‘Just the meat for me please’ Sunday Lunch issue ’

Mondaytuesdayhappydays · 05/11/2025 13:47

SIS and BIL coming for Sunday Lunch, bringing DN and her BF- recently engaged.
Got a little gift for them and card etc, my parents were coming any way so invited Sunday for food as makes sense.

SIS has just WhatsApped to say jokingly that the BF -mega gym bunny - ‘doesn’t do potatoes and trimmings- but don’t worry he’ll just pile his plate high with meat’
Im doing a couple chickens and a gammon between us all so plenty for everyone alongside stuffing, veg, Yorkies , gravey, cauliflower cheese etc but definitely not for a huge piled up plate of just meat!

I replied lightheartedly to SIS to this effect and she’s not a happy camper at all.
Just texted to say wants him to feel welcome so will bring him a couple of raw pork chops or similar to fry - I’ve said bring them cooked and sliced already in a Tupperware as I won’t be frying chops with all the carnage of the roast going on and my parents milling about under my feet ‘helping’

Shes voice noting at the moment can see the symbol
honestly am I just old or a shit hostess or is this how guests who barely know their hosts I might add expect to be catered for ???

I mean veggie/vegan all power to you
but a plate piled up of meat for lunch seems a bit full on to me ??

I think you were rude. If a guest was GF surely you’d cater for them, I don’t see how this is any different? Just buy a bit extra meat so there’s enough to go round.

Meat is hugely expensive and not fair to ask
someone he’s never met to pay for this .

fatcat2007 · 05/11/2025 19:45

We have all kinds of funny diets to cater for in our family although I haven’t heard of this one. We just put all the food in the middle of the table and people serve themselves the bits they want. Everyone can easily see how much there is and says things like “please pass the potatoes” and “would you like a Yorkshire pudding”. Surely he’ll just do that not nick bits of other people’s plates, he’ll just look what there is and what other people have taken?

Calm down. It’s a thread on the internet. You don’t need to take this seriously.

Have you not read her OP. She literally said in a text they they may run out.

How on earth does anyone plan to host guests and already anticipates running out of food because one person eats more meat and no veg.

FullOfMomsense · 05/11/2025 19:42

Cheesypasta · 05/11/2025 16:35

Feel free to decline invitations where someone else cooks what they fancy for you. The problem will probably resolve itself then over time.

I do! I can't stand people who invite us for a dinner party without giving the heads up first of what we'll be eating. I'm not fussy but I have some intolerances and I cba with going hungry because people aren't thoughtful. Thanks for the advice! xx

Some people doing the whole gym, extreme eating thing, will absolutely eat enough meat in one sitting to feed four people generously...

I can afford to host 11 people (I haven't the room, but theoretically...) - I could not afford to feed 15 people. Should we all have to be capable of catering for 4 more people than are actually there just because one guest is a cheeky fucker?!

If you can’t, then don’t invite them. It’s not rocket science.

WiddlinDiddlin · 05/11/2025 19:41

WildLimePoet · 05/11/2025 19:37

Why not just get more meat? Why are you hosting people if you don’t have enough food. If he wants to eat now meat, why would you knowingly be difficult and risk running out?

Why would u say this? Its not likely he would have really piled up meat to the ceiling ... u took it so literally and answered rudely. All you had to do was cook what you was already cooking

How ludicrous. OP is certainly not being difficult.
There will be plenty of food.

Have you not read her OP. She literally said in a text they they may run out.

This sounds like an absolute nightmare & tbh @Mondaytuesdayhappydays you have the patience of a saint, maybe he is oblivious to your sister making it known but in fairness she wouldn't have mentioned it if it WASN'T a big deal.. Jesus wept I'm a vegetarian & have an E.D. that rares up sometimes still & even I'm not that hard to cater for 😆Good luck! Can't wait for the update!

Also the stories of some (men) guests hoovering up all the food makes me sick & angry, entitled pricks! 😡

Blueskiesandrainbows · 05/11/2025 19:28

This … just chuck in some extra chicken portions they’ll just cook along with the chicken, why make such a mountain out of it, extremely rude in my opinion.

Genuinely surprised by this reaction.

To me it's far more rude to expect that a host, who is already catering to 11 people, should have to pay for and cook even more food to accommodate a guest who will only eat the most expensive thing being served.

MN is strange. No one likes their famay, no one likes their in laws, no one likes opening the front door when someone knocks, no one like hosting people, or if they do host people, they just like to create drama by deliberately not doing the basics like getting enough food.

Weird people.

WiddlinDiddlin · 05/11/2025 19:39

I really hope you update after the event.

I think you're spot on to fear he expects to fill his plate up with enough food to feed four+ adults, at the expense of everyone else.

Still, at least you have early warning he may do that so you can ask people to pass plates up to plate up the meat and then tell them to help themselves to the veg, and that leaves no opportunity for him to take more than is fair.

ChikinLikin · 05/11/2025 19:37

Is he older? And Canadian? Might be Jordan Peterson.

PlumpHobbit · 05/11/2025 19:35

YANBU, he can either eat the meat and veg, or he can bring some extra meat you could just shove in the oven with the rest, e.g. some chicken breats/pork chops, given its the most expensive part of the meal

It would be different if it were an allergy e.g. gluten intolerance, or he was veggie/vegan

Im sure one meal with some extras wont hurt him, unless its for health reasons.

I can predict they will be instructing you how to cook the meat in the "healthiest possible way" for him next and questioning how it was cooked!

If sister is that adamant hes catered to exactly SHE could precook some chicken breats/his chops and bring them so all you need to do is microwave them

Can't help wondering if this is SIS talking & he might actually be a normal person?

I’m wondering the same thing. He’s getting slated on here, called all sorts and he hasn’t actually done anything. He’d probably be mortified to know all the fuss that’s being made on his account.

NoSoupForU · 05/11/2025 19:34

She's rude as fuck, as is he if he's expecting to rock up to someone else's house and think he's ok basically requesting a few full portions of a main.

Rentin · 05/11/2025 19:33

YANBU. There should be no opportunity for him to pile his own plate high. I’d plate up for him and instruct him to leave whatever he doesn’t want.

This is actually partly why I think that plating up for people is still worthwhile, even though it seems to be falling out of fashion in favour of everyone helping themselves. I much prefer just getting a plateful of food.

A lot of times I’ve been at “plate up yourselves” dinners, there’s been people pilling their plates up with pigs in blankets and yorkshire puddings and leaving the brocolli behind. To make sure everyone has enough while accounting for the couple of men gorging themselves you would have to make a lot of extra food. I’m not putting on a banquet because some people think it appropriate to eat an entire chicken at someone’s house.

At my DBs house, they often host both our side of the family and SILs side of the family. SiLs side of the family are otherwise perfectly normal people but there’s a couple of men (usually partners of one of the siblings) that are like vultures - to the point it makes the whole thing quite stressful.

I’ve never seen anything like it. Food gets put down and they’re like hungry lions pawing at it. They grab enough for them and their kids to have multiple servings. At BBQs they sit around the serving plate waiting and often consume three burgers before some guests have had anything.

If you ask whether there’s any burgers going, you get told they’re all gone so will have to wait for the next batch. Then the same thing happens again as soon as the next batch comes out. If you bring it up, they’ll laugh it off and joke about having to get there first. I don’t even know what that would look like aside from wrestling a grown man for a sausage because they dive on it as soon as it appears.

My 70 year old DM has now given up and secretly eats a small meal before we go there for dinner because it’s so hard work.

As usual, I have read the first few plus all the OP, so I know you have heard of the carnivore diet. DH has been on it for ages (over 2 years I am sure). Fortunately, from this POV if no other, he never goes anywhere except possibly at Christmas, but when he does, the people we are visiting know, and he takes a pile of steaks with him. I still feel embarrassed, but I must say the diet has really really helped him (he has a strange and rare neuro disease, and it seems to have helped, and of course he is slim, which also helps).

I am FED UP with being told every time I eat that vegetables are trying to kill me, though....
