gift shows you have gone to some effort to get something. Ive never fallen for the ' its the thought that counts ' bullshit. My cousin and her tight arsed partner came to visit our family one time for a big family gathering eeekend. . They ate all the food on offer ( my mums a great cook ) , held back when we went out so that we ended up paying, and turned up unexpectedly to a lunch that was only supposed to be for the people we were seeing on that particular day. And what did we get in return. A loaf of bread when they arrived which my cousins partner had baked myself'. Well whoopy doo. I hate cheapskates. Just dont bother with the selfish bullshitters.

Just buy her a hat with a midgie net attached then.

If she queries it you can say that you too were thinking of Skye .

In all seriousness, they are bloody brilliant.

Snorlaxo · 10/11/2025 16:16

Is this a reverse?

Just spend less on your sister’s family 🤷‍♀️ and use the money saved to buy what you and your family would like.

This. It's so obvious I don't know why they OP is even asking.

Okiedokie123 · 10/11/2025 19:52

Did she buy you nice stuff last year or just you her?
Have you bought stuff for her already? Just take it back?
It’s only early November, tbh I haven’t bought anything yet.
They are right though -memories are better than yet more tat/packaging/unwanted stuff.

No other posts are needed after reading this. Hopefully this puts it into context for you. Hopefully you'll start to rearrange priorities in your head a little.

Sending thoughts to Ella31 ❤️❤️

Giving isn’t about receiving. You can match her budget if that’s something you care about.

Pigeonpoodle · 10/11/2025 19:26

And besides, how could she do other than “happily accept your tasteful and expensive gifts”…. she’s hardly going to throw them back in your face. You’re being ridiculous!

Pigeonpoodle · 10/11/2025 19:21

Are you sure your presents were tasteful? Because you’re coming across very tasteless.

RisingSunn · 10/11/2025 19:19

What has last year got to do with this year?
She's letting you know not to splurge on her this year. You sound very entitled - Christmas is not supposed to be some sort of business transaction.

SparklyCardigan · 10/11/2025 19:02

Thank you! I thought it was just me. How expensive can a trip to Skye be, it's surely just petrol, maybe a ferry depending on your route, a week in an Air BnB (boo hiss!) and spending money?!

Depends when she's travelling. A week in a decent Air BnB in the summer will be ££££s

ViaRia01 · 10/11/2025 19:11

What is going on here? Are you the earlier “cutla quid” OP?

Tuesdayschild50 · 10/11/2025 19:11

I'd be happy to let christmas go full stop and spend all my money on a fantastic holiday... christmas is a load of overpriced shit.
It's for the kids .

UnhappyHobbit · 10/11/2025 18:51

Something similar happened with my DSil. She’s more than happy to encourage presents and expensive lists over for her DCs when they were little but when mine came along, nothing was reciprocated.

You’ll get a lot of yours being unreasonable responses (I expect from similar characters to your DSil) but really it’s them that are grabby for being so tight!

It's not the same situation at all. Someone happy to receive gifts for their kids not reciprocating when you have kids is unkind and makes you feel they don't care for your kids.

The OPs sister has said almost 2 months before Christmas that she would like to spend less this year - presumably she has shared this so that others can respond in kind and spend less on her also.

Well, she's explicitly told she canmot do both, save for this and buy expensive piles of presents. She sounds sensible and honest to me. Sensible mum too. YABVH. Expensive piles of presents can make people feel v uncomfortable.

SparklyCardigan · 10/11/2025 19:02

Mochudubh · 10/11/2025 17:34

Yes, I'm struggling with the idea of "big Isle of Skye holiday" it's hardly Vegas.

(I'm biased because some of the most miserable hours/days of my life have been spent on Skye).

Thank you! I thought it was just me. How expensive can a trip to Skye be, it's surely just petrol, maybe a ferry depending on your route, a week in an Air BnB (boo hiss!) and spending money?!

SleepingStandingUp · 10/11/2025 18:59

Well surely the reciprocity for last year's presents was last year? And you don't give to recievr.

Just agree a budget with her and stick to it.

outerspacepotato · 10/11/2025 18:56

LydiaRidesAgain · 10/11/2025 16:37

I’m not keeping score, I’m simply pointing out that DSis set a precedent. If she wants to renegotiate the terms of the Christmas gifts, that’s fine, but I’m going to need notice, not just one month!

It's a holiday, not a legal contract.

No precedent matters. You can't bring her to Holiday Claims Court.

She doesn't have to negotiate anything with you. You're not the Holiday Claims Court Judge and Jury.

She gave you nearly 2 months notice that she's prioritizing other things than holiday gifts this year.

Save it for The Airing of the Grievances.

Sunshin80 · 10/11/2025 18:49

Have you heard yourself. So you only give to get back? You sound quite grabby. More fool you for spending what you did. Why has everything got to about the amount at christmas. Have a word with yourself!

SlothMama14 · 10/11/2025 18:45

This must be the same poster as Centre Parcs. I wonder which relative/friend will be withholding presents next in lieu of a holiday? Grandpa doesn't want to buy anything because he's saving for a Saga cruise to the Bahamas? Auntie Beryl won't cough up because she's going on a singles trip to the Canary Islands?

We should take bets!

Lolapusht · 10/11/2025 18:44

OP, YADNBU.

As we all know, Christmas is about how much people spend on the presents they give to us.

Ho, ho, ho!

😂

FaceDownInAPuddle · 10/11/2025 18:40

Graspy, graspy grasp.....you're an adult. Buy gifts for the joy of giving, keeping to a budget of your choice. FFS, what kind of selfish person gives gifts in accordance to the value of what they may receive. Why bother at all if this is your attitude.
