The racism on the Huntingdon train threads is appaling

Just as the title says. The blatant racism and jumping to conclusions on the threads has been terrible. Mumsnet used to be a more informed intelligent place.

You’ll say it’s racist. You cannot say it’s untrue.

What I can say is that in relation to the Huntingdon stabbings, what we had was:

  • Immediate assumptions that the perpetrator(s) must be foreign or asylum seekers. No evidence to back that up, no restraint in order to let the police do their job. That is racist.
  • Then when it became clear that the perpetrator was British born, endless suggestions that he could not be really British , because he was black and his family might not have been here since 1066. Again, speculation with nothing to back it up, stirring division before the police could do their job. That is racist.

The wider link between ethnicity, poverty and crime is indeed complex. It is not nonexistent. But that is not what these threads have been about.

It is indisputable that many posters on the threads about the Huntingdon stabbings specifically have been deeply racist.

RingoJuice · 04/11/2025 15:01

The actual facts are not with you. We already know the ethnic breakdown of violence in many countries.

Someone upthread linked murder by knife statistics in London, eerily close to the American stat where 13% of the population commits 55% of the murders.

Frankly, if someone is stabbing you and intends to kill you, does it matter if it’s because they have a mental illness or just a violent misogynist? It matters not to me, what matters is the personal safety of myself and my family.

Its very much untrue.

As shown in the Train attack, not terrorism, not a gang attack, most likely MH.

& the guy who saves many, at huge risk to himself, is an Algerian and a Muslim.

I suggest you deal with your own issues rather than have ago at the UK.

Ireolu · 04/11/2025 14:47

The man that saved several people on the train whilst doing his job is Algerian & Muslim.

I wonder how the racists will process that one. I wish him well and pray for his speedy recovery.

Thing is, the racists on these threads will learn nothing, feel no shame, hold fast to their disgusting beliefs and then when the next thing happens, they'll just do it all again.

You’ll say it’s racist. You cannot say it’s untrue.

Notagain75 · 04/11/2025 12:34

And what reality is that?

You are literally importing people with a higher tendency towards violence. Look at the per capita murder rate of the various Caribbean islands, it’s actually horrific. You think these tendencies just stop when crossing borders?

You are learning that it doesn’t.

Let's hope he doesn't have ILR so Reform can deport him.

A foreign name means nothing. I have a foreign maiden name because my F was Czech. My DM (who is British) and DB still go by that name and, as far as I know, haven’t faced any issues because of it. (We did when I was a child in the 70s and 80s, though, during the Cold War.)

Of course it’s possible that he’s an immigrant, we don’t know, but he’s clearly been in this country for many years. And he’s white, so the racists will most likely leave him alone. Besides, he’s a hero, with there being calls for him to be awarded the George Cross. So they wouldn’t dare to say anything even if they would in other circumstances.

It’s the least of his family’s worries right now, he’s still critical but stable in hospital. We can only hope that he pulls through to receive any award himself.

NotaTastyVegan · 04/11/2025 13:24

Racism feels like a broken relationship — except it’s as if all Black, Brown, Jewish, Muslim, immigrant, or “forrin” people are seen as one person. No matter what any individual does, people can’t seem to differentiate.
You can do a thousand good things, but the one bad thing someone from your community does — that’s what gets noticed. That’s what defines everyone else.

There are thousands upon thousands of people from these communities living peacefully, contributing quietly, and doing good every single day. But the focus is on the “crazies” — not the complex geopolitical, historical, mental, or social issues behind them. somehow, the blame always falls on everyone who looks like them.

My best friend’s family fall into three of those categories. She and her husband grew up in Sweden (guess which three!) and now live here for work.

She told me she’s scared to go out on her own. I was shocked to hear that — she’s one of the kindest, gentlest people I know, and both of them work in deeply compassionate professions.

But who cares, right? We’re all “awful” and will never be British — apparently because we carry violence or hatred in our blood, our culture, our history… maybe even our DNA or melanin??

We’re supposedly “poisoning” a British society that was, of course, so peaceful and perfect before us.
You can’t make someone love you if they choose to hate you and only focus on the bad.
If someone’s agenda is hate, they’ll always find something to justify it

Of course British/white/Christians commit crimes, but generally not this type of crime in Britian.

If we pretend that there isn't a problem with radicalisation we can't tackle it. The bona fides of the poster you're replying to may be suspect, but surely most of us wonder about why an attack like this happens. In recent years in Western Europe, this type of crime has be carried out by radical Islamists.

I worried that it might have been an Islamic fundamentalist, simply because of the nature of the crime, and I worried because it gives a field day to anti-Muslim sentiment.

I don't think this makes me racist.

We know nothing about the perpetrator other than he was British and black. There was no indication that it was a terror attack.
My first thought was it was someone going through a psychotic episode.
Jumping to conclusions makes the situation much worse

bombastix · 04/11/2025 12:18

Oh look. It’s almost as if racists and xenophobia don’t care about facts and pretend that their attitudes are justified.

Yuck. Whatever happened to treat others as you yourself would be treated?

Notagain75 · 04/11/2025 12:14

I hate what we seem to have become in this country. The racist rhetoric from political figures has made people feel they can publicly air their vile views . It started with Brexit and has just got worse since.
I wonder what the racists think about the hero guard Zamir Satouni who saved a lot of lives and was seriously injured in the process .

FuckRealityBringMeABook · 04/11/2025 12:08

Samir Zitouni. What a fucking hero. Suck on that, Farage.

So your next door neighbour gets bitten by a dog so we kill all the dogs. Love your logic, love your reality. Jokes.

Well, I’ll tell you I wouldn’t be owning a dog like an XL bully/pit bull. So there’s that

So it turns out the LNER worker who heroically stopped more people being harmed has a “forrin” name.

Whatever will the racists do now…

Omg do you not have internet access?

Here you go.

“There are an estimated 800,000 people of Jamaican origin in the UK, with the largest communities concentrated in London and the West Midlands
London is home to approximately 250,000 people of Jamaican descent, and the West Midlands has the second-largest population, with around 45,000 individuals. “

I linked to the gang crime matrix earlier. You can check that.

Also “Yardies”??? They have not been a things since the 90s.

DDs acquaintance would beg to differ. He is a Yardie. Nice chap. Don’t try and erase his existence. They are very much still active. They’ve even spread their business activities to Ireland. Article from 2023.

This is what I mean about looking for yourself. You find out information. Now I know that not only are Yardies active in London (the guy we know is pretty much retired though) but they are moving into new areas. Fascinating.

It’s true that they’ve not released American figures since the Summer of Floyd. So the ratio is probably worse in all honesty. We are basing the 13/55 off 2019 releases, before some of the worst ideas about policing and incarceration (or lack thereof) took off.

I wasn't just talking about crime figures.

RingoJuice · 03/11/2025 15:30

Well, if we're on the subject of government transparency, yours is living in a glass house and shouldn't throw stones.

The American figure is a real statistic though. I have no idea about the corresponding UK figure. Doubt your government would release such ‘dangerous’ information. As if that fixes anything.

The London figure I provided is from the Mayor of Londons website so pretty reliable. Facts get in the way of some people’s narrative sometimes though.
