Someone who’s passionate, young and willing to break the rules in politics, all while caring about his city and the people in it. I wish we had someone like that here.

Actually he is half Hindu and half Muslim.
His mum, Mira Nair, is a well known and Oscar nominated film maker for Monsoon Wedding and Salaam Bombay

Actually, he is a proud Muslim man. He released a video about a week ago about his identity as a Muslim and the awful Islamophobia he has endured during his campaign.

Holluschickie · 03/11/2025 23:36

Zach Goldsmith and Zach Polanski are two very different people being confused on this thread.

Zach goldsmith of the greens is very much our UK Mamdani - he seems to be trying hard break the mould.

Are you forgetting his mayoral campaign and the way he exploited racial tensions when attacking Khan personally?

He shows his true colours then.

I wonder if you are aware that even American Jewish people have voted for him? *shock horror

A lot of American Jewish people.

Mamdani has never spoken negatively about Jewish people. On the contrary, he consistently calls antisemitism a serious problem and has released extensive policy proposals to protect Jewish New Yorkers. His platform includes increasing funding to prevent hate crimes and appointing a senior adviser in City Hall to tackle antisemitism.

He has specifically condemned the killing of Israeli civilians, including on October 7, and has consistently advocated for nonviolent political resistance. A couple of weeks ago, he attended a vigil for Israeli and Palestinian victims and condemned Hamas’s violations of international law.

People can't handle the fact that he is Muslim, they equate Muslim with terrosism support and nothing he does or says will change that for some.

SomeoneSomewheree · 03/11/2025 23:17

The poll found that 43% of Jewish voters in the US city said they would vote for Mamdani, including 67% of Jewish voters aged 18 to 44. Cuomo trailed with 26% of Jewish voters, followed by Mayor Eric Adams with 15%.

Because he wants to represent the largest number of Jews outside Israel so a movement that wants to kill Jews is pretty relevant.

I am still not understanding what have the awful attacks in Manchester got to do with Mamdani?
Just because he is pro-pal doesn’t mean he has anything to do with a movement that wants to kill Jews?!

Adam Lehrer, writer for Tablet Magazine, seems to have go the measure of him.

(Edited for brevity)

Forget, for a moment, Mamdani's absurd and self-canceling politics-a tangle of Third Worldist pseudo-communism, performative radicalism, and the sort of NGO-scented global liberalism that flatters itself as rebellion-and just look at him as a man. As a personality. And ask yourself, sincerely: What is it they see in him?

To understand why he's winning—and why he'll keep winning— you have to understand this creature of thwarted ambition, whose politics are not born of conviction but of resentment, who has mistaken vengeance for virtue and failure for depth.

Despite the apparent diversity of Zohran's supporters, it was clear who truly dominated the crowd: the young. No doubt, the overeducated, underemployed left-wing 20-and 30-something have set the foundation for Zohran's messaging and campaign aesthetics, and it's their sensibilities that are most taken into consideration.

Zohran is a human algorithm trained on the gestures and cadences of the constituencies he hopes to seduce.

Today's young activists don't really want to change the world. They want to find themselves, or at least a version of themselves that photographs well. Political dissent has become an another lifestyle trend, ripe for monetization. Radical
symbols-the raised fist, the pride flag-are stripped of context, rebranded as empowerment kits, and sold back to their original owners.

While many Jews are alarmed by Zohran's flirtations with Islamist rhetoric, the truth is far duller-and somehow more sinister. He's not so much a Hamas ideologue as he is a bland liberal opportunist masquerading as a
revolutionary. His politics are a chaotic slurry of leftist identity jargon, boutique communism, NGO globalism, and shallow religious signaling.

We stand on the threshold of a new era, one in which the world's largest, most intricate city will be governed by people who possess no convictions, no principles, nothing but the day's trending slogan and the algorithmic confidence of the perpetually online.

I thought insulting big chunks of an electorate was generally agreed to be counterproductive?

This article seems to be as short on facts as it is long on calling people names.

keeptalkinghappytalk · 03/11/2025 23:14

He s a nasty piece of work... can t bring himself to condemn the torturers of Hamas who burnt kids to death ( before any retaliation by Israel). I saw the clip of him outside a mosque faking emotion ( lots of theatrical pauses and swallowing) ' in the memory of his aunt'. He went on to say how 9 11 affected this aunt ( whose existence some have doubted) as she was worried about wearing her hijab on the New York subway, Not a word about the 3000 New Yorkers who were killed by Islamists that day ... in his own city!
He will sow division, he s a taker of sides not a bridge builder

Why does Mamdani have to be 'pro-Israel'? He isn't running to be mayor in Israel is he?

SomeoneSomewheree · 03/11/2025 23:10

So many haters as usual on these sort of threads. I think Mamdani is great and on course for winning!

Yes. I also read the sentence where you said you didn't understand tbe relevance of attacks on Jews in Manchester, which was an antisemitic attack holding Jews responsible for Israeli actions.

Yes I am quite aware of the terrible attacks in Manchester, not that I understand what it has to do with a mayoral candidate from NYC?

I think the problem with the phrase is that some see it as anti-semitic and some don’t - I don’t think it should be used, I think another less charged phrase could be used.

I believed him to have said that he wouldn’t stop the freedom of speech, as some people believe it to mean non-violent solidarity with Palestinians, but said that he would not use it himself.

IMO Trump and Netenyahu/Israeli government have said and done worse.

I do truly believe a lot of hate for Mamdani because of his race and religion

What do you think globalise the intifada means?

Rocknrollstar · 03/11/2025 22:51

LostInManhattan · 03/11/2025 18:26

Even running a campaign that’s not based on hatred and division is a breath of fresh air.

No hatred? What have you been reading? He has been quite vitriolic about Israel. And, btw, he can’t finance his policies and they have to be agreed by the State Legislature. He will be a disaster.

So Jews don't count?

In the primaries 67% of Jewish people under the age of 44 voted for Mamdani, he got 43% of the Jewish vote overall. Jews do count and lots are voting for a progressive candidate who wants every New Yorker to have access to a basic standard of living over a sex pest.

briq · 03/11/2025 22:47

He's awful. Without going into his politics, he just feels extremely fake to me.

PevenseygirlQQ · 03/11/2025 22:45

mathsquestions · 03/11/2025 22:30

He repeatedly refused to condemn the expression “globalise the intifada” (see YouTube for the interview). To many that expression simply means antisemitic terror attacks like the recent one in Manchester in which two Jews were killed at their synagogue on the holiest day in the Jewish calendar.

I don’t think someone like that is wonderful and wouldn’t want him here.

Well he ain't white and he's Muslim. Can't allow HIM to be elected. Oh and he's a Communist also, I forgot that bit. Anything else?

He will make a great mayor. Shake 'em all up a bit. But Trump said he will scupper the city budget or something if he gets in, so that's that isn't it? Somebody is afraid of him.

I know absolutely nothing about him other than his election would seriously piss Trump off. That’ll do for me.

He’s an antisemite, so, no. I think he’s a fake tbh.

New York Jews seem very happy with him
