‘Just the meat for me please’ Sunday Lunch issue ’

Mondaytuesdayhappydays · 05/11/2025 13:47

SIS and BIL coming for Sunday Lunch, bringing DN and her BF- recently engaged.
Got a little gift for them and card etc, my parents were coming any way so invited Sunday for food as makes sense.

SIS has just WhatsApped to say jokingly that the BF -mega gym bunny - ‘doesn’t do potatoes and trimmings- but don’t worry he’ll just pile his plate high with meat’
Im doing a couple chickens and a gammon between us all so plenty for everyone alongside stuffing, veg, Yorkies , gravey, cauliflower cheese etc but definitely not for a huge piled up plate of just meat!

I replied lightheartedly to SIS to this effect and she’s not a happy camper at all.
Just texted to say wants him to feel welcome so will bring him a couple of raw pork chops or similar to fry - I’ve said bring them cooked and sliced already in a Tupperware as I won’t be frying chops with all the carnage of the roast going on and my parents milling about under my feet ‘helping’

Shes voice noting at the moment can see the symbol
honestly am I just old or a shit hostess or is this how guests who barely know their hosts I might add expect to be catered for ???

I mean veggie/vegan all power to you
but a plate piled up of meat for lunch seems a bit full on to me ??

Presumably if he was a vegetarian you’d comply?

We've dealt with this. Eating a lot of meat is not something people do because of some sort of belief system considered worthy of respect in a democratic society.
'All the animals must be killed so I can eat them because humans are the superior species!' is not a reason for the OP to have to buy a whole extra chicken for this muscle-bound glutton. If he'd turned up saying he didn't eat animal products because he was Hindu or because he has ethical issues with the idea of exploiting other species for food, OP doesn't have to agree, but she would probably accept this is how he thinks and cater for it - not least because it would be no big deal, unlike finding oven space for an extra chicken and forking out a lot more money than the cost of a bag of lentils and a few carrots.

NotDelia · 05/11/2025 17:47

Yanbu.
My dbil has some funny food fads and I am careful to cater for them but it doesn’t cause me lots of extra cost or effort and he has never expected me to do it. Which makes me happy to since he’s so charming about offering to bring his own food if it’s a bother to cook for him.

It is completely different in your case OP.
”I’m sorry I only eat expensive meat” is a ludicrous dietary requirement!

If he needs protein could he have a side of quinoa or chick peas? Quick and easy.

Notmyreality · 05/11/2025 17:46

GehenSieweiter · 05/11/2025 17:18

It's very different, he's choosing to pile his plate with the most expensive part of the meal.

“The most expensive part of the meal”.
We’re not in Victorian times, do people really monitor the cost of who eats what? Do you always serve your Lord the best cut?
Cue all the “meats expensive” and “people can barely afford to eat” comments. If you were that poor you wouldnt be hosting people for Sunday lunch.

Presumably vegetables are cheaper and easier to prepare in larger quantities?

I'm going to bet that this man's breath is rank.

The SMELL from the toilet every day will be🤢🤮🤮🤮🤮🤮too!’

BillStickersWillBeProsocuted · 05/11/2025 13:55

The difference is a gluten allergy or celiac disease isn’t something someone chooses

Exactly. Plus I know we are more expensive to cater for with 2 coeliac in our family, so always offer to bring bits for them, such as a gf desert, gf gravy, gf bread, snacks etc

RedToothBrush · 05/11/2025 17:44

Mumofoneandone · 05/11/2025 17:42

In addition to my earlier comment I'd be so tempted to do a veggie or vegan meal!!!

Omg yes this.

It's not for the OP to deal with her sisters drama with her daughter.

That's up to the sister to manage without being rude to the OP and dragging her into it.

Irenesortof · 05/11/2025 17:43

Looking forward to hearing what happens on the day @Mondaytuesdayhappydays !
But I'm sitting here wondering whether anyone really believes that their guests have the right to demand a certain quantity of food when they come round. Fine to say if they have food intolerances or even preferences, but who can seriously expect a whole chicken to themselves ?!? I think the reasonable thing is to offer him a share of whatever you are cooking. He can always have his whole roasted goat or whatever for breakfast and eat a normal sized portion when visiting his girlfriend's family - surely?
And of course, he hasn't said anything at all, it's your SIL who is making demands.

sittingonabeach · 05/11/2025 17:42

@Notmyreality not everyone can afford to buy an extra joint of meat just for one guest. What happens if the niece was following the same diet would you but an extra 2 chickens. OP is already having to cater for 11 people. Not sure where I would be able to cook an extra joint of meat

Mumofoneandone · 05/11/2025 17:42

YaWeeFurryBastard · 05/11/2025 13:57

Really? I thought it’s fairly typical for a roast to be indulgent beyond just plain steamed veggies?

No I literally never put butter or honey on veg. We generally have steamed veg as it’s healthier. Bad enough having Yorkie let alone a load of veg soaked in sugar or fat!

Frequency · 05/11/2025 17:40

LilyCanna · 05/11/2025 17:30

Thanks @Frequency for explaining what ‘in a cut’ means, never heard of it before (don’t hang out with body builders!).

Both of my nephews are into bodybuilding, and I've dipped in and out of it in the (distant) past. I follow a few bodybuilders/bikini body people on social media.

Most cuts involve a lot of egg whites, spinach, grilled chicken breast, and broccoli. I don't know of a single bodybuilder who does not eat any veg, no matter what cycle they are in. And none would eat pork while on a cut. The whole point of the diet is to be low in almost everything except protein (calories, carbs, and fat), which pork is not.

landlordhell · 05/11/2025 17:35

JC calm down.

It’s the words “he’ll pile his plate high” isn’t it? Not “can he have a bit extra meat/ will there be enough”, not waiting to be offered or “he’ll just have some meat” but the entitlement that this man can choose to pile his plate high without thinking of others.

We always massively over cater.... It's a family tradition.... 😁

The CF that stands out was a cousin's new BF.... We had 14 to lunch... Cost a bomb... Plenty of meat for seconds...table was groaning...

Except this CF literally PILED his plate... It was quite intriguing to watch... No veg... Just taking great forkfuls of sliced sirloin of beef... And then helped himself to thickly sliced chicken and then loads of gammon... He had a large portion, enough for about 5 people... The large plate was literally 6 inches deep in meat....

He then proceeded to eat it as if he hadn't eaten for a month.

He didn't even turn up with a cheap bottle or any sparkling wit /conversation...

Nothing! ... The cousin was simpering over him... How he 'ate well /liked his food'..

No shit..

Luckily we didn't see him again as it fizzled out...

Total CF

SwirlyShirly · 05/11/2025 17:37

I don’t think they would take it lying down at a Toby carvery so, to that end, YANBU.

BishyBarnyBee · 05/11/2025 17:37

It's one meal. You're offering to entertain part of your extended family. There are many ways the younger generation can bring home someone the older generation find challenging. This seems to me at the harmless end of the scale.

You're already serving meat. As a percentage of cost and effort, chucking a few chicken breasts in the oven isn't that big a deal. I'd just suck it up, even though it's a million miles away from my values around food.

But of course you always have the Mumsnet option of saying "that doesn't work for me".

CalzoneOnLegs · 05/11/2025 17:36

BarnacleBeasley · 05/11/2025 13:51

I can understand not eating potatoes, but if he doesn't eat any vegetables he'll get scurvy.

And constipation and bowel issues. Uuugh

landlordhell · 05/11/2025 17:35

Notmyreality · 05/11/2025 17:28

This. I would just buy a bit if extra chicken or similar and not think any more on it.

He should bring his own!

IcingOnTheTop · 05/11/2025 17:35

I love Cali cheese
mint peas
honey roast carrots and parsnips
Swede mash with sour cream and butter
cabbage with red onion and bacon

god I love sexy veg !

I'm torn on this post, on the one hand I think your sister and BF are rude but then also I can see that this veg isn't for everyone. I would love it but I always cook steamed veg for a regular sunday roast - this would be a Christmas Day type meal not a regular Sunday dinner.

Do you know if he doesn't like veg or just veg loaded with things like cheese, honey, butter, cream, bacon eyc.....

If this was someone coming to my house I would probably chuck in a sweet potato to bake and buy some frozen veg to steam (I think you can do that in the microwave)

honeybeetheoneandonly · 05/11/2025 17:34

CarterBeatsTheDevil · 05/11/2025 16:41

Actually, you know, I've never tried turkey stock or soup, thinking about it. My mum always said it was too strong and she only made it for Christmas to feed everyone, so I actually have no idea whether I like it or not!

Any stock can be frozen and used for risottos. Made some fab risottos with the most bizarre stock choices, including boiled ham water.

landlordhell · 05/11/2025 17:34

Meat is very different to GF/ allergies or religious requirements . Meat is expensive!!!!
In that case get a couple of tins of Spam in!

Haaaruuuumph · 05/11/2025 17:33

Send a voicenote back telling her where the nearest Toby Carvery is and advise her to leave an hour early so that Mr Gym Bunny can chow down on as much meat as he can before arriving at yours for a civilised sit down meal with all the food groups

LilyCanna · 05/11/2025 17:30

Frequency · 05/11/2025 17:10

People who are on a cut generally don't eat piles of fatty meat like fried pork chops either.

His diet makes no sense in terms of "gym bunnies".

Bodybuilders either maintain, cut (calories to lose body fat) or bulk (excess calories from protein, fat, and carbs)

People just wanting to improve their health eat "clean".

Eating nothing but pork chops sounds very Atkins to me, which has fuck all to do with the gym and shouldn't stop him from eating a normal portion of meat with some broccoli and leafy greens.

Thanks @Frequency for explaining what ‘in a cut’ means, never heard of it before (don’t hang out with body builders!).
