Would you have told this woman that half her bum was hanging out?

DW and I were at a train station on Saturday which was full of people dressed up for Halloween. A bit ahead of us were two women whose costumes incorporated extremely short skirts. The woman on the left had got her skirt just long enough to cover everything but the woman on the right had the lower half of her bum showing.

DW wanted to say something to her, as she was worried she might not be aware and would appreciate being told. I said I didn't think this was a good idea, as she might have deliberately worn her skirt that short and therefore might react badly to someone bringing it up like it's a bad thing.

We ended up just carrying on to our train and not saying anything. Was I in the wrong to persuade DW not to get involved?

YABU - you should have said something to the woman

YANBU - you were right not to get involved

Thank you for the valuable lesson. I found OP's comments to be a bit leery and creepy so I wrongly assumed they were a man. I would like to apologise for that and hope that by looking foolish I've given you a chance to feel a bit superior and smug and provide a useful reminder to everyone else that women can be creepy too.

What was 'creepy and leery' about my comments?!

I doubt very much that the woman didn’t know she was displaying her bottom. I’d assume it was intentional.

spoonbillstretford · 04/11/2025 17:20

I would assume someone knew if they were wearing something that short, and would just look away, as they might not thank you for telling them if they did know. I would tell someone if they had their skirt tucked in their pants or something and obviously hadn't meant to flash.

Annually my DH and I attend a formal ball. Over the years "formal" has been a moving target. Last year people must have gotten special invitations that said "this year formal means let your tits hang out" because that was how 90% of the women of all ages dressed. There was one woman whose dress was cut so low that her areola was on display all evening. At one point she was on the dance floor and her breast came out of her dress. Several people around her motioned to her or said something and she continued to dance as though it were perfectly normal. She just brushed them all off. I will never tell anyone unless it is clear that they did not intend to garner attention for the clothing mishap.

User5306921 · 04/11/2025 16:58

I wouldn't have said anything.
Imo if people dress with their bums showing, its intentional and also the type of people who dress like that would give you a slap rather than be pleased you told them.

PinkPonyClubDancer · 04/11/2025 16:51

It’s very likely that she knew and it was intentional.

If your wife thought it was worth mentioning then why did you stop her? The thought of a man trying to stop a woman telling another woman about a wardrobe malfunction makes me very uneasy. I've had someone tell me similar and I've been very grateful to them.

Why are you assuming that OP is a man?

2cubesoficeandasliceoflime · 04/11/2025 16:40

If it had obviously ridden up or was tucked in her knickers or something then yes, you should have said.

If it just looked like an obscenly short skirt, then she'll have been aware so you did right to leave it alone.

Well, one of them had painted her arse (and the rest of her) blue all over, and was wearing a black wig and an ultra-short wedding dress/basque thing that left the lower parts of said blue arse very visible indeed -- I think she may have been a Sexy Bride of Frankenstein, kind of? I kind of admired her chutzpah. I mean, I was wearing a jumper, a coat and biker boots, and had just come from a Buddhist meditation retreat. Grin

There was also a duo who had fully committed to Shrek and Princess Fiona, but no semi-bare green arses were involved.

Maybe she was a Smurf?

Sparkletastic · 04/11/2025 16:39

If the person had their skirt tucked in their knickers I’d tell them. If they were just wearing a very short skirt I’d leave them be. HTH

OP is a woman. You know, like a same sex marriage kind of DW? Look a bit daft now don’t you? Maybe be a little less quick with the misandrist comments as you can end up looking a bit silly.

How do you know it was not intentional?

She doesn’t, that’s the point.

BunnyLake · 04/11/2025 16:35

If she was on her own I might in case it was a mistake but as she was with a friend I’d think she’d soon tell her if it was. You just don’t know if you’d get a thanks or an abusive scream in the face unfortunately.

Tooty78 · 04/11/2025 16:35

In the 70s, handkerchief skirts and dresses were in fashion. I was in the toilets of a very busy bar, when a girl came out of the toilet and went to wash her hands. As is the way of the handkerchief skirts, she had pulled up her knickers and caught one of the back panels which was tucked up, baring her bum. There is no way the sisterhood would in me would let her walk back into the bar like that. The girl was mortified, but we had a laugh about it, and it taught me a lesson for when I wore my handkerchief skirt. Mine was floral on a black background bought from Wallis, and I loved that skirt. Happy Days😀

I just started a thread about the micro skirts and shorts for halloween.

It’s something when your private parts are on display in a train station in the name of fashion.

She knew, no point in telling her

I wouldn’t have said anything unless it was an obvious wardrobe malfunction - skirt tucked into knickers kind of thing

Absolutely this^ it's not for anyone else to police what women wear ffs. Would I wear a skirt that half covers my bum- no. But lots of women are happy with this. Their call.

Unless it's an obvious malfunction eg skirt tucked into pants or a period leak then I wouldn't say anything, especially if someone can't do anything about it when they're out in town. I think it's very likely she knew and picked a short skirt because she wanted to feel sexy. I think saying something would have come across as rude and judgemental which it kind of is.

LarrySherbert · 04/11/2025 16:15

My daughter ordered one of those recently, not realising how short it actually was. She was shocked, called it a belt and sent it back. She is 19 and not remotely averse to showing a bit of flesh.

I didn't comment but will admit I was glad she didn't wear it.

NoTouch · 04/11/2025 16:12

ds sent me a group picture of his friends and their gf's Halloween costumes and they did not leave much to the imagination! So I expect she knew - if you've got it flaunt it!

I wouldn't have said anything unless it looked like something was obviously wrong - like half her skirt tucked into knickers with loo roll hanging out! (even then it might have been the costume!)

PepsiRelax · 04/11/2025 16:10

Sounds a deliberate choice and would have been weird to say something, it’s different if their skirt is tucked into their pants when they’re coming out of the toilet type thing and they’re on their own and didn’t realise. Short skirts with a sexy type Halloween costume, they know how short they are especially if they’re with a friend.

MN is so heteronormative haha some comments are hilarious

user0507 · 04/11/2025 16:08

DN's girlfriend wore a similar short skirt to a family lunch last year. Together with suspenders and stockings. It was clearly deliberately provocative. You could literally see most of her bum.

92 YO DM wasted no time in telling her we could see her knickers and she'd catch a chill so she'd better get changed before we sat down to eat.

Calliopespa · 04/11/2025 16:04

MissDoubleU · 04/11/2025 15:53

The woman knew how short her skirt was. After telllinf her, what was she meant to do? She obviously doesn’t have a spare on her. She was heading out to begin her evening. She can’t grow more skirt.

Telling her would do nothing but appease your own moral outrage and piss off this lady who frankly, likely wanted her bum on show.

Minding your business was the correct call. And maybe eyes off other peoples bums.

But then eyes off would be exceedingly disappointing for the woman who, as you say "wanted her bum on show."

I guess she could pull it down a little if it turned out she didn't want it showing quite so much.
