You have obviously been ramming it down people throats and not pulling it off as a "joke" and your sister has been the first to crack.

Ok, it's tedious. But if it's once a year, and you love him, and he's a good person, is it worth hurting his feelings over it and suggesting everyone has been laughing at him behind his back for years about it?

I understand why people think the "joke" has worn thin. It's not original, so probably wasn't a side-splitter the first time OP used it. Over time it has gone from mildly funny, to not funny, to irritating.

A friend of mine, who in every other way is a kind and likeable person (but not a good comedian), has an annoying habit when travelling in a car.

When approaching a village, town, or county "welcome to" sign, he will announce in a pompous announcer kind of voice, "Here we are in sunny whatever the place is called". It wasn't even funny the first time and is often an unnecessary interruption in whatever conversation might be taking place.

It seems to be a verbal tick he just can't control though, because even he doesn't seem particularly amused by it.

My FIL does this but he often says the correct word first then tracks back and repeats himself but with his wrong word in place. It’s so annoying. He’s not a child, he’s a grown man ffs.

Also Team OP here, having lived a few years at "The Goth Mansion" which claimed its moniker because we were / are Goths and its official name of "The Cottage" didn't really fit.

It had been a Cottage, second home to Victorian gentry allegedly, and was more like a two bed detached, but by the time we got to rent it, it was cheap, dilapidated, planning permission had been granted for demolition, and it had a very dodgy extension tacked onto the side, and electrics that could only be described as "quirky".

I don't think it was even us who coined it, but it stuck and friends often remember happy times there, especially since DP died.

What strikes me about the OPs post is that as an annoyance, in the grand scheme of things, the people bitchily carping about it obviously aren't very pleasant, and it does come across as bullying. It's not harming anyone, and even when I find things irritating about people I love, I wouldn't dream of nit picking them, especially when it's nothing harmful in the least.

As for all the comments about people being try hard or up themselves, so what? If everyone was the same the world would be very boring. I think there are some people who would like nothing better than to submit to the Borg.

I think they mean Amanda from Motherland. To be fair I don’t think Amanda would call her house Whatever Towers because she sees herself as impossibly sophisticated. She wouldn’t make a joke around her house.

Ok, but so what? David Brent wasn't a twat because he had a pet name for something that he liked to use to please himself. He was a twat because he was always trying to impress everyone and being totally awkward, insincere contrived and performative about it.

OP's just got a nickname for her home that she likes to use. She doesn't even think about it unless people suddenly attack her for it.

It’s just a collective term implying everyone in the household. Shorthand in a mock self deprecating way. Yes you could make an anagram of it cf Fawlty towers. That’s if you ever invite them to anything ever again…you sound happy and generous that can be very annoying to people.
Or even better you could face them out so at the next gathering the towers have invited them to you could say to their faces , ‘Imagine I never knew you were laughing at me behind my back. But I do now. Help yourselves’ oh I know you won’t, but they do deserve it. Only parasites mock their hosts.
