Anyone like to reconsider what they posted about the train attack on Saturday night?

There were (to my mind) some horrific posts claiming that it MUST be a terrorist attack, demanding information on the attacker’s race and motivations NOW, shouting about Starmer censorship and picking fights with anyone suggesting it might not be cut and dried and to wait for more information. Hideously racist as well.
If that was you - any reflections today? What will you do if there’s a next time?

has the train driver been named? He certainly acted coolly and professionally, and did his job well. But I’m pretty sure he would not put himself in the same category as the man who is currently critically ill in hospital after putting himself between a knife wielding criminal and his victims…..

I really can’t say too much but I sort of know the train driver. I’m amazed at what he did and how he acted.

Piggywaspushed · 04/11/2025 18:05

Yes, he's been named, yesterday in fact.

I'm not playing hero-competitions here - please take that as a given. I think everyone involved in the events response was truly outstanding - but I think it will be a really useful measure of the attitudes in our country if we compare the publicity that Samir - an Arabic, likely moslem man who confronted attacker in person, got injured; gets vs. the train driver - sealed in cab, quick thinking and skilled, but not at personal risk - white veteran with medals. It should be equal or very close shouldn't it - but let's see what happens.

And I also think we need to take a beat before we condemn the response of the police to earlier incidents. Those who wanted Williams caught when he was in the wind (and in the case of the barbershop, it only got reported 2 hours after he had gone) also need to think about their opinions on facial recognition cameras on public transport and infrastructure.

I imagine there is going to be a pile-in on Cambs police coming - their efforts are already getting omitted when we see reports of how the BTP stormed the train (BTP weren't anywhere near until after the events).

I wonder if Russia has been investing in sending a load of bots onto prominent western internet sites in order to try and change the zeitgeist of the popular culture. We know they are terrified of the strength of our diversity and would probably do anything they can to put a stop to it by sowing discord among communities. We must not fall for it.

Piggywaspushed · 04/11/2025 17:28

It would appear Anthony Williams is homeless so we need a bigger national conversation about the rise in homelessness and its links to poor mental health provision and treatment and care.

Actually footage on my local news will let anyone who doesn't know the area see that Peterborough is very multicultural and plenty of the passengers on the train came from a very broad range of backgrounds.

I don't know what went on with the troubling wrongful arrest but I do suspect it's also an oversimplification that the other man was the only other Black man on the train.

AnAlpacaForChristmasPleaseSanta · 04/11/2025 16:43

BIossomtoes · 04/11/2025 13:10

And already the mental gymnastics have been started by those whose brains have been scrambled by this news. 😂

Weren't there some posts on one of the other threads claiming that the knife man was only targeting white people, despite not one single name being released at that point?

This poor but incredibly heroic man must just have been an oversight on the attackers part in that case.

I hope Mr Zitouni has a full and fast recovery.

CurlewKate · 04/11/2025 15:52

Most of the awful posters on that thread will be suffering from some form of crisis trying to process the fact that the guy currently fighting for his life after tackling the attacker with unimaginable courage appears to be a Muslim….

BundleBoogie · 04/11/2025 15:16

There are known terrorists among the boat people though. One was caught after raping a woman in Hyde Park. He was from Egypt.

We would be stupid not to be open to the possibility. Oh wait…

It is indeed sensible to be open to the idea that people arriving in small boats might well have bad intentions. However it was the way that it went from ‘someone stabbing people on a train’ to ‘bomb anyone trying to cross the channel in a small boat’ before there was one single scrap of information.

Sylvie56 · 04/11/2025 15:32

Randomlygeneratedname · 03/11/2025 11:04

I didn't see the threads and I didn't partake in guessing anything about he attackers. Like the poster above, I can imagine what was said so there's no point finding the threads just to be offended.

I don't understand why this isn't an act of terror though. Why do the people have to be from a different place / certain religion for it to be terrorism. In my opinion an act of terror should something which makes people scared to live their normal lives. Getting on a train is as normal as it gets really and now people have to worry about mass stabbings. No idea what the answer is but I can almost guarantee, somewhere down the line, the internet is to blame.

There's a very specific definition of Terrorism in the Terrorism Act 2007 (right at the start so an easy google find). It doesn't fit that definition, and to use it would potentially muddy the waters and be seen as potentially influencing a legal case due to the high profile nature of this. Same as how the Liverpool car ramming guy was also not found to be terrorist related.

AhWeNoss · 04/11/2025 14:36

So because I’m not actually assuming he is a Muslim himself just because his name sounds his heritage would be, that would gather screams of racism.

No, you’ve lost me. Your point makes no sense and you’re clearly looking to argue something by looking at posts through very narrow lens.

You said this in case you have forgotten.

Yet the train worker who tried to save others and was left fighting for his life has a Muslim sounding name.
The racists and Muslim haters must be losing their minds. Not only was the attacker not a Muslim immigrant, it was a Muslim who risked himself to save other passengers.

You clearly have assumed he was a Muslim and tried to use that to sow division. In the second paragraph of your post.

To understand my point, just imagine yourself reacting to someone saying that the knife man had a ‘Muslim sounding name’ and then went onto assume he was a Muslim.

BundleBoogie · 04/11/2025 15:16

WonderfulSmith · 04/11/2025 12:42

It’s not about who actually did it, or that they could have been any race or religion. The problem with the threads on the night was that people were jumping to the conclusion that the perpetrators had to be ‘boat people’ and saying that we need to crack down on small boat crossings etc. This was based on nothing but the first scraps of information.

There are known terrorists among the boat people though. One was caught after raping a woman in Hyde Park. He was from Egypt.

We would be stupid not to be open to the possibility. Oh wait…

mbosnz · 04/11/2025 12:28

To assume that the feared terrorist attack was therefore likely to have been carried out by a Muslim, would be racist.

It could just as likely have been carried out by a far right perpetrator, likely a non-Muslim.

No. It’s statistically far less likely to have been carried out by a ‘far right’ perpetrator. The vast majority of terrorist attacks in the last 20 years have been by Islamic extremists.

Go and look at MI5 and google terrorist attacks if you don’t believe me.

SingtotheCat · 04/11/2025 15:00

I don’t know where my head is at with half the country going mad about immigration and race. If found myself feeling slightly glad that the suspect has an English sounding name so that they can’t jump on that band wagon.

AhWeNoss · 04/11/2025 14:36

BundleBoogie · 04/11/2025 13:31

This amused me. Muslim sounding name.

You are using a mass stereotype of the sort that would gather screams of racism if used in any other way. This is looking like a one way street.

You have a very twisted view. That is an awful thing to say.

You’re either projecting massively (from observations on these threads some of the self proclaimed ‘anti racist’ are extremely racist when it suits them) or are desperate to fuel tension and division with your inflammatory remarks.

Do you know what would make me happiest - if there were no Islamic terrorists, no Pakistani Muslim grooming gangs, no terrorists, rapists and murderers entering our country illegally (remember I am not saying all Muslims or boat people). We’ve got plenty of our own shit to deal with.

I am really pleased we are hosting the female Afghani lawyers and their families that JK Rowling secretly funded. I was pleased to donate to Baroness Nicholson’s fund for the Yazidi girls still held as sex slaves and their population subjected to genocide. We need to help the people that need it. We will not be in a position to do that for much longer if we can’t secure our borders.

Moderate, Britain loving Muslims are trying to raise the alarm on this. They don’t want the extremists to come here and be welcomed by ‘well meaning’ but utterly ill informed people. Posters on here have described what happened in their country and how they came here to get away from what is now being done.

They get ignored on threads like this though - must be the wrong type of Muslim voices.

That’s the general gist I am getting, that certain “anti racist” posters are extremely racists when it suits them or are desperate to fuel tension or divide with their inflammatory remarks.

No I didn’t.

I get called racist for sharing links to the Mayor of London website and stats on terrorist attacks, I’m not going to get into speculating on names.

Oh well, someone published a whole list of names of previous , specifically mass stabbing, incidents and invited us to draw comparison through names, inviting the interpretation that even as the man was black he'd almost certainly have a name identifying him as Muslim.

How disappointed they must be.

Oh where has that been posted then.
Personally I think there are 3 people who deserve the George Cross for their brave actions that night. This man, the football supporter who stepped forward to stop the children being stabbed and the quick thinking train driver.

BundleBoogie · 04/11/2025 13:19

Yes. These girls and their families have literally been to hell and back and are still being failed by those supposed to protect them. They have been silenced by people calling them racist for literally reporting what happened to them and PP is worried that describing these female children as little girls is unnecessarily inflammatory!

This mind blowing claim has been bothering me all morning. What has happened to the humanity of people?

I request that anyone with an opinion on the ‘inflammatory’ nature of calling a female child age 10+ a little girl should read some of the survivor accounts from these girls and then come back to us and consider how they have contributed to the atmosphere that allowed those crimes to happen.

This mind blowing claim has been bothering me all morning. What has happened to the humanity of people?

It is mind blowing indeed those girls in Rotherham and other areas were totally dehumanised by the very people who should have been protecting them.

And now it is more important to protect the perpetrators' identity seemingly , than acknowledge that these were white children and they were victims.

And the virtue signallers think it is racist to even talk about it giving the men involved victim status rather than the actual victims.

Disgusting.

I agree with you, I have read some accounts of the survivors.
And yet still people on here are trying to dismiss them.

The racists are likely to be very annoyed that the hero rail worker who was left fighting for his life after trying to protect passengers has a very Muslim sounding name.

Terrorism means there is an ideological aim, committing violence to further a political goal or influence people's behaviours to that end. A mass stabbing spree isn't terrorism unless the person comes out and states they did it to try influence the government or intimidate the public to further a political, religious or ideological cause.

Mass violence with no ideological 'reason' is just that, violence.

There was a lot of confusion and uncertainty around Rudakabana on this issue, with people wondering why he hadn't been referred to PREVENT. Because he hadn't disclosed an ideological cause to anyone regarding the horrors he carried out.
