To think it's time for a woman to be Prime Minister

It doesn't look like Starmer is going to be PM for much longer but all the favourites to replace him are men.

Every female PM we've had has been Conservative - no woman has ever led the Labour Party before.

Wouldn't it be an improvement to have a left wing woman running the country, like we've seen elsewhere? There are many good female MPs in Labour like Raynor, Mahmood, Huq, Phillips, Siddiq, Leadbeater, Thornberry, Dodds, Kendall, Haigh, Butler and Reeves (Ellie, not Rachel).

Why aren't any of them contenders and wouldn't we be doing better if one of them was in charge?

You can't listen to the electorate anymore, there is no 'we', no consensus, no general will, we are ungovernable

A bit of an overstatement and no different to the past. You see the detail of the debates now because you’re living in them. History becomes a broad sweep certain events and debates. The general squabbling and factionalism get lost over time but they were there.

itsgettingweird · 30/10/2025 07:25

I wanted Rayner or Cooper to succeed Starmer. Guess I’ll have to hope it’s Cooper now!

wont go back to Tory now they’ve lived away from their one nation centre party politics and don’t know who'll
vote for at next GE (not reform!) but I’d like to see a woman in charge of Labour if they are as or more competent than the men up for selection.

WeirdyBeardyMarrowBabyLady · 30/10/2025 07:22

I’m a Labour supporter (tho am very disappointed in the current government).

I also agree that the leader of a party needs to be based on merit and ability.

Having said that it’s a bit embarrassing for the major party of the left, which in theory ought to be progressive, never to have had a female leader and, by extension, a female PM.

That the Conservatives have had three by comparison (I appreciate Truss was more of a brief moment of madness for them) is a real weak spot for Labour.

I just want someone who knows what they’re doing and actually listens to the electorate.

What are the electorate saying exactly? That the NHS is not fit for purpose but don't you dare raise income tax to improve it?

Deport illegal immigrants. Oh no, be kind to the poor things!

Protect women's rights. If a man says he's a woman - he is!

We have no idea what we want, just that we don't want what we've got.

It would be an improvement if a more right wing female was pm, left wing? No thanks

I can’t get past ‘What was wrong with them?’ Add Thatcher to the list…..Oh dear.

It was a joke about female PMs to highlight the peculiarity of the post

Cinnamon77 · 30/10/2025 06:51

Thatcher was a Conservative MP, not Labour

As were Truss and May. All three were disastrous. Your sex does not determine your capability. I would support any capable Labour candidate.

PollyBell · 30/10/2025 07:03

So throw any random woman in there she will automatically be better, does not make a good pm

Starmer will remain PM.

The country is broke after Tory rule and no-one from any party knows how to fix Britain. Sadly.

RhubarbCrumbs · 30/10/2025 06:58

To be honest I’m not bothered if we have a man or a woman, I just want someone who knows what they’re doing and actually listens to the electorate.

We’re going to end up with Farage at this point, how embarrassing.

FlyingApple · 30/10/2025 06:58

It will make no difference and it's naive to think it will.

Truss and May were right wing.

Why can't we have a left wing woman as PM?

Because the Labour Party is pretty sexist, ironically for all their inclusivity.

That’s a good question for the Labour Party. Why do they not have female leaders unlike other parties?
Also some of those women you’ve quoted I would trust to run a bath, never mind the country.

She seemed impressive when she spoke and we've never had an ethnic minority woman as PM before

Judge people by the content of their character and not the colour of their skin.

Siddiq is one heck of a liability.

I don’t disagree with most of your thinking… but interested in why you have Tulip Siddiq on the list? She was a fairly average junior minister before being found to be seriously corrupt.

Emily Thornberry, really!

Letsbe · 30/10/2025 06:42

I think you mean Harriet Harman

Margaret Beckett too. Labour has an interesting history of letting women play at being leader then choosing a man to do it for real.

Doesn’t matter who it is. They are all full of shit.

BlueJuniper94 · 30/10/2025 06:42

Dawn Butler as PM 🤭
