She's dying isn't she?

Mum discharged herself from hospital today.

Hiatus hernia. She can't eat or drink anything. Literally throws it straight back up.

Can't walk because her lower back is buggered.

UTI in blood. Been given antibiotics but nothing seems to be giving her a boost.

Sat in a sodding chair for 36 hours at A&E. Not slept for at least 48. Said she just wanted to go home.

I'm really scared 😭

MNHQ EDIT to gently suggest that MNers new to this thread take the time to read through all of the OP's posts before answering

I have also been following and am very sorry to hear the update - although suspected that would be the case when you mentioned the shadow on the scan. You’ve had a terrible shock and may still have some emotional ups and downs to come. As another poster has said, you’ve done a lot to advocate for her. Sadly too many people get cancer diagnoses via an emergency presentation to A&E. It is often a shocking way to digest and take in the news as people often are expecting treatment for something else and it just hits so hard. I hope you can get some support from this thread and in real life.

anyolddinosaur · 19/11/2025 19:34

I'm sorry. It wont be any consolation but the poor care will not have made any significant difference. At least now she will be out of pain.

Allschoolsareartschools · 19/11/2025 19:33

So very sorry. Wishing you strength in the days to come.

Siddalee · 19/11/2025 19:31

I’m so sorry. Like others, I’ve been following since you first posted and have been refreshing for an update whilst hoping for positive news.

You should be proud of the way you’ve advocated for your mum- without you she’d still be in pain and being humiliated by her circumstances. My mum passed due to a liver problem - 6 months from diagnosis to death. I had to advocate really strongly at the end and my complaint included the words ‘your denying my mother a dignified death’ Hopefully, whilst you’re in hospital it won’t come to that. My only consolation is that because we knew the end was near, there was nothing left unsaid and my mum knew how very loved she was.

I know the words “I’m thinking of you” can be used too often to hold any significance. But please know, there’s a whole army of women out here holding you and your mum in our hearts.
Take care. And please, if there’s anything us army of strangers (but supporters) can do for you - just say

NewAgeNewMe · 19/11/2025 19:30

I’m so sorry to read this update. Been there with my dad. Remember to look after yourself as well. Once palliative were involved it was much easier for my dad to be pain free. X

Dery · 19/11/2025 19:28

OP - i’m so sorry to hear that. At the outset, there didn’t really seem to be any basis for your supposition that your mother was dying but your instinct was correct. It’s very hard to face losing a parent and this does seem to have been very sudden. Hopefully there are people who can be with you IRL. It’s about the small comforts now - you are with your mum and she is probably as comfortable as she could possibly be in the circumstances.

noctilucentcloud · 19/11/2025 19:15

I'm so sorry OP, I hope she's comfortable and you've got some family/friends to support you both.

MrsLizzieDarcy · 19/11/2025 19:14

Oh OP, that's the worst news, you must be reeling. Look after yourself and wishing your Mum a peaceful journey Flowers

SexRealistic · 19/11/2025 19:10

@McSteamyorMcdreamy

So sorry for your Mum’s situation. It’s so hard but you can be there for her and love her with all you’ve got.

You were right OP. I'm so sorry that turned out to be the case and that your mum has had to go through so much.

McSteamyorMcdreamy · 19/11/2025 18:28

CT confirmed secondary liver cancer. Primary is in her bones.

All treatment stopped, morphine and now under palliative in private room.

No words.

Oh how heartbreaking.

I'm very sorry to see this update.

It's especially awful because of the way your mother has been treated by the NHS over the last few days. Left to sit in A & E on a chair for many hours.
Paramedics refusing to take her to hospital despite its being ordered by the GP.
Left to wet the bed countless times.

It's all utterly ghastly.

SoftBalletShoes · 19/11/2025 18:57

Oh, OP! I am so, so sorry. Both my parents had long and fatal cancer journeys, so I get how fucking horrific it is. I hope she doesn't suffer for too long. It's terrible for relatives if the person goes quickly, but it's a blessed relief for the ill person.

The sheer shock of the diagnosis is indescribable, I know. My dad was terminal from the outset, too.

You haven't said how conscious she is, but when my dad was in hospital at the terminal stage, I would get a salad or something from the hospital shop and Dad and I would eat dinner together. And then we'd share a tube of Smarties or something and watch one of his fave programmes on his tablet. I ordered a thing from Amazon to prop it up on. He still wanted TV and chocolate at that stage. I also wiped his face with wipes, put lotion on it, and combed his hair. And I made him cups of tea, of course. There are lots of ways you can still make a difference to her.

At the end, the latest research says that people can hear pretty much up to the time they pass, so DO hold her hand, and speak to her. Speak clearly up close to her ear.

My heart goes out to you.

toastandegg · 19/11/2025 18:56

Flinderskleepers · 19/11/2025 18:39

I'm so sorry to hear that. It's shit. I've been there with my Dad. The only thing I can say is you will get through this because you have to, there's no alternative. Take each day as it comes. Look after yourself OP x

FizzPlease · 19/11/2025 18:39

I am so sorry you are enduring this and your poor Mum. It is agonising. Once palliative care kicks in, the suffering ends and it will be a comfort these coming days to know you ensured your lovely Mum is out of pain.

Your Mum has been treated appallingly and I am sorry you have had to battle your way to here. It is criminal negligence and will compound your grief, I am sure.

user90276865197 · 19/11/2025 18:38

Gosh, I’m sorry to read your update OP. Wishing you all strength. X
