Would you have told this woman that half her bum was hanging out?

DW and I were at a train station on Saturday which was full of people dressed up for Halloween. A bit ahead of us were two women whose costumes incorporated extremely short skirts. The woman on the left had got her skirt just long enough to cover everything but the woman on the right had the lower half of her bum showing.

DW wanted to say something to her, as she was worried she might not be aware and would appreciate being told. I said I didn't think this was a good idea, as she might have deliberately worn her skirt that short and therefore might react badly to someone bringing it up like it's a bad thing.

We ended up just carrying on to our train and not saying anything. Was I in the wrong to persuade DW not to get involved?

YABU - you should have said something to the woman

YANBU - you were right not to get involved

I had a feeling OP was a woman and checked with her, but I don't think it's necessarily wrong to assume a poster talking about their wife on a mainly female forum is likely male. The vast majority of threads are still about heterosexual relationships. Yes, ideally people will always check but I don't think it hurts men to assume a poster is male.

On a mainly female forum why not assume female?

CantBreathe90 · 04/11/2025 18:43

I'm pretty sure this is the fashion at the moment? We get it loads here, and have done for months.

The misogyny is staggering.

If your wife thought it was worth mentioning then why did you stop her? The thought of a man trying to stop a woman telling another woman about a wardrobe malfunction makes me very uneasy. I've had someone tell me similar and I've been very grateful to them.

I love how self righteous this is while also being arrogantly heteronormative.

PumpkinSpiceCake · 04/11/2025 18:34

No I wouldn’t have and would have assumed it was deliberate

PInkyStarfish · 04/11/2025 18:28

Go outside and recreate the look and you will feel that your buttocks are exposed without actually seeing them!

Of course she knew.

pilates · 04/11/2025 18:27

Its no-ones business really. I’m sure she knew her arse was hanging out.

OK, I'm laughing! Apologies x

Given that it's a mainly female forum, I tend to assume everyone here is a woman. Even the ones who mention their wife I tend to assume are gay until they state otherwise.

This is despite being a man on Mumsnet myself. Go figure!

I think you're a minority.

The man was having a conversation with his DW. A man asks a question on MN about a female body and it’s considered inappropriate!

Maybe I am naive!

Are you male? It would have been better coming from your DW.

I would never say anything to anyone about this kind of thing in this day and age. You never know what you'll be accused of.

BogRollBOGOF · 04/11/2025 18:14

In the spring I saw a woman walking down the road in what would be best described as a peplum rather than a skirt. She possibly had a thong tucked away there, but her bare bum cheeks were certainly hanging out for the world to see.

It's an unfortunate fashion. I hope it passes quickly.

TappyGilmore · 04/11/2025 18:08

You assume she didn’t know and it wasn’t intentional? I’d have 100% thought that it was intentional and she couldn’t have not known. There’s a trend amongst the younger generation to wear shorts that expose their ass cheeks, this is just a variation of that.

I wouldn't have said anything
I saw a women in Morrisons a few months ago she was wearing an extremely short t shirt dress and was carrying something cumbersome ( can't remember what) and kept bending over to pick stuff I dont think she was wearing underwear 🙈
I was really trying not to look but she was right in front of me.

I saw on woman posing for a photo on the walls of Dubrovnik. The photographer was at her side, but I was walking up the hill towards her and saw right up her skirt. Definitely no knickers! I really didn't want to see that on my holiday - I considered telling her, but what exactly would I say? "Please keep your privates private!"?

OP is a woman. You know, like a same sex marriage kind of DW? Look a bit daft now don’t you? Maybe be a little less quick with the misandrist comments as you can end up looking a bit silly.

Are you 90 years old? Do you live under a rock? It's halloween, tis the season for wearing skimpy outfits, and usually not getting old dears asking if you're aware your bum is 'hanging out'. Unless she's wearing smart clothes and has her skirt tucked in her tights, or has walked out the door in a blouse, shoes and no trousers, and you can safely say it's not a halloween costume, and is in fact an error she would like to be aware of, leave women alone!

Thank you for the valuable lesson. I found OP's comments to be a bit leery and creepy so I wrongly assumed they were a man. I would like to apologise for that and hope that by looking foolish I've given you a chance to feel a bit superior and smug and provide a useful reminder to everyone else that women can be creepy too.

😂

HansHolbein · 04/11/2025 17:51

It was intentional, so no.

Or flapping?

Do your flaps hang low, do they wobble to and fro? Can you tie them in a knot, can you tie them in a bow?😂 Not sure why that popped into my head….

Unless it’s toilet paper stuck on the bottom of a shoe mind your own business
