Which do you think is more likely to be biased: a) multiple different official sources of data, which have been gathered and compiled in the same way for years, under different governments, or b) people's gut feelings based on what they are seeing in newspapers or TV or social media, all of which now feed people streams of stories based on either algorithms determined by what they have previously clicked on, or based on the political leanings of their owners and editors?

All governments benefit from reporting low crime statistics.

I don't know whether they are true or not but I don't like how some people just take them as gospel and are willing to dismiss the feelings and fears of real people affected by knife crime around them.

A completely unprovoked attack suggests another unmedicated mentally ill man on the loose.

How do we know that the stats are true?

And what they refuse to understand is, stats for knife crime fall when nobody arrests the criminals or follows upon the crime.

Stats only show the crimes the police actually investigated and decided were worthy of prosecution. While knife crime and violent crime has risen, police investigating and arresting those criminals has fallen.

Edited

No, the stats people are talking about are also based on hospital data, and on the national crime survey, which also asks people about crimes not reported to the police. Knife Crime Statistics | The Ben Kinsella Trust https://share.google/PooIqV85WRsYY0zwa

People will soon be along to say knife crime has fallen. I agree something needs to be done about it.

Oh, I think Reform want everyone to know how their Chair in Wales has been convicted of taking Russian bribes. Some people have described it as akin to being a foreign agent.
They also want everyone to listen to Carol Cadwaladr’s podcast about Russian finance for areas of UK politics inc Brexit.
But as usual the media won’t publish any of this on Reform’s behalf, so thank goodness for threads like these.

Thank you for trying. Βut after the first few words I lost the will to read any more about reform.

But knife crime, which is what this thread is about, is down.

Nationally - but those of who who live in high crime areas still see and hear of this daily. I don’t want to say where I live but in the last month there have been stabbings near me and shootings in my area - but you can probably guess my district from just that. To us statistics mean nothing when we actually see it.

Not in London it doesn’t appear to be.

I’m saying it doesn’t matter who was the party in charge ie Tory or Labour when London figures are up.Surely the fact figures are up is the most important point.

Reform aren't in charge now.
People are commenting on knife crime, although there is a bit of “who’s to blame “ politics wise.
Im not sure why people keep thinking Reform etc are anything to do with knife crime, and more relevantly why people think the posters concerned about knife crime are Reform bots.

Rexinasaurus · 08/11/2025 19:54

Interesting! I don’t pay any attention to reform at all. Clearly you do - what are the ‘reform talking points’? And which ones are being ‘trotted out’ here?

And you don't think that might have had something to do with rising crime numbers?

Alongside 14 years of underfunding of the Met Police

What makes you think that?

Neither does detail to you, clearly. Used to it with posters on MN.

I don’t know but my local London one was closed, my answer is too many. I lived in London under Ken, Boris and Sadiq. Ken was by far the best one. But simpler times.

“National emergency” is the sort of thing Trump does to give himself extra power.

Knife crime has soared by 86 per cent in London in a decade, a report has revealed.
The number of offences surged by 58 per cent in just the three years between 2021 and 2024.

Labour Mayor has been in charge of London since 2016

Thank goodness there are threads like these to trot out the Reform talking points. After all Farage, Tice and Co are too busy doing their multimillion pound talking gigs for UK media (or their constituents) to see them. Phew.

Interesting! I don’t pay any attention to reform at all. Clearly you do - what are the ‘reform talking points’? And which ones are being ‘trotted out’ here?

frozendaisy · 08/11/2025 19:54

So @Netcurtainnelly if a national emergency was called, and the authorities knocked on your door this evening and said you have to get out, move, now, would you be ok with that?

Because that is what national emergency means.
And yes it might not be your house.
But it could be
Or it could be someone else's innocent house that lives near a big bus station

But say it was your house they knocked on @Netcurtainnelly this evening and said "sorry miss it's a national emergency you need to vacate these premises now"

Would you be ok with that?

Apart from London where it’s actually risen.

Actually, check your facts it’s dropped by 19% from last year
