I’m seeing it all over social media. Has Trump stopped the equivalent of benefits?

Can someone explain please?

Omg why is formula so expensive over there?!

Because capitalism 🤷🏻‍♀️🫠

The formula companies know that there’s no protected maternity leave policies for mothers. So most women don’t have adequate time to establish breastfeeding or maintain a supply….so most mothers here will end up using formula at some point.
The formula companies capitalise hugely on that.

Sorry I haven’t read the whole thread but I was wondering yesterday if school meals are affected? Presumably teachers aren’t getting paid? Or is that paid at a state level?
are school support staff and then if children would usually get free school lunch will that also go?

School meals are state level budgeting.

Some states have a free school meals program for all students regardless of income.

In other states it depends on the school/school district - my children’s school district kept their free school meals initiative this year, so all students regardless of income get at least lunch at school. My children’s school have maintained breakfast and lunch for all students.

I have been looking on youtube at some of this omg.

Some need comdoms birth control and stop popping out kids.
sad part is some of these parents are scamming to get it and taking away from people that really do need the help.
Some women are saying they are going looting and will choose violence and rob homes. (good parenting that)

Its got to a point where others have had enough of paying the price for others.
Its like the uk in a way so many people claiming for sen kids when tbh their is nothing wrong with them.
It takes away the help and makes it harder for the ones that really need it.
So many rely on a system that can cut you off in one click.

Im sure it will all be sorted out but its us little people that have to pay to clean up the mess with bigger tax rises.

If you had any idea of the resources (time, money, education level, effort) it takes to get SEN support for a child in the UK, you would not be spreading these untruths. Unless you are a malicious provocateur that is.

I have lived it, I continue to live it, and my child is not in receipt of any benefits - unless you consider his state school education a benefit.

It might be worth you sourcing your news and information from fact checked sources rather than from Youtube.

It is unusual for this length of time, it’s disingenuous to suggest it’s not. It’s also unusual that the Trump administration is holding low income people hostage from a food perspective when there are congressional funds available. The rhetoric the republicans are spouting on the reasons why are outright lies. The Trump administration's overall behaviour is outrightly not the norm and you should be well aware of that. FFS.

I am aware and the FFS is completely unwarranted and frankly rude. Yes the length of time is unusual but the rest isn’t. I’m no fan of Trump and FULLY aware of the political situation. But the budget not being approved isn’t unusual.

I think part of the issue is media and I’m sure it’s no different in the US- take the example of the story re Rachel Reeves- a non story if ever I saw one- yep her agents cocked up but it’s not exactly big league stuff - whereas the story about Farages partner buying a house with money from the back of the sofa, the Tory’s endless stories of millions written off or hidden on business things, huge amounts given to knock offs in ‘contracts’ ( hello Boris Johnson) -savid javids business antics - Sunaks wife’s involvement with companies taking large amounts from the Covid loan scheme and then liquidating them quite quickly - all get brushed under the carpet by the mail , express , even BBc etc - anything involving labour - they bang on about it for weeks - thing is many ( not all but I would say vast majority) of over 70s in particular aren’t on blue sky, Twitter, reading private eye etc - they do get their info from Mail, express, BBC news. So are often oblivious to what’s not reported in those places. Take as an example the very positive rulings this week regards renters- very little reported on it by any of these sources. In fact anything Labour do that is positive- simply not reported or done on a ‘hide it away’ kind of way - these sources have gone from being ‘news reporters ‘ to agenda setters designed to appeal to a particular demographic - and to show how cynical it all is the owners of the Express also own the Daily Mirror - who of course are reporting the opposite agenda- I’m sure the US is very similar if not worse. To be frank if Donny’s tariffs are so mega mega successful, why does he need to be tinkering with stopping/cutting healthcare etc - the US likes to give off the mega successful image to the world but you only have to go there ( and I’ve been a lot) to say a lot of it is a run down behind the times dump mass illusion fuelled by huge debt - personal and state and ludicrous numbers of people on public service jobs propping up the economy and large parts of the population doing nicely going round screwing each other for every penny, be that medical, dental, an awful lot of things involving ‘services ‘ - as an example we needed to get a guy out to do some filming of an interview, nothing negative skilled, one man and his video camera kind of thing - 1850 dollars for a mornings work , maybe 2 hours tidying up on editing and a 20 minute drive - could have done this in UK for £500 quite easily- there are lots of things I like in the US and if you are doing well it can be a good lifestyle but this is very very spotty indeed and for massive amounts of people it’s a really hard slog just getting by - which is why you see bent double 80 year old veterans working parking lots etc - when people think we need to look towards the US I wish so many who have never been or maybe a couple of Florida holidays understood the actual full picture

This is an example of what the Democrats are fighting against. 700% increases in the cost of health insurance.

Nah. The Dems have openly stated that the poor people will just have to go without. Even the far leftist Washington Post admits that the Dems have said poor people will just have to starve.

"The right answer is to reopen the government with a clean funding bill, ideally for a full year, to get food stamps flowing and federal workers back in the office, and then have a debate about ACA subsidies," the Post editorial said.

"Democrats openly acknowledge that they refuse to do this because it would mean giving up their leverage. If they persist, it could mean families start to go hungry."

If you believe that the Jeff Bezos-owned Washington Post is 'far leftist', you're beyond rational conversation.

Well they’re already stealing here in the UK because our Government has decreed that any theft less than £200 worth of goods will NOT be prosecuted. Nobody will come to the vendors aid!

Our Police are tooooo busy arresting people for tweets considered offensive and “non hate crimes”
OMG they’ll raid your home and drag you into custody without bail if you dare offend someone on X.
Fucking shambles is our inept, corrupt prime minister, Two-tier-never-here Kier.

Go into a shop and clear the shelves into a carrier bag and walk out. Nobody will stop you.

Its the Wild West over here and civil unrest will surely ensue.
Our young people can’t get homes because the. Island is overwhelmed with migrants who are prioritised for housing above our own people.
We have become the welfare system for the worlds poor and our Government is the driving force behind the chaos. .

They bring their mediaeval attitudes to our streets so women no longer feel safe to go out. Soon women will be told to “cover up” for fear of inflaming male desires. Then we’ll know all is lost!
The UK is unrecognisable from even 10 years ago.

You do know it was the previous conservative government, and specifically the home office under Theresa May, that changed the guidelines on enforcement of shop lifting right? You might not think the current government is doing a good job, and they re fucking up a lot of stuff, but you can’t blame them for that or everything stemming from the legacy of the last lot- the economic fallout from truss springs to mind ( hello higher mortgage rates) & the blond moron’s corruption spring easily to mind.

The Republicans are trying to avoid the swearing in of a democratic congresswoman who will have the deciding vote on releasing the Epstein files.

Timothy Mellon donated $130m 2 days ago to pay troops to keep shutdown going - his dad’s name is all over the Epstein flight logs (allegedly). There are lots of people doing their best to keep those files sealed.

Interesting…

@WhatIsTheCharge which country are you in?

If you are in the UK you can get a small amount of prescription medicines from a pharmacy. The brand names will be different and obviously you would have to pay.

What I can't understand is all the vitriol on X saying people shouldn't be able to buy certain things eg cookies or that they should be given a box of basic food stuff.

So it’s basically a stand off?

Yep.

GoldThumb · 31/10/2025 08:36

Republicabs are voting to go ahead with the budget they want, removing health care subsidies and other things. Of course they’re voting for that.
The democrats won’t agree to that budget. Of course their voting won’t.

if republicans really wanted to open back up then they’d go back to the budget and findnve healthcare subsidies. Why should the democrats back down when, in the long run, what they want is worth the short term pain as it’s better for the country overall.

So it’s basically a stand off?

Bobiverse · 31/10/2025 08:33

GoldThumb · 31/10/2025 08:22

This is what I thought, the republicans keep trying to open it, and the democrats keep voting to keep it closed.

Not sure how that’s trumps fault, unless I’m missing something?

Democrats have voted 13 times to shut down governent. Republicans need 60 votes to open it again but only have 54. They keep voting to re-open.

Democrats have openly admitted that people not getting food stamps is because they have shut down government. They have said they are going to keep doing it anyway.

That is, entirely and in a nutshell, exactly what has happened.

Of course they did.

And all the while, my local mom groups on social media are full of mothers panicking that they are going to run out of baby formula and not be able to replace it….because formula costs $40-$60 a can and they won’t be getting their SNAP in November 🫠

Omg why is formula so expensive over there?!

Trump is prepared to let his own people starve to blackmail the democrats into agreeing whatever he wants.

He is betting that they care more about hungry citizens than he does so they will back down first.

He is quite right because just about anybody cares more about suffering of others than trump.

Trump doesn't give a shit about anyone except himself so there is no humanity or compassion there to appeal to.

Poor people are his political pawns. He sold them a lie to get elected and is now using them again to force his will.

It will, of course, be spun by trump's shitehouse that this is all his opponents doing and presumably the maga crowd will swallow this, some of them instead of basic food.

But you can't fool all of the people all of the time so perhaps some will start to see the gap between trump "truth" and the reality of their daily lives.

All of this.

So ban abortion but then take away the means to raise the children.

I’m shocked at the US Christians supporting this. In the UK most food banks are ran out of churches. Don’t they have the same Christian spirt in the states

Christians happen to be some of the most charitable people so I don't know why you're blaming them

PermanentTemporary · 31/10/2025 06:23

@Junenights I think the uk equivalent would be the Commons voting down the Budget bill, which by convention I don’t think happens, and it going to the Lords and them blocking it as well. I know that it is a constitutional convention that the Lords as an unelected chamber don’t block the elected Government’s budget, though they could debate and ask for changes. The 1909 constitutional crisis was when the Lords refused to pass Lloyd George’s budget and LG got the King to threaten to create a whole lot of new Lords to force it through. This was so shocking that the convention emerged that the Lords don’t do that any more.

Junenights · 31/10/2025 06:18

Could someone explain what the uk equivalent would be of this US crisis? Is it like what would happen over here if everyone's universal credit payments stopped? because of labour not being able to agree on something related to budget?

PermanentTemporary · 31/10/2025 06:15

An awful lot of this seems to be happening just to prevent Trump from becoming a lame duck president with only a couple of years left and therefore not interesting. Hence all the posturing about a third term. I’m sure he would do it if he could but the main reason is just to keep the attention and money flowing his way so he can flog more memecoin in return for contracts and pardons.

Who is likely to be the next GOP candidate? Will it be Vance? I’ve already said I think Erica Kirk will be his VP pick.

Telemichus · 31/10/2025 06:15

WhatIsTheCharge · 30/10/2025 19:41

It’s such a fucking shit position to be in.

Everything in me is wanting to get involved and help where I can….but I’m also very much aware of our own situation and that my DH may not get paid either this pay cycle or the November 15th pay cycle.
We already chuck a few things in our local supermarket’s donation bin for the food bank every time we go shopping and will continue to do that.
We have a Trunk or Treat event at my kids’ school tonight. It’s a Title 1 school, so a huge proportion of students come from low income households or meet the Title 1 criteria for homelessness. There’s a volunteer meeting after the event so those of us who want to help and are able to help can get together and come up with some school initiatives to help take the edge off where we can for our students and their families who will be struggling as of Saturday.

Sorry I haven’t read the whole thread but I was wondering yesterday if school meals are affected? Presumably teachers aren’t getting paid? Or is that paid at a state level?
