Could there be stricter rules on dog ownership?

Thinking of getting a dog and came across this article? Could there be stricter rules and regulations on dog ownership?
Many, like the RVC, believe there should be. With so many pet dogs in society – a significant proportion of which have poor social and training skills – many feel there needs to be more interventions to emphasise the importance of responsible dog ownership. We are already seeing more restrictions on dogs in public spaces in the UK. Councils are frequently adopting Public Space Protection Orders, to ban dogs from areas such as public parks, beaches and even car parks.
This is largely as a result of too many people allowing their dogs to foul public spaces and creating tension by walking too many dogs at once. Indeed, in many towns and cities – especially in tourist areas, the numbers of people visiting with a dog has become vastly more noticeable.

I think there’s irresponsible dog owners certainly and I wouldn’t be averse to tighter controls.

However - I also think there’s irreparable parents too and think reproducing should also be more tightly regulated.

I was in a cafe with my working dog on Saturday. He was lying sleeping at my feet after a walk on the beach and I was reading a book - all of a sudden a (circa) three year old girl is sitting on him (I’m not joking) shouting ‘woof woof’ and aggressively patting his head. No parent to be seen- however it turns out they were just two tables over and weren’t keeping an eye out. How much more in control could the dog haters want a dog?

luckily he’s a dosy 7 month old lab with not a braincell in his head to even contemplate being aggressive, but fucking hell it could have been nasty and it would have been me and the dog that got the blame.

Why should we avoid places where he can operate perfectly fine for the sake of feral children?

Am I alone in never having been bothered or inconvenienced by a dog? Dogs wearing jumpers does not affect my quality of life, nor do the arseholes of dogs have much of an impact.

People who hang little bags of dog shit on trees always raise my blood pressure a little.

I like seeing dogs off leads, and they generally seem reasonably well behaved.

I'm more of a cat person myself, but am always glad to see a dog out and about.

I see very good reasons why people might wish to have a dog. Loneliness etc. But I feel it's got to the point that the impact on public spaces and the associated costs are so detrimental that there should be extremely strict conditions in place to deter dog ownership in general. I think dogs have ruined most nature spaces. You should have to own large amounts of private land to have one, huges taxes and so on.

Police dogs, dogs for the blind, sheep dogs, other working dogs obviously excluded!

Sorry, but I can not relate to what you are on about. If you hate dogs, then even if you see one in the course of a day, that will be "too many".

I have a dog, and I love dogs. I am not a fan of yappy dogs that are small and their behaviour is excused due to their size. I don't like seeing dog poo that has been left on the grass or the pavement. I don't like off lead dogs bounding up to my on lead one and the owner saying "it is ok, they are friendly", when the very act of running up to my dog has scared her.

It is people who ruin nature spaces, not dogs.

MrsPernicious · 28/10/2025 19:58

@CoffeeLipstickKeys

I'm sorry, what is your problem with dogs being insured and trained?
Do you really think your issues will be solved by keeping dogs in unsatisfactory conditions?
I actually thought my post was rather bland but not pro animal abuse, do you wish to differ?

Brilliant idea!!

I'm against Digital ID, but support it to the hilt for dogs!

Where are the resources for people to be picking up stray poos to take for DNA testing?

Tutorpuzzle · 28/10/2025 19:50

For your information, @CoffeeLipstickKeys , my dogs graduate summa cum laude, honours is far too basic for them.

Yup. Not had one for a bit, have we?

When I left Gibraltar they started enforcing dog DNA testing for registration, ownership and to fine owners whos shit was found and not bagged up. £400 per fine!!!

Brilliant idea!!

Well, here is my furbaby and my mum's gorgeous boy. Both greyhounds and both needing coats when it is cold.
My dog is nearly 15 and a half (which is well over what greyhounds live to), and the other is 7.

Could there be stricter rules on dog ownership?

Ignoring the rabid dog haters and back to OPs point.
Yes there should be stricter rules:
Insurance should be compulsory,
Signing up to some sort of training, even if it is only a six session puppy class. would be good.
Dog owners should always be armed with at least two poo bags, as is the law in other countries, great idea.

If you have a skinny breed or old, sick, infirm dog etc; you should provide then with appropriate protection from the weather.
Being a pet dog is ultimately a form of slavery, we the owners should be held responsible for keeping them in satisfactory conditions.

House! You said rabid dog haters
Of course, anyone not effusing about doggies must be a hater. And a rabid one at that

Are you secretly a fur baby owner @CoffeeLipstickKeys , just off for a pawsecco with your lovely puppy wuppy? Your posts are becoming a little too intense to be completely believable.

I do love the idea of dna testing dog shit though, I’m all for locking up the buggers who don’t pick up, or worse, hang the stuff on trees.

And you’re somewhat defensive? Oh no! has someone been mean to your fur baby? Oh no? Is your dog not going to graduate dog school with honours cum laude?

What impact does a dog wearing a jumper have? Apart from keeping it warm?

You're very odd

Sends their blood pressure sky high. You know what helps with that? Having a dog

Bluevelvetsofa · 28/10/2025 19:40

As I understand it, many of the pet organisations are very aware that the changes in dog ownership brought about by Covid are the reason for the situation we have now. There were exponentially more puppies bought at that time, because walking was what you could do and those puppies are now adult dogs and some people are getting fed up with them, so they’re left alone, not trained and sometimes ill treated.

If dogs are trained, cared for, socialised, that’s fine. So many aren’t though. Neighbours of ours have four large strong dogs. The dogs take them for a walk, rather than the other way round. They’re bouncy, jump up all the time and terrify the life out of me. When a dog is big enough to reach your shoulders as it jumps, it’s scary.

Someones desire to have twice as many dogs in their house as people, means that my enjoyment of my home, garden and environment is compromised.
