To ask how the hell I can get out of this hen do?

...without disclosing my pregnancy early! I have been added to the hen do whatsapp of nightmares! Weekend in Marbella, deposit needed by Sunday and lots of passive aggressive messages about saying sooner rather than later if you can't come because it will make it more expensive for others. I am friends with the bride only as I'm her work friend and my due date is on the date smack bang in the middle of the weekend for her hen. I know missing it because I'm pregnant is totally fair enough but I don't know how to tell the chat, without telling the bride and this will cause me stress at work. I'm really not ready to tell everyone at work yet and wanted to wait until I'm further along... what would you all do? Make something up ( in which case the bride will probably be offended that I'm not coming as she isn't in the chat but will bring up her hen at work ), or tell a group of slightly aggy strangers before I even tell family? It feels wrong! Thanks in advance for any replies, I will be watching responses like a hawk!

Just say you can’t make it because of a pre-existing family commitment.

Being pregnant is completely irrelevant. You don't want to go so just say you can't make it. Hen dos are neve compulsory. Even less so when abroad.

Being pregnant is totally relevant. The hen weekend clashes with the OP's due date, and that is the number one reason she can't go.

“Sorry girlies, I’m going to have to bow out of this one! Can’t wait to meet you all at the wedding!” Leave the group chat and if your bride friend asks, well it was a little pricey for you and you have a prior engagement that weekend anyway don’t you? (You are growing a whole human so none of this is a lie!)

I would just say sadly you can’t make it - if anyone is sniffy they will know I’m sure soon why it’s not doable

Wolfiefan · 07/11/2025 20:19

Reallly sorry I can’t make it. Hope you all have a wonderful time.
Leave group chat.

Exactly this
Don’t give it another thought and congratulations on your pregnancy x

ChilledBeez · 07/11/2025 22:25

Just the idea of going to Marbella for a hen do would fill me with enough dread that I would come up with a thousand reasons I could NOT attend. Good luck!

GoldenGail · 07/11/2025 22:22

I wouldn’t tell a lie but would say thats the date of a big family birthday…..it is..your baby ! and you can reveal that when it suits you

MaryBeardsShoes · 07/11/2025 22:16

Christs sake just say “sorry I can’t make it” and leave it at that. You are going to have a child, you need to buck up!

IndiaAutumn · 07/11/2025 22:15

“Sorry I can’t make it. Hope you have a great time.”

There’s no need at all to make up a lie. For the MOH all she wants to know are numbers and as quickly as possible.

Heidi2018 · 07/11/2025 22:15

I just find it a bit rude to say "sorry I can't go" without giving a reason, however that could be the Irish in me where we are brought up in communities that know everything about each other 😅

NimbleDreamer · 07/11/2025 22:14

I must be really good at lying. I would just say "sorry I can't make it I've got a holiday booked on those dates" and not worry about it again.

once1caughtafishalive · 07/11/2025 22:14

"Sorry im on holiday then. Enjoy!". Exit chat. Done

Why do so many people find it difficult to say no?

Yep. I can’t believe the number of people who stress themselves out thinking of implausible fairy stories rather than just say ‘no thanks’

DierdreDaphne · 07/11/2025 22:12

@Hohofortherobbers is even better actually!!

DierdreDaphne · 07/11/2025 22:12

"DH and I have booked something special for that weekend that we've been planning for for ages and it can't be moved ❤️"

TwistedWonder · 07/11/2025 22:11

Honestly I don’t understand why people get so dramatic about saying ‘sorry I won’t be able to come, hope you all have a great time’

Its so easy to be honest rather than overthink and make up a lie.

The MOH said she needs to know sooner rather than later so tell her now don’t drag it out.

Its a workmate not a lifelong best friend.

Hohofortherobbers · 07/11/2025 22:05

'Sorry I won't be able to come but I'll be at a big birthday that weekend that im already committed too'
Its the truth after all! 😁 congratulations 🎊

"Sorry I can't make it due to prior commitments. Hope you have a great time. I'm going to leave the group as I can't make it but looking forward to seeing you all at the wedding"

This, but be careful not to say it before the date has been named, as a friend of mine did 😂

DoYouReally · 07/11/2025 21:57

"Sorry I can't make it due to prior commitments. Hope you have a great time. I'm going to leave the group as I can't make it but looking forward to seeing you all at the wedding"

Saracen · 07/11/2025 21:54

"I'm having some medical issues and I don't think I could get travel insurance."

scienceteachersarefun · 07/11/2025 21:48

lizzielizard · 07/11/2025 21:28

You can't go because of a birthday of a close family member and you have to be there (being as you're the mother but they don't need to know that bit 😅) Completely truthful.

Brilliant! I love that.

KathyDuck · 07/11/2025 21:48

Can’t make it but you’ll all have to send me lots of photos. Have fun!

RazorsAtDawn · 07/11/2025 21:46

MangoBanjoe · 07/11/2025 20:24

Sorry, got a family wedding that weekend, have fun!

Come clean to your colleague later down the line and take her for lunch.

You aren’t lying, you do have family plans that weekend, you’re planning to have a baby that weekend. That’s a pretty family thing.
