Struggling so much with the endless grey dark weather

Tipsandtricks22 · 10/11/2025 15:00

Its making me miserable. Its not uncommon for me to feel like this in the winter and at the beginning I really tried to be more positive about it and prevent it getting to me but today, the house is literally dark because its just completely grey and horrible and overcast outside. In a way I'd prefer if it was pelting down with rain, at least I like the sound of rain. I get that I live in England but as I'm unable to move to the Canary islands, how to I stop it making me feel so depressed?

what strength Vit D are you all taking? Is 4000 per day too much?

You need to check if other things have vitamin d in as it is not good to take too much.
I take a daily vitamin d but also take an iron supplement which I’ve only just realised also has 100% RDA iron in it.

It was really sunny here in North Yorkshire most of the morning and my flowers are still blooming. I don't think the daytime temperatures have dropped into single figures yet.

I think you are exaggerating a little unless you live in the Shetland Islands or something.

I agree,we've had a beautiful autumn most places on the UK and a glorious spring/summer.

Snippit · 11/11/2025 00:07

I taught myself to crochet via YouTube during the lockdown. I too desperately hate the grim grey days. But I have found that by crocheting it distracts me and I don’t notice the weather so much. I mainly crochet in the winter as I can get out into the garden during the summer.

I’m currently making Xmas decorations and throws, it’s so therapeutic, good for the soul. My husband tells me I need to find victims for my creations, cheeky sod. Last year I made the same throw 7 times, it was pretty popular. I don’t charge, I do it for my sanity and enjoy treating people 🤗

So because it’s sunny where you are the ops exaggerating?
Im 350 miles away from the Shetland Isles and yesterday and today it has been grey, misty and damp. Bloody awful.
Yes it’s been mild but the op isn’t complaining about that.

If you read what I wrote, it wasn't negative and I gave you some genuine, actionable advice. I was commenting on the way these discussions go, and was making a general comment as you hadn't come back to the thread. I am glad you feel a little better now.

Edited

@deplorabelle, I agree what you wrote wasn’t negative at all!

I have house plants in every room, which I am adoring right now. The green is very calming.

I consciously make an effort to appreciate the seasons.

My DH, whatever the season turns the lights on in the house because dusk is my favourite time of day and left to me they would never go on.

I love winter!

Today we had such heavy rainfall. SE of England. I love it, I find it invigorating.

Tomorrow, I will plant bulbs, crocus, tulips and daffodils, and live winter, until the spring bulbs start to shoot.

Although, because it has been quite mild, I did see some daffodil shoots, I am afraid!

Hunker down!

Melonjuice · 10/11/2025 21:15

I’ve started to wear bright yellows and pinks ! It makes you feel better !

Allthings · 10/11/2025 21:14

It’s been very grey and damp here with a fair bit of wind thrown in for good measure. We have not had much sunshine at all. It’s however not been that cold. It’s the lack of light which is the biggest issue for those with SAD and wet weather doesn’t help either as it can prevent people from getting outside and catching what little light there is.

Rain, wind, cold, damp

Not where I live either!! Negative Nelly

Gloriia · 10/11/2025 20:24

It's actually been quite mild and sunny here.

Just get out in it, brisk walks then coffee and cake out. Fairy lights and candles at home. Embrace the cosiness.

Coffee and cake I will live with!!!!

Rain, wind, cold, damp

It barely rained between March and September in our area of the UK this year. As much as I enjoy the sunny weather, totally ready for a break from it. Working an office job in the hot weather, still having to do all the day to day things which never stop no matter what the weather is (school runs, housework, cooking, on top of work) in sticky hot weather is no fun. Yes lying by a pool in the sun is great but not most people’s day to day life. Most people I know enjoy the change of seasons.

We live in a popular area for tourists and the Autumn/Winter is definately embraced by the locals.

Rain, wind, cold, damp

Oh right. Not in my experience. The weather has been mostly really good where I am (South West) this year. It might be turning colder but that's kind of what you expect in winter

Greenwriter76 · 10/11/2025 20:26

Definitely get out for exercise during the day.
I currently do the school run twice day which means a 20 min walk at 8am and 20 min walk at 3pm - & unless it’s torrential rain we always walk.
Pre-child days, when I worked full time, I would still go out for runs before work at 6am in pitch black, or a lunchtime walk.
I don’t suffer from SAD, but of course enjoy a bit of sunshine over constant grey skies - but I honestly believe if you can get out for exercise and fresh air during the day you will find it less noticeable.

Who said I was staying? I didn't. I am leaving early next year.

A lot of my friends have moved abroad too. The U.K is not a good place to live.

If you say so. But nowhere is perfect and many places worse than UK

Horrible in what way?

Rain, wind, cold, damp

21ZIGGY · 10/11/2025 20:16

Give it six months

I think that the U.K is one of the worst countries in Europe to live in.

Horrible weather for six months of the year -is just one of the reasons.

Horrible in what way?

Finto1111 · 10/11/2025 19:40

Yes I said the weather is only one of many reasons why I think the UK is worse.

For example, Poland gets very cold in Winter. However, every time I visit Poland I have a great time because the people are so friendly and kind.

A lot of peoplr are not friendly and kind in the UK. The UK is not a culture that has a lot of kindness I find.

So the UK has shit weather, and also a lot of cold and unfriendly people in it

Wow. Why stay then?

ChopstickNovice · 10/11/2025 19:57

I too hate this weather, but have tried to embrace it with:

Blankets
Nicely scented candles
Crumpets toasted with butter
Interesting books

It's not so bad. Lean into it and go out once a day.

I’ve read a few books on wintering, hygge and sacred seasons by Kirsty Gallagher. This has transformed how I approach winter to the point I’m looking forward to it. I decorate the house from season to season and change my activities accordingly.
I plan to do lots of snuggling down, reading, journaling on what I hope to start in spring, cross stitch, fire on, twinkly lights, candles, hot food, long dog walks looking at nature wintering and spotting the first signs of spring. As humans we are meant to slow down at this time which can be uncomfortable for some but if you can, it makes it so much easier rather than wishing for sunny days. If it is uncomfortable, maybe try to work through a few things.
For the last few weeks of autumn I’m also going to sort a few bits around the house to get ready for my hibernation after Christmas.

I don’t believe humans were designed to slow down in winter! There was no snuggling down even in my grandparents time. You’ve always had to work even harder in winter.

Its been fairly pleasant as November goes here, sure gets dark early but means nights are cosy.

Appreciate i might be a dinosaur but think people with SAD need to grow up a bit.

It is a recognised mental health condition, and some people are affected to a very serious degree. I think people who lack empathy might be the ones needing to grow up a bit.

Most of northern Europe is horrible for 6 months of the year. I went to Denmark at the beginning of September last year and it pissed it down during what was a beautiful sunny weekend in the UK. I lived in Lyon, France for 6 months over winter and have never been so cold in my life.

Yes I said the weather is only one of many reasons why I think the UK is worse.

Also @Tipsandtricks22 I don;t know how old you are, and whether you are having other symptoms, but I am coping so much better now I'm on HRT.
