To insist on coat or blanket from car seat to house with 6 month baby?

It’s 7°C outside and DS (6 months) needed to go from house to car, about 20 metres. He was wearing a cotton bodysuit/onesie with no vest underneath.

I thought he needed a coat/blanket and hat even for that short distance, especially as he’s just getting over a chest infection.

DH thought it was fine for such a short trip and that I was being over the top. He took DS out as he was- no hat, no coat, no blanket.

Am I being overprotective? Do babies really need full outdoor clothing for literally 30 seconds outside? Or is it important even for very short distances?

Is this something worth insisting on or am I overthinking it?

Sorry to clarify, I didn’t expect a coat on in the car seat but once the car was stationary either a coat OR a blanket

@Runklebecause he had soiled the one he had on and I didn’t have a spare

Yes, enormously over the top. Carry your ds in your arms and he will be warm enough for 20 metres.

Springbaby2023 · 02/11/2025 22:09

no harm in having a blanket in the car to chuck on but equally fine without. No coats in car seats!!

Runkle · 02/11/2025 22:09

Why didn't he have a vest on? The rule of thumb is putting an extra layer on them to what we have on. Additionally, you would have to take the coat back off again to put him into he car seat so even longer in the cold. Next time, vest and cardi if you're worried.

vitalityvix · 02/11/2025 22:08

He doesn’t need a coat or blanket to be carried that distance.

ohbygolly · 02/11/2025 22:07

I'm with you. I'd have popped a hat on quickly, and put a folded blanket over the car seat.
Blanket and hat are then easy to whip off once in the car.

FurForksSake · 02/11/2025 22:07

The time spent faffing getting him out of the car seat and into a coat / hat / blanket would be far longer than the walk between the two.

Coats must not be worn in car seats as has been above.

Owly11 · 02/11/2025 22:07

Yes you are being way overprotective. What on earth do you think is going to happen? We are warm blooded creatures - that means we can adjust to hot and cold temperatures and it is good to do so.

devildeepbluesea · 02/11/2025 22:05

Seriously?

mamagogo1 · 02/11/2025 22:05

Fine without down colder than that.

FurForksSake · 02/11/2025 22:05

you are being overly anxious, warm car to warm house with 30 seconds in chilly but not freezing temps is fine.

Butterflywings84 · 02/11/2025 22:05

It’s fine not to wrap them up for that journey but were they just going to be put in the car seat like that? Was there a blanket or something there as presumably the car would also be quite chilly to start with. You can get these great star blankets which are super easy to pop the baby in and could also stay on them in the car seat too - a lot easier than faffing around with coats and all in ones

BendingSpoons · 02/11/2025 22:04

Presumably your DH was holding your DC close to his chest, so that would keep DC warm. I wouldn't worry for a few metres.

Okiedokie123 · 02/11/2025 22:04

Aren’t coats a bad idea for babies in car seats?
Id put a blanket on him and maybe a hat - because it’s not just the walk to the car, it’s also cold in the car, especially initially. It takes seconds to bung a blanket on. If you’ve got one with car seat “holes” even better.

Cheepcheepcheep · 02/11/2025 22:03

Honestly for less than a minute I never bothered. They won’t freeze if they’re going from warm car to warm house.

Greggsit · 02/11/2025 22:03

Of course it was fine. It was literally seconds. Babies are tougher than you think, otherwise the species would have died out long ago.

Maybeishouldcrochet · 02/11/2025 22:02

Well coats are dangerous in car seats... He could pop a blanket over- but again unnecessary from going from a warm house to a car

Redpeach · 02/11/2025 22:01

Its fine for short trio

Bigtreeesss · 02/11/2025 22:01

It’s 30 seconds it would take longer to faff with a coat or blanket
