Why do people put their Xmas trees etc up now then take them down Boxing Day

If they say that they are sick n tired of the sight of them or find it difficult to clean around them.

Don’t put the tree up early then!

Makes no sense to.me but each to their own.

cottonwoolie · 01/11/2025 13:28

Why do you care so much? I genuinely don't care what other people do with their Christmas trees. These posts confuse me every year.

Well you clearly care about why others care about when you take your tree down...

Wiltedgeranium · 01/11/2025 13:27

Ours always went up too late for my liking- 17-19 Dec.
Mine goes up around 10th but comes down on nyday. I'm usually back in work by 6th, so it's depressing.
Dd would like it up in November.

I am looking forward to when the kids have left home and I don't need to bother at all. I just don't see the point. None of us are religious. What are we decorating for? If we're doing it properly and celebrating the return of the light, then I'll bring in branches.

No, I replied to a poster saying you have no idea of what goes on other lives. The context of my reply was just because someone works or divorced it's not a given the tree has to come down on a day later. And if you don't know anyone who takes a tree down on boxing day doesn't mean you don't know anyone who has different circumstances.

MossAndLeaves · 01/11/2025 13:26

Probably because they enjoy the build up to Christmas more than being festive after Christmas.

Lavenderandbrown · 01/11/2025 13:24

I do think Christmas fatigue is a real thing.

Op I too think what????when my neighbor put her tree up in November (before USA thanksgiving a big holiday unto itself) and than tree down on 12/26 and complained she was sick of it. Do I care? Not really but I notice.

there seems to be a fevered pitch here in the USA for Christmas decor. Stores like Homegoods and TJMaxx and Marshall’s (the trifecta) which have uk equivalents are so very overstocked with Christmas and it’s all big in size and big in volume. Not one “perfect for me” nutcracker but rather 200. Hundreds of rolls of gift wrap already. All this long before Halloween/ 10/31. Ornaments and trees of every style and alot of pink this year.
I put my tree up late November preferably after thanksgiving but since it’s late this year my tree will be up prior to the holiday. I leave it up until New Year’s Day or few days after. It does seem Christmas is over by then everywhere you look and it’s only still Christmas in your home if you have the tree up.

if I didnt host the holiday/ work FT out of my home/ have 2 dc and one elderly parent I would wait until Dec 1but alas it’s too much to do in too little time and while everyone enjoys it I feel I get little down time to enjoy it so earlier/ longer is better.

consumerism has just about ruined Christmas I fear. I’m hoping we get a pendulum swing back to simpler more seasonal and less prefabricated and now needs to be stored
stuff.

Boxing day is not later people have more then one family which is why people celebrate Christmas day and boxing day

Later than them

Do they get annoyed and take it as a personal slight because your tree isn't up in November?

SlashBeef · 01/11/2025 13:22

I take mine down the day after boxing day but I don't put it up until well into December either. Why do you care so much? I genuinely don't care what other people do with their Christmas trees. These posts confuse me every year.

So don't invite them over?

Maybe they get annoyed because you're doing it later than them 🤷🏽‍♀️

I haven't argued people don't make difference choices or can't make them...

No but you questioned why they make those choices because you can't understand their reasoning.

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 01/11/2025 12:24

Because they are fucking bonkers.

This

MermaidMummy06 · 01/11/2025 13:21

Our goes up as early as DD can convince DH to put it up, which isn't until December.

It comes down as soon after Christmas as we can manage, as we don't have time by new years as work etc goes back and the crazy continues.

Because I'm just commenting on the people I personally know and it irrationally annoys me. Its usually people who get excited to early and can't wait so put them up in November and then are sick of it by Christmas evening or boxing day morning and take them all down. Why the rest of us are still celebrating Christmas. Its very annoying when you are still celebrating Christmas and you have family and friends round and they've spent the morning taking the decorations and stating how Christmas is over now and your still there trying to make it festive still handing out presents making a 2nd Christmas dinner and have Christmas music playing and have organised Christmas games. And they cant even be arsed to wear their Christmas jumpers that they have been wearing this November as Christmas is over.

So don't invite them over?

Maybe they get annoyed because you're doing it later than them 🤷🏽‍♀️

ConnieHeart · 01/11/2025 13:11

I think this isn't helped by adverts for post Christmas sales come on tv & social media on Christmas Day. You hardly hear any Christmas music played after CD & Boxing Day onwards everyone is saying "did you have a nice Christmas?" When it still is Christmas!

Don't even get me started on the people who drag their kids around the shops and supermarkets boxing day

frozendaisy · 01/11/2025 13:19

Our NDN has had her tree up a week already.

cottonwoolie · 01/11/2025 13:19

Christmas now is more about advent - the build up, with the event culminating on the 25th Dec.

I don't think that's true at all

By 3/4 January we are all back to work and school and the whole thing is a distant memory.

Says who? Dates change. My dc are back on the 6th this year (3rd & 5th are a weekend for one).

Some on this thread have their idea of what's normal and declare everyone else as being a weirdo, it's pretty ridiculous really.

I know people who are separated (my own parents are), my DH works over Christmas as do some of my friends, people who celebrate later, etc That's all normal, not sure why you have to pack away the tree a day or so after because of those things though.

Because different people make different choices.

It's not a hard concept.

Funnily enough I never see those of us who put our trees up earlier and take them down earlier mocking those who do it differently, the mockery only flows one way.

youalright · 01/11/2025 13:17

AliceTheCamelHasTheHumpSoGoAliceGoBomBomBom · 01/11/2025 13:10

Exactly, other people have different lives, jobs, commitments, so do things differently.

You have no idea if its even most people who are done with the festivities and have had gifts and eaten all the food etc. I know plenty of families who can't do their Christmas things until January, and ones who do it all in November. People who work, separated parents who do two Christmases, people who's family live away, bereaved people who don't want Christmas on the 25th so do it on a different day, there's a million reasons why people do things earlier or later.

TheLivelyRose · 01/11/2025 13:16

Contrary to popular belief, Christmas starts on the 25th and the Christmas season actually continues right through to Candlemas on 2 February. There's no reason to take your decorations down before the second of february. No, reason to put them up before Christmas Eve.

Anything before Christmas Day is advent.

But then most people don't look at christmas with any meaning. It's just a grab bag for presents and too much food.

Parker231 · 01/11/2025 13:15

ConnieHeart · 01/11/2025 13:05

It is still Christmas then

Every one has different opinions and traditions - there isn’t a right or wrong - it’s up to individual families. Is that a problem?

cottonwoolie · 01/11/2025 13:14

@Cat1504 how does your tree create such a mess?

I do get confused by how many people need to get clean & tidy. How does a tree stop this?

🙄

Beon · 01/11/2025 12:37

Have friends and family who put their tree up first week in November. Moan about it then BD, it’s all put away.

if they put it up later, no moaning

We don’t put ours up until Sinkerklaas at the earliest but it is always without fail down before NY - Christmas is over then.
