10 years service not acknowledged

I've worked for the same company for 10 years - on either 2nd or 3rd of November. Gone into work today and nothing. How petty some of you may think, but considering another employee got recognition for 5 years service not too long ago with a nice bunch of flowers and chocs aibu to not feel slightly miffed?

Saying "I've never had any recognition for length of service in any of my jobs so surely it doesn't exist." = extrapolating with no logical or factual basis, therefore not a helpful/useful/"valid" point, not to mention ignorant and arrogant

If you are going to make a pompous point @tokennamechange , at least bother to actually get the correct post and now add your own flair to it I’ve never had any recognition of time served in any of my jobs. Surely that’s not a thing until you retire?

I agree with the crux of your point but delivery… shite

Fair enough. But I am one person with one opinion and one set of experiences. Which are as valid as anyone else’s on an open forum. So tough luck if that bores you quite frankly.

Well, no. Because posts that evidence a basic grasp of logic are more "valid", actually.

I'll break it down slowly so you understand.

Saying "I've never had any recognition for length of service in any of my jobs, I didn't realise it was a thing" = fine. A factual statement based on your own experience.

At my workplace you get recognition at 5, 1,15, 20,25, 30, 35 and so on. There is a party every year where milestone anniversaries are recognised. You get a present and an extra day off at 5 and 10 years of service. So yanbu if someone was recognised and you weren’t.

No idea why you’re getting such a hard time here OP. I’ve not personally seen worked anywhere where they’ve recognised long service but it’s not an entirely alien concept to me and I can see why you’d be disappointed.

Agree with you that it should be consistent for all. And understand why you haven’t pushed it because it’s not recognition if you have to ask for it.

On the back of what others have said about extra holiday for long service it might be checking if you’re entitled to anything like that and chasing it up if you don’t get it.

I’ve been pretty baffled by this thread, too. There seem to be a few posters who are just determined to be unkind to OP and/or wilfully misunderstand and misinterpret what she’s upset about. It’s really bloody weird.

We get £200 and a meal in a hotel where we are presented with a long service award by the MD after 10
years service and every 5 years after that.

My behaviour at work is fine, it's that some have decided to brand me some awful, miserable arsehole of an employee. And have spent the whole day on mn giving their expert opinions to others because they're such wonderful people. And these people are mothers, I feel for their kids if they come to them with a problem.

I’d be miffed too @OneGreyBiscuit. At my place we get an acknowledgement after 1 year and then at 5, 10, 15, 20 etc.
As seems to be the norm nowadays your thread has the usual collective of people who either haven’t bothered to read your post properly or who seem determined to take it/you to bits. Because you haven’t had a great day so hey….. let’s rub salt in the wound! ignore ignore xxxx

Judging by other comments you've made today, you're on a roll aren't you?

Yes, a joy

Icecreamisthebest · 04/11/2025 19:43

YANBU. Workplaces need to be consistent with things like this. Otherwise it impacts morale.

Other peoples experiences at different workplaces are irrelevant. And it’s a length of service award, not an award for any other reason so your behaviour in the workplace is also irrelevant

. You are right to be miffed. And I’m not sure why you are getting a hard time. This is poor management.

If I'm reading you correct. I don't work in a circus. My job doesn't require me to be insanely happy every minute of the shift. Maybe you never moan, jolly well done to you!🥳

As I say, a joy

DiscoBob · 04/11/2025 19:35

If it was 'recognised' in the form of some kind of financial reward then I guess I'd be asking what the policy was on such things.

'I noticed Barbara received an Ann Summers Voucher and a giant hand crafted chocolate bust of Gary Barlow in honour of her five years loyal service. So what should one expect for a decade?'

OneGreyBiscuit · 04/11/2025 19:33

Curleduphappy · 04/11/2025 19:28

The op sounds like a joy to work with!

Happy 10 years in service! My 10 years was the 2nd November too.

OneGreyBiscuit · 04/11/2025 19:22

2chocolateoranges · 04/11/2025 19:15

So basically you are saying the op didn’t get recognised because of her behaviour and that I didn’t get a leaving gift from work because I’m an arsehole too? 😂😂😂

I’ll tell you why I didn’t get a gift because I stood up to the bully and protected a few of the younger staff who were too afraid to “step outside of the bully’s box”. The bully controlled the workplace .

i did get many gifts from customers and other teams in the workplace just not my team, but I can live with that because I did what was right.

I know it's laughable. In 10 years I've never had a complaint against me, a disciplinary but according to that poster i'm the biggest arsehole you could ever wish to work with! Maybe a bit of projection?🤣

Because it never ceases to amaze me how OP’s lack the insight that of after a decade of service not one colleague acknowledged the departure, whereas they always do for others… the issue, in all likelihood, very very much is because of the OP and her behaviour during those ten years

You also happen to be another one whose every reply has been with an accusing tone. Exactly how has this affected you, your day, your life? If you can't understand the problem, that's fine, enjoy your life. If you have two children and only one gets brought a present by someone, then that would be ok with you? For the other to be left out? If the answers yes then don't bother with any more replies.

I'm not trying to be accusatory, more matter of fact. You want the problem resolved so speaking to your managers seems the most sensible course of action. It would have taken you much less time than it has to respond to this thread and you would be ending the day with a solution.

Maybe your correct and I like to think about things first before asking questions which is why I didn't say anything.

I'm not actually sure what questions you need to think about. Clearly this can only be answered by your actual managers so unless you say something then there will be no solution.
