The racism on the Huntingdon train threads is appaling

Just as the title says. The blatant racism and jumping to conclusions on the threads has been terrible. Mumsnet used to be a more informed intelligent place.

There was a thread posted a few weeks ago decrying summer internships that try to improve diversity in some workplaces. The general theme was, ‘My white son can’t get a place so these schemes are bad and need to be abolished’. Do we want people from deprived communities to see these jobs as realistic options, reducing involvement in drug dealing and crime in general, or do we want to keep them as an underclass we can look down on and complain about?

White people live in deprived communities too. Why shouldn’t their white sons (and daughters) have access to internships to help improve their situation?

They should. Diversity isn’t restricted to ethnic diversity. Those schemes try to attract people from more deprived backgrounds too. Those complaining are from more middle class backgrounds. They say the schemes don’t pick up enough white working class boys and favour ethnic minorities so they should be abolished.

So the end result will be the maintenance of the status quo. White middle class people who come from high-achieving backgrounds will get most of the places. Some posters pointing out that there are usually a number of these internship schemes at the companies that offer them didn’t seem to convince these mums that their sons still have sufficient opportunity to get good jobs if they are good enough. You have at least one scheme that’s open to everyone and then others that target specific groups.

How can politicians make everyone safer?

There have been some horrendous attacks and people would like to see better protection against that.

I don’t know how they can make us safer from acts committed by mentally ill people (which are, luckily) very rare. We will learn as more comes out about Huntington.

Also what we CANNOT do is lump everything together. Gang violence and acts by the mentally ill are very different . People lumping them in together are being lazy and not helping.

The Metropolitan Police's "Gangs Matrix" (now the Gang Violence Matrix or GVM),

In Oct 2020, it showed 79.5% African-Caribbean, 9.9% White European, 5.1% Asian, and 2.3% Arabian/Egyptian.

This has been fairly consistent since the early 2000s.

That extreme proportion is not explained away by ‘deprivation’. That will play a part but other factors will be in play.

London hosts the largest population of Jamaicans in London. The Yardies and other Jamaican and black drug gangs are known for their violence. We should not be accepting these levels of violence.

Why are you confusing “Jamaicans”’with being British of various Caribbean and or African heritage.

What does “London hosts the largest population of Jamaicans in London” mean?

And what does the presences of Jamaicans in London have to do with the Gang violence matrix? Is your argument that most gang members are Jamaican nationals?

And what does any of this have to do with a mentally ill man on a train?

Also “Yardies”??? They have not been a things since the 90s.

Here you go. It’s actually worse at 61% black perpetrators for 13% population. That doesn’t include any other means of murder.

From the Mayor of London:

10 February 2022
In this section
Despite making up only 13% of London’s total population, black Londoners account for 45% of London’s knife murder victims, 61% of knife murder perpetrators and 53% of knife crime perpetrators.

Why don’t you go and look - I always learn so much when I go and research something myself. I’ve got some painting to do.

I did. Which is why I know it’s a trope regurgitated from the USA and there is no source for the screenshot. But it is on people to provide source for their claims. Not post misinformation and tell other people to “go look”.

My post was aimed at the person posting a fake screenshot and I asked where it was from. You decided to butt in and did a poor job of it.

If a scheme is designed to counteract deprivation as PP mentioned, it is not ok to exclude anyone on the basis of the colour of their skin. White kids suffer from deprivation as do other ethnicities.

If there was a football initiative only aimed at white boys to improve the ‘diversity’ of football would you have an issue with it?

Do you realise that barring someone based on the colour of their skin is unlawful discrimination?

Comparing racial discrimination to the need for female only groups or initiatives to address sex inequality is a trans activist argument.

The exact same can be said of schemes that target girls. The poster you referred to also had an issue with that. You should probably go and find the original post. You are making a fool of yourself. The poster also had an issue with schemes targetting working class people.

I have zero problem with schemes aimed at ethnic minorities for the same reason I have zero issue with schemes aimed at working class people for the same reason I have zero issue with schemes targetting just girls (or even just boys.) I am consistent. You are not.

Nice try but “knife murders” and “murders” are not the same thing.

The claim was “13% of the population commit 50% of murders”.

Murders by knife crime is one subset of murders. I want the data for the specific claim in the screenshot.

The popular one doing the rounds on Social Media this morning is
"If a pig is born in a stable it doesn't make it a horse"
Absolutely vile
My DH was born in another country and has dual nationality but as he is white I am sure the racists would consider him a "horse"

That's vile indeed and am sorry.

It would also apply to me. White, born overseas and spent my childhood in different countries, countries that people on here and other social media/Farage fans would readily condemn. Their perception has little to do with reality. Having travelled for work too was so interesting and enjoyed as an adult in my career.

I like to think that are better for it, people who have seen a little of the world and not small minded bigots who've only ever been to pepsi-cola strip in Benidorm to burn, get drunk and to only eat pie and chips with other British people.

Yes it sounds reasonable to me to have schemes aimed at certain underrepresented ethnic groups for the same reason it’s reasonable to have schemes aimed at underrepresented sex groups

The posted being referred to, in fairness objected to all the above as she felt it adversely impacted her son.

Why are you opposed to the former but not the latter?

Why are you so fixated on ‘mass protest’ as a means of communication?

That is generally a last resort when the public feels that the government aren’t listening.

As I said, most of the Catholic perpetrators are dead or in prison so what good will ‘mass protest’ do? There was widespread revulsion and the Catholic Church is now generally held up almost as a synonym for paedophiles and has forever lost its reputation and much of its influence.

Again, the white grooming gangs when uncovered are prosecuted. Due process is occurring - no protests are required.

The Pakistani grooming gangs however, were not being prosecuted. The authorities and communities were covering up and aiding and abetting them. They still are - Jess Phillips appears to be so beholden to her 45% Muslim constituents that she is trying to water down the inquiry designed to obtain justice after many years of the girls being told they were racist by people trying to shut them up.

Just own the fact that your rather nasty attempt at a slur on the general public that our outrage is selective and racially motivated has failed.

Your post as a reminder.

People have 'forgotten' that though.
I've not seen any mass protests outside of churches through child abuse, or the outrage on white grooming gangs. The outrage is selective, more is the pity.

You're nothing but a gaslighter.

JHound · 03/11/2025 10:47

Also MN has clear content rules on “misinformation”.

Yet posts containing misinformation, are not removed. Why is MN not applying its own rules consistently?

Crikeyalmighty · 03/11/2025 10:47

@EvangelicalAboutButteredToast this is absolutely nothing to do with the current government - they have been put in an impossible position and it was always going to be the case. it is the result of the last 15 years of disordered thinking around tax and spending, Brexit ( cost the country£400 billion so far) very poor controls of spending around Covid - the way benefits work meaning that for many average and low income families, especially with children and renting, work almost doesn’t pay, we think it’s actually normal to try and attach conditions to yourself or children to ‘get more money from the state’ - all basically leaving the country skint - all that propping up by the EU and doing up of certain areas - not happening any more. Flood the country with 3rd world families for a few years, yep that was the Tory’s too 2021 to 2024 - rise in all the small boats situation- yep that was the Tory’s too related to Brexit - and please note Reform is now full of the very same idiots who brought you these policies. Very ambitious fucktards basically , policies on back of a fag packet, concerned only for themselves. The UK has a particularly bad combination of factors that are contributing to a lot of general problems - ridiculous electoral system, tax too low, services not good enough,Brexit , far too much previous privatisation, a celebration of the stupid and an over inflated sense of our own self importance these days in the world. Nowhere is perfect and everywhere is suffering somewhat from changes in the world order, Trumps ludicrous posturing and wars etc - but here I think we have the perfect maelstrom

The relation between poverty and crime is not so clear cut. Being poor does not cause you to become a criminal, plenty of groups experience systemic poverty but are not excessively violent.

It is indeed clear cut.
Poverty can lead to crime. I didn't say it always will, but it can and does.

Can you link to a source? “50% of murrders committed by 13 of the population” is word for word a claim made in the USA - the UK has a very different demographic make-up so, no screenshots, do you have a link that shows who “13%” of the London population is and that they “commit 50% of murders?”

PPs implication that it’s ok to exclude white youngsters from schemes to address deprivation for no reason other than they are white. Does that honestly sound reasonable to you?

I put daughters in brackets as PPs post only mentioned sons but as girls are also victims of deprivation it seemed as odd an exclusion as white kids.

I think it was a term coined a few years ago by trans activists who hated the idea of women talking in public about our rights. Trans activists use it frequently to denigrate women.

Thank you yes, I can see that. It’s self defeating to use it about a site we’re all using.

Checkcheckout · 03/11/2025 10:42

It’s terrifying that overt racism seems to have become acceptable on social media, including MN of all places.

I am feeling ashamed to be white British right now. White privilege was always a thing, but never more so than now with the hate against anyone who isn’t white spiralling. This should not be happening in 2025.

Unfortunately, as Orwell said, ignorance is power
