‘Just the meat for me please’ Sunday Lunch issue ’

Mondaytuesdayhappydays · 05/11/2025 13:47

SIS and BIL coming for Sunday Lunch, bringing DN and her BF- recently engaged.
Got a little gift for them and card etc, my parents were coming any way so invited Sunday for food as makes sense.

SIS has just WhatsApped to say jokingly that the BF -mega gym bunny - ‘doesn’t do potatoes and trimmings- but don’t worry he’ll just pile his plate high with meat’
Im doing a couple chickens and a gammon between us all so plenty for everyone alongside stuffing, veg, Yorkies , gravey, cauliflower cheese etc but definitely not for a huge piled up plate of just meat!

I replied lightheartedly to SIS to this effect and she’s not a happy camper at all.
Just texted to say wants him to feel welcome so will bring him a couple of raw pork chops or similar to fry - I’ve said bring them cooked and sliced already in a Tupperware as I won’t be frying chops with all the carnage of the roast going on and my parents milling about under my feet ‘helping’

Shes voice noting at the moment can see the symbol
honestly am I just old or a shit hostess or is this how guests who barely know their hosts I might add expect to be catered for ???

I mean veggie/vegan all power to you
but a plate piled up of meat for lunch seems a bit full on to me ??

Really? I thought it’s fairly typical for a roast to be indulgent beyond just plain steamed veggies?

Nah, hate it when places and people do this! As a milk allergy sufferer, just leave my vegetables alone - hard enough to find something to eat as it is or already be thought of as fussy without slapping butter on everything including something as harmless as vegetables!

I dated a body builder 30 odd years ok ( was raw eggs in a blender back then and 20 steak mince patties cooked in butter.

After DTD he would jump straight up and measure his thighs and biceps 💪 as were ‘ pumped’ up and bigger
He asked me to take a Polaroid snap once, flexing- which was my limit
toe curling

😂😂😂

I'm with you on this. I eat to a protein goal as I do weight training so basically eat lean meat/fish and vegetables and dairy. Mainly whole foods with protein shakes if needed.

It's a simple way of eating and not inconvenient. It suits me very well in terms of satiation and energy levels.

The poor lad probably has no idea this fuss has been made. He'll probably estimate his protein from meat then top up later if needed at his next meal. Once you get the hang of it, guestimating weight and protein content isn't that hard.

I've known of many young lads eat an extra dinner (so 4 meals a day) simply because they are very active and have a high level of maintenance calories. DD's boyfriend will often cook chicken thighs or similar late on in the evening despite having eaten dinner as he gets so hungry. He goes to the gym but doesn't count his protein/macros.

I don't think this is orthorexia.

You might think it's 'a simple way of eating' but it sounds unhealthy to me. And it's very inconvenient for other people if he expects other people to cook an extra chicken or something because he's decided not to eat what's provided for everybody else.

I suppose it depends on the end goal and the whole diet. People into bodybuilding can be pretty obsessive about weighing their food and counting macros, and when you need X amount of protein but can only eat Y number of calories and fat, then there is not a lot of wiggle room for trimmings. It can be healthy if you follow a proper, whole-foods-based meal plan, but it doesn't sound like OP's future BIL is.

I haven't done bodybuilding for over 10 years, but I still follow the sport. Atm, I am doing body recomp, which is similar to, but not as extreme as, cutting. My macro targets are approx 150g protein, less than 100g of carbs, and as little fat as possible, with only "good" fats (nuts/seeds/oily fish).

Today's food was:

Whey protein shake with unsweetened soy milk, chia seeds, and a banana

Breakfast scramble for lunch (1 whole egg, 3 egg whites, 3oz lean ground turkey, 1 quarter red onion, and a decent handful of spinach)

200g chicken breast dry-fried in fresh, grated garlic, half a cauliflower, mashed with 30g of philly light and 2 roasted carrots and a protein yoghurt

Snack was 60g of cottage cheese, a handful of defrosted, frozen mixed berries, and a half a tablespoon of chopped almonds (approx 5 almonds) - sounds gross, but it is actually amazing and full of protein and calcium.

I think that's pretty healthy. I didn't do cardio today, but when I do, I have a raw fruit and nut bar for a pre-workout snack to fuel my workout.

I trust that you would not expect this to be catered for, if you were invited to Sunday lunch?

You wouldn’t expect your host to be catering for your “current dietary” requirements?

Doubledenim305 · 06/11/2025 00:51

The gym bunny needs to eat his pile of meat before he comes for lunch.
Then when he comes be polite and civilised round the table like any other invited guest.
I don't/wouldn't be playing or entertaining that ridiculous nonsense.
Triggering to hear people have to endure that when they are kindly laying on a lunch for everyone.

@AnnaPhylax "Mr. Universe" 😂

This thread is brilliant! Can't wait for the update.. might have to pile my plate high with white truffle risotto with extra truffle oil & have a magnum of Bollinger on ice waiting

I ate a whole supermarket rotisserie chicken once, but I was in the privacy of my hotel room after a long flight and it was the easiest option. It was fucking great 😀

At somebody else's house and at their expense though - no.

Oh, I could easily eat a whole chicken. I wouldn't, especially not as a guest, but I could.

A PT recently told me there was no way I had gained 4lb of fat over one weekend break because that would mean I would have had to eat an extra 3,500 cals a day, so around 5000 calories per day in total.

He said it as if that would be hard to achieve, once you add Greggs and vodka to the mix it is frighteningly easy Grin

sittingonabeach · 06/11/2025 00:04

I’d have to buy a new oven if I was trying to roast 3 chickens and a gammon, no way would all that fit in our current oven!

WithIcePlease · 06/11/2025 00:04

MeridaBrave · 05/11/2025 22:08

I won’t eat potatoes or “trimmings” or cauliflower cheese or Yorkies. I would eat veggies without fat or sugar added but you haven’t listed any so yes would be meat only, wouldn’t eat a huge portion of meat but prob 1.5 x what others would eat.

Sorry I think you are being unreasonable. Just give him some steamed cauliflower or broccoli or green beans or an undressed salad and a chicken breast. Or a tin of tuna. I’d happily bring own food or contribute a low fat vegetable dish for all.

There's a happy medium between rationing and eating an entire chicken to yourself.

An. Entire. Chicken.

Not an entire breast, or a leg and a breast, but the whole chicken. Approximately 1500 calories of chicken. All to yourself.

A extra chicken would cost you £5 . You could have been a better host imo and choose to make a massive fuss over nothing

I don’t know what size ovens people have got, but if i were already cooking 2 extra large chickens and a 1.8kg gammon I would seriously struggle with a third chicken. OP is doing lots of extras as well. It’s generally a pretty tight operation providing plenty of food for a roast for 11 adults. OP sounds like she’s already doing that admirably, why should she be expected to have the facilities of a professional kitchen?

I wouldn't invite people if I had to monitor and ration what they consumed.

Just meet them at a restaurant so everyone could order, and pay for, what they pleased.

It's hardly monitoring and rationing if one person is setting out to take such a disproportionate excess though

MrsSkylerWhite · 05/11/2025 23:58

If he won’t eat the green veg, maybe a side order of Dulcolax?

For one meal? Seriously? Rude.

I am a bit surprised at so many people saying it's only a few extra quid and OP needs to be a better host.

If for example I invited a group of people around for drinks and said that there were x number of bottles of champagne to start so a couple of glasses of that each and then we would move onto prosecco, I would not be impressed by someone saying that they would only drink the more expensive champagne option, thereby taking more than their fair share, or me being expected to buy additional champagne, as a matter of principle

It is not at all like catering GF for ceoliac or other allergies/intolerances

Agree with this.

The indignation and outrage on this thread are off the charts.

FFS just deal with it; if he turns out to be a user/taker then address it. SIL is stirring the pot; she's the one to take umbrage with.

I'd hate to be so mean and stingy pre-emptively.

I haven't read all the thread/replies so may be repeating.

I'd also be asking DSis if her and her DD are up for a lifetime of meeting his demands when it comes to meal times..

Or should that be ‘meating’ his demands!

Sorry.

Sprouts with chestnuts
creamed spinach
broccoli with pine nuts
spiced red cabbage
Yummers! X

You sound like a wonderful host and I’m saving your list of exciting veg!
Cheeky to expect more of the expensive bits, but I think you’re right to be generous.

TheGirlWhoLived · 05/11/2025 23:32

You sound an excellent host 👏🏼
I could pop round and eat his share of the veg. Sexy is an understatement

SweetnsourNZ · 05/11/2025 23:26

He will be fine. Shove some extra chicken in to roast if you want, but I think your sis is just got a bit worked up over her DD having a new boyfriend and trying too hard. A lot of men actually eat like him, but they know how to be guests too. Anyway, never met a man who doesn't like yorkshire pudding.

I’d have just got more chicken tbh. It’s not worth getting het up about.

I'm looking forward to the update. I am imaging ten normal people asking about the happy couple about the proposal and the wedding. Studiously ignoring the six inch pile of meat the fiance is chowing down on like the first symptom of the zombie virus is manifesting.
