Is your son called Tiny Tim?

WhatNoRaisins · 06/11/2025 10:37

Was 10 a typo? Did you mean 20?

I've seen some really cool ideas for more minimalist Christmas decorating. I think there's always compromise to be had if "going overboard" isn't the right approach for your household but you still want to get into the season.

MaplePumpkin · 06/11/2025 10:35

I’ve never thought of Christmas trees as being just for children. I lived with a friend through the first part of my 20s, alone for the second part, and with my boyfriend for the last few. Not a child in sight. And I have ALWAYS put a tree up. All my friends do. My mum and dad too. And my grandma. Until my baby was born august, I at age 36 am the youngest in my family, and it’s not stopped anyone putting a tree up!!

I do and my children are long married.

I like them

Oh that is sad.

If you don't want to go the full hog can you not just put up some fairy lights?

I can't wait to put up my decorations, I've had such a stressful year and the thought of coming down my road and seeing the twinkling lights outside my house brings me such joy.

In fact if I had my way I'd make it law that outside Xmas lights should stay up until at least end of February to bring some uplifting twinkle through those dreary winter nights!

2chocolateoranges · 06/11/2025 10:25

My mum will puts her tree up and she is 77. She says every year she isn’t putting one up and she puts it up.

I love the tree up in our house and my children are in their early 20s.

theressomanytinafeysicouldbe · 06/11/2025 10:22

You have a 10 yr old, i would still be putting up all the decs.

My youngest is 16 now and last year we opted for just the tree and a wreath on the door, none of the other stuff we have accumulated over the years.

Have had a particularly crap year this year so thinking about putting the outside lights up again (not hundreds, just the white flashy ones that go along the fascias), and maybe a few other bits inside, table centre piece, stuff like that, but buy new, and try and get into the spirit. It's harder to when they are all grown up.

Plus, we have to rearrange the whole front room just to get the tree in. Not a big space but its a living/dining room.

Lurker85 · 06/11/2025 10:21

This is really sad. Thinking that as soon as your child hits double digits they no longer deserve any Christmas magic 😥

HeyThereDelila · 06/11/2025 10:07

Most people decorate their houses or at least put up a tree even without children at home.

Your poor son is only 10! Are you honestly not going to put up a tree or decorations for him? How mean. He's still a little boy at 10.

Tdcp · 06/11/2025 10:05

My mum stopped decorating when I was 20 and my little brother was 10. It was very depressing.

Luckyingame · 06/11/2025 10:01

Well, your kid is ten?
I'd say use the decorations.

Christmas here - just myself and my husband (75), and a few decorations are still going up.

mumofoneAloneandwell · 06/11/2025 10:00

Omg yabu! Put them up!! 🎄

Oooobigstretch · 06/11/2025 10:00

I’m sorry but I can’t get past your username … did you intend it to be so offensive?

Sartre · 06/11/2025 09:58

How is a 10 year old grown up exactly? He’s not even close to being a teenager yet!

Allbymyself123 · 06/11/2025 09:58

10 is not grown up. Mine are 15 & 11 & have trees in their bedrooms that they are already talking about. My dad lived himself and never decorated. My grandad lived himself and did some
tinsel and a little fibre optic tree. My husband is the grinch and wouldn’t ever decorate even with kids but i still would even when the kids have moved out as i like christmas and the trees and lights etc. up to you but your child is 10 not 20!

SilverPink · 06/11/2025 09:54

My dad’s in his 90s, he still puts his tree up!

Office365Error · 06/11/2025 09:49

No kids here and we put up decs. It takes us a day. But I like Christmas. My mum still also puts up decs, just toned down a bit. Shegot the wall hanging tree for lwss faff and space saving.
It's cosy and warm. Unlike the outside. That is bit of the point. People used to bring in evergreens for midwinter festival to connect with nature

HairsprayBabe · 06/11/2025 09:48

Is this real? I put up decorations before I had children, my grandparents are in their 80s and still put a Christmas tree up...

Since when were Christmas decorations just for kids!?

Snugglemonkey · 06/11/2025 09:44

I think it is a real shame for your 10 year old if you don't make a bit of effort to make things feel festive. He is not a grown up, but even if he was, decorations are for everyone. Christmas is not just for children!

Pineapplewaves · 06/11/2025 09:35

Your 10 year old is a child and still at Primary School, you need to make an effort for him even you and your daughter aren’t bothered.

Gamerlady · 06/11/2025 09:31

You have a 10 year old that is a child, put the tree up ! Christmas is for everyone. Don't be the grinch.

Or is it because "YOU" don't want the tree up.

Lidlisthebusiness · 06/11/2025 09:28

Since when have Christmas decorations had an age limit imposed on them?! I will put Christmas decorations up forever more, regardless of how many people of whatever age are living in my house.

ObtuseMoose · 06/11/2025 09:11

Christmas decorations are just for little kids? Since when?

Ahwig · 06/11/2025 09:08

My son is 40 and grandson 20 and neither live with me but I put up my tree for me because I love it.

Cynic17 · 06/11/2025 09:01

We have no kids, so never put up decorations or a tree. It is just a lot of faff to make the house look cluttered (although, to be fair, I do like the smell of a Christmas tree).
If your kids are happy, then save yourself the hassle.
