What’s happening with food stamps in the US?

I’m seeing it all over social media. Has Trump stopped the equivalent of benefits?

Can someone explain please?

If what you say is true, why were the files not released under Biden Harris?

I don't know the answer to this, but I do know that one of the things Trump campaigned hard on, was the promise of full release of the Epstein files.

Now he says they don't exist? WTF?🤯

Was he lying to people about this during his campaign or is he lying now?

Poetnojo · 02/11/2025 02:34

If what you say is true, why were the files not released under Biden Harris?

Because plenty of Dems will be in those files as well 👀👀👀

Not everyone in there will have directly abused children…..but follow the money and there will be endless financial crimes on both sides of the political spectrum tying back to the abuse, either directly or indirectly.

There are some crazy beliefs around. Prosperity gospel preaches that wealth is God's will, the implication of which being that poor people must be bad. In the US these days Jesus would be denounced as a "commie" for his dangerous teachings like loving thy neighbour.

Really? It's seems the republicans are pro Christ and the Democrats are very anti Christ, no?
And from what I've seen, a lot of churches are running food drives.

Poetnojo · 02/11/2025 02:34

ThatDreamyLemonBiscuit · 30/10/2025 18:49

Yes but at least the democrats (and, to their credit, some republicans) want to see the files released.

I'm pretty confident Trump has been involved in some of the more heinous crimes, though. It's hard to explain away things like the FBI questioning Epstien on whether he had "socialized" with Trump and underage girls, Trump's extraordinary intervention with Ghislaine Maxwell (and moving her to a cushy prison) and general attempts at concealment, plus the court claims filed (with supportive witness statements) - then dropped, seemingly under some pressure - re. his alleged forcible rape of a minor.

Obviously there are others who are under real suspicion, but the strongest evidence of guilt seems to be in relation to Trump.

If what you say is true, why were the files not released under Biden Harris?

So ban abortion but then take away the means to raise the children.

I’m shocked at the US Christians supporting this. In the UK most food banks are ran out of churches. Don’t they have the same Christian spirt in the states

Calm down its all been sorted.

@coffeeccrisp what has been sorted?

the food stamp issue? It has not. Just because two federal judges said the food stamps should be paid does not mean people have food stamps. We have to wait and see in the next couple of weeks if that money appears.

Even if Trump issued an executive order to pay the money, there would be logistical barriers to getting the money distributed quickly off schedule, especially with so much of the federal workforce furloughed.

in the meantime, people still have nothing and food banks are overwhelmed.

Parkinson's doesn't affect me, why are you troubling us with it?

Do you see how that sounds?

mathanxiety · 01/11/2025 21:38

Ponderingwindow · 30/10/2025 18:40

The Epstein files are just a sideshow. The actual battle is over the affordable healthcare act. There are currently government subsidies to make it possible for people to afford to buy the now required health insurance on the open market. The republicans want to stop those subsidies. The democrats want them to continue. Without the subsidies, health insurance will become completely unaffordable and people will just have to pay the small annual fine for being uninsured instead.

They will then leave illnesses untreated until it becomes an emergency. At that point hospitals are required to treat them enough to stabilize them regardless of ability to pay. Hospitals will then pass the cost of treating those patients on to the patients who are paying. Thus those of us who do pay for our healthcare will have to pay even more.

since they can’t agree on a budget, the government shuts down and essentially everyone except the elected officials responsible for the mess don’t get paid. Essentials workers like air traffic controllers and military still have to show up to work without a paycheck. So they have the expenses of working like childcare and transportation, but no money coming in.

republicans control both the house and senate. They could push through the budget. They could authorize food stamp spending. They don’t want to take responsibility.

right now they are holding the poor hostage in a way. We can give them healthcare or food.

Either choice has a massive impact on the economy as a whole. Food stamps spending not entering the economy is going to hurt all of us and disrupt the supply chain in general.

Agree.

But remember that a lot of the childcare and public transportation sectors are also dependent on federal subsidies. Many phblic transport systems will grind to a halt or cut services when the money stops, and daycare facilities that accept or rely on federal subsidies under various programs will be forced to close, with families rendered unable to work, or more likely, mothers unable to work (a la Project 25).

mathanxiety · 01/11/2025 21:31

Bobiverse · 31/10/2025 08:33

Republicabs are voting to go ahead with the budget they want, removing health care subsidies and other things. Of course they’re voting for that.
The democrats won’t agree to that budget. Of course their voting won’t.

if republicans really wanted to open back up then they’d go back to the budget and findnve healthcare subsidies. Why should the democrats back down when, in the long run, what they want is worth the short term pain as it’s better for the country overall.

Agree.

And going into the midterms they need to make the message very clear that they are fighting for ordinary Americans.

mathanxiety · 01/11/2025 21:26

OverDram · 30/10/2025 18:27

Is this something that could happen every single year?

In theory, yes, but in practice it only happens when there is a razor thin Republican majority or a particularly obdurate wing of a party holding everyone else to ransom.

In this case, part of the reason to shut down is to prevent a newly elected Democratic Congress member from Arizona from being sworn in and seated. This member would vote on the release of the Epstein files and would also vote against the many elements of the budget that are aimed at decimating the welfare of the majority of Americans who live paycheck to paycheck.

Because unless you want children starving out on the streets (through no fault of their own, they didn't ask to be born) then you give their parents money and hope they get fed. If you're saying you'd rather kids go hungry so their idiotic parents can't brag about whatever money they receive on social media then there's no hope for you.
And be careful out there. I saw something so ridiculous I didn't believe it, and after reverse searching the image used in the article concluded it was fake and just rage bait. The same picture came up on another four articles along the same lines, looked like it was taken in the 2000s, and there were no other results. People do make shit up.

Calm down its all been sorted.

Im all for the snap if used in the right way the same as i feel with UK benefits.
But for what ive seen women are going crazy over it.
Saying its the tax payers responsibility to feed their kid.
One saying she has 7 kids with 7 dads another with 5 kids why did they have more kids when they knew they was struggling in the first place.
Openly saying they scam the system.

I didnt help make any kids they choose to lay down so why should tax payers have to pay for them and fund them.

Nobody got paid - not even active duty military. Then that money got magicked up, so active duty got paid, but civilian contractors didn’t.
The medical centre in our USAF base is in shambles. The only services available at the moment are “essential services” - so emergency room & labour and delivery basically. The pharmacy is rationing medications because there’s no budget for them to be able to restock. I’m on my last pack of mine and can’t order my repeat prescription because they haven’t got it. The way health insurance works for military folk here, is you are either on Tricare Prime or Tricare Select. Prime is free for active duty servicemen and their dependants, but you have to be seen on base. Select has an out-of-pocket fee but you get to choose where you get care as long as the doctor you choose is in Network, but obviously most of those doctors now don’t want to see Tricare patients because when they go to make the insurance claim to Tricare to get paid, theirs no budget allocated to pay for it…..so we are fucked unless we can pay out-of-pocket to see a random doctor off base (which most of us can’t especially right now!)

I'm sorry, it must be so stressful.

Did you get paid, @WhatIsTheCharge? I thought for sure we wouldn't this month, but we got it yesterday. Not the full amount but almost.

Just to sweeten the deal, DH has the duty phone this week and it rang at 4:30am 🫠 So I’ve woken up again and he’s still not here…..so I don’t know yet about pay

This.

Theres been a fair few Americans recently who I’ve told about our impending move back, and they just regurgitate the usual GB News bollocks 🫠😂
And I’m just there like: “Yeah…..universal healthcare, paid maternity leave, subsidised childcare, minimum of 25 paid days of work a year and 10 national holidays off work is soooooo oppressive” 🫠🫠😂😂😂

Ha - so very true - don’t get me wrong I really enjoy the trips We’ve had to California and New York and my h has toured there managing bands, but it’s a place to live with pots of money for a good lifestyle or with a company paying your health and housing etc - for average earners paying their own way - it can be a very hard slog and better weather doesn’t compensate for the negatives ‘in my opinion’ - I find most people commenting on the US are in a fortunate position.that’s not to say I don’t think there are better places lifestylexwise in the EU than the uk ,,having lived for 20 months in Copenhagen - but again it comes down to other factors , work, getting in. ( post brexit) ability to make a network for yourself - it’s all a balancing act

Junenights · 31/10/2025 16:29

PermanentTemporary · 31/10/2025 06:23

@Junenights I think the uk equivalent would be the Commons voting down the Budget bill, which by convention I don’t think happens, and it going to the Lords and them blocking it as well. I know that it is a constitutional convention that the Lords as an unelected chamber don’t block the elected Government’s budget, though they could debate and ask for changes. The 1909 constitutional crisis was when the Lords refused to pass Lloyd George’s budget and LG got the King to threaten to create a whole lot of new Lords to force it through. This was so shocking that the convention emerged that the Lords don’t do that any more.

Thanks so much for breaking it down.

Btw, love the username!

@askmenow Soon women will be told to “cover up” for fear of inflaming male desires. Then we’ll know all is lost!

'She was asking for it, going out dressed like that' is old news in this country.
I'm old. I remember many court cases where women were raped and then further abused, shamed and blamed by the police, the courts and society because of their clothing. Misogyny is not a new concept.

Yeah but the new brand dickhead’s favourite pastime is to use examples of misogynistic behaviour and abuse against women as another stick to beat brown people with 🫠👍🏻

(whilst seemingly ignoring the facts that tell us 83% of defendants in sex crime cases are white males)

Is there a single far right trope which you have forgotten? 🤣🤣🤣🤣

I live in a deprived area of the UK, and while the UK is far from perfect it is still a relatively amazing place to live, with a social safety net and medical care free at point of use (which admittedly does not get all needs met in a timely fashion due to rationing caused by funding issues). We have a stable society, rule of law and freedom of expression. A lot of people seem to forget that, and are mainly interested in sowing hatred and division rather than tackling the problems cooperatively in a constructive mature way.

I have lived and worked in countries where a lot of these moaners would not survive two minutes without the support that a functioning non-corrupt democratic state provides. We should count our blessings rather than catastrophise and cheer when a previously stable democratic country such as the US has a major stability wobble which is being played out on the backs of the poor and government employees who (in the main) work for the common good.

@WhatIsTheCharge which country are you in?

If you are in the UK you can get a small amount of prescription medicines from a pharmacy. The brand names will be different and obviously you would have to pay.

What I can't understand is all the vitriol on X saying people shouldn't be able to buy certain things eg cookies or that they should be given a box of basic food stuff.

I’m still in the US at the moment.

Ive got 24 days worth of my meds left. If this situation isn’t unfucked by the time I reach 21 days, I’ll have to pay for a telehealth appointment out of pockets with another provider and get more prescribed that way

Gair · 31/10/2025 14:40

askmenow · 31/10/2025 03:16

Well they’re already stealing here in the UK because our Government has decreed that any theft less than £200 worth of goods will NOT be prosecuted. Nobody will come to the vendors aid!

Our Police are tooooo busy arresting people for tweets considered offensive and “non hate crimes”
OMG they’ll raid your home and drag you into custody without bail if you dare offend someone on X.
Fucking shambles is our inept, corrupt prime minister, Two-tier-never-here Kier.

Go into a shop and clear the shelves into a carrier bag and walk out. Nobody will stop you.

Its the Wild West over here and civil unrest will surely ensue.
Our young people can’t get homes because the. Island is overwhelmed with migrants who are prioritised for housing above our own people.
We have become the welfare system for the worlds poor and our Government is the driving force behind the chaos. .

They bring their mediaeval attitudes to our streets so women no longer feel safe to go out. Soon women will be told to “cover up” for fear of inflaming male desires. Then we’ll know all is lost!
The UK is unrecognisable from even 10 years ago.

@WhatIsTheChargewhat do you think will happen? Who will fold

Literally couldn’t say at this point.

The information we are getting changes from one day to the next. somethings telling me that Democrats are more likely to fold than Republicans….but I’m not sure if they’ll be willing to concede on the healthcare subsidies.

All we can do is ride it out unfortunately.
